simba43 replied to palehose23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 25, 2009 -> 01:19 AM) Started out 35-5, including the Sox having a great series against them. They were amazing. The sox had a great series against them ? in what way ? during the Tigers 35-5 start they swept the sox both 3 game series so we went 0-6 to them in that first 40 games and we lost to them 3-2 4-0 no hitter 7-3 all in chi 3-2 4-1 9-1 in det so we were outscored 30 to 9 how did we have a great series against them ? seems we got our butts kicked -

QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 25, 2009 -> 12:20 AM) Ah, the '84 Tigers. Baseball's version of the '85 Bears. Best team ever to only win one title. I watched Jack Morris no-hit the Sox on opening day that year and knew that team was destined for greatness. Morris, Hernandez, Trammel, Whitaker, Parrish, Lemon, Gibson, Evans, etc (and special mention to Rusty Kuntz just because he has the best name ever in baseball). Just a dominant team that still stands in the memories of baseball fans to this day. Morris no hit the sox it was his 2nd start of the year and i believe game 4 or 5 of that season not opening day -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 06:33 AM) Exactly, I wouldn't pay my 4th or 5th starters $11.5 million combined, let alone for one of them. well your not the Yankees 11mil for them is 3mil for the sox -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 06:12 AM) Meh, he'll be beneficial to them getting the best record by August, then the Yankees can either just sit him down in Sept and bullpen him in October, or pitch him till the end of the season as there is less pressure for them to win if they clinch the division that early. See it makes sense. Thats true to and if he doesn't do well the yankees will just trade for another pitcher . Vasques is the yankees Garcia or Dolisi no big deal -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 12:49 AM) List of Sox-affiliated players in the various winter leagues, I bolded some of them that I thought were worth highlighting... LF Pierre 2b Beckham we don't really have another player that can hit 2nd ? AJ UGH Rameris no patience. Teahen ? RF CQ Rather put Beckham 3rd and Q 4TH BUT . I seen some with AJ but i can't see it . 1B Konerko i don't like it but who else ? Again AJ Teahen maybe jones if he is DHING C AJ I REALLY don't like it but Ozzie won't bat 4 righties in a row so ? maybe Teahen CF Rios or maybe Rameris 3B Teahen DH Jones funny our DH BATTING 8TH or 9th could be a sign of strength . but in our case more of a sign of weakness . we could bat alexi here SS Ramires no matter who we DH most likely he will bat 8th or 9th so except for our leadoff spot our lineup just seems out of place were missing that one impact bat that real number 3 or 4 hitter and we don't have any real left handed power and when we play the Red sox an especially the Yankees we really need that so i really hope our GM WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT .
-
anyway i just hope we get a good left handed power bat .because i look at this line up and im just depressed by what i see in terms of a actual lineup. i think i have made 25 different lineups and none look that great .

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 09:39 PM) I dont see where he is indicating the Sox should trade Quentin for Hamilton. The question is, why would the Rangers trade a guy who has already shown the talent behind the potential, and is cheap, and is under team control for a while? It makes no sense, Hamilton would only be available for a good haul, and I dont think the Sox would want to give up that haul. the reason i feel they might trade him is because he had a down year also he was hurt and he is a risk . also if you look the Rangers have a lot of OFS even in there system there deep especially left handed hitters . but i admit it would cost us something but he would still be cheaper then UPTON and much more cheaper then AGON . i admit i don't know his true value and if say Hudson and another prospect could do it or is Hudson to much to trade but i do think we can get him for a package of prospects .

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 01:29 PM) Bottom line is, we need a serious hitter. A star player. We clearly can't afford one, so it'll have to come via trade. I still think there's a chance Jenks goes. I think they got Putz so he could set up Thornton. Freddy Dolsi could fill the missing short relief spot. Ideally, they get someone to overpay for Linebrink instead, but that's just wishful thinking. yes we do need a real hitter . its sad that we can't find a way to spend 6 to 8 mil on a good player . well we could try to trade for Josh Hamilton he is cheap and i believe under team control for a couple more years . yeah he is a risk but he is a real talented player .

QUOTE (gatnom @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 12:27 PM) I seem to remember him hitting a home run ridiculously deep into the stands at the cell, like a few rows short of the concourse type deep. I saw him the other day serving hot dogs at the YMCA

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) Ozzie just wants a team of guys that were just like him when he played. Good defense, decent speed, mediocre bat with no power. There... I said it. well were getting there .

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) I read an interesting quote from Contreras who I read was throwing 95 when he went to Colorado. He said wherever he went, he wanted to take the Colo. pitching coach with him. I'm not blaming Coop for Contreras, but this notiion that he fixes everyone is silly. agreed

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 12:36 AM) Also throw in that Buehrle negotiated his deal to essentially make him untradeable, since if he's traded he get's $19 million. NO WAY they will trade buehrle . maybe and i say very slim maybe next year they would trade him and it would be more because buehrle will retire or said he would retire after his contract is up but would like to pitch for ST Louis so with that maybe they trade him but next off season . And even then it would be more of Mark requesting a trade to possibly play his last year with his hometown favorite team . I also believe if Mark does not retire he will sign with the Cardinals anyway .

QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 11:58 AM) While I agree another hitter would make me more comfortable to start the season, I think some people are going overboard on the "Sox are old" thing. Five of the 8 starting position players are under 30. Three of the 5 starting pitchers are under 30. Nobody, except for Vizquel, is older than 34. The Sox are not old. Who cares if the bench is old? They're on short contracts and are easily replaceable. i don't think the sox are old . it was more to who they are picking up this year .
-
But i think he would be a good pick up and probably cheaper then what matsui got . i for one did not want matsui i mean hitting in that lineup no pressure even in the series i think the angels will regret that signing . but i think Hank would be good for us . we are picking up other Rangers vizqeul jones so why not . but for the sox he is on the wrong side of 30 so i think Ozzie KW might not like him . so far i really don't like our lineup i can't explain it its like we have nobody that fits in the right order . i mean after pierre is beckham really best place to hit is 2nd and if not him who ? and if CQ hits 3rd who will clean up ? i have seen AJ Konerko but neither is really a clean up hitter and if we did put konerko 4th who bats 5th again AJ TEAHEN ? and most lineups i see here have our DH batting last DH AT 9 OMG . WE NEED ANOTHER BAT KW .

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 01:53 AM) Upton will be 25 next year, he's under control for 3 seasons, and he's one of the most talented players in baseball in terms of the things he is able to do physically. This is a CF whose MLB career highs in the following categories are: AVG .300, OBP .386, SLG .508, HR 24, 2B 37, BB 97, SB 44. At the age of 25 he should be expected to put up some of those numbers again, if not improve upon them, and if he puts it all together in a healthy season? Wow. His ceiling is enormous; far, far higher than any player we have on the farm. Tampa Bay has no need to move him, they're just capable of considering it because of the sheer amount of talent they have in the minor leagues. Jenks is essentially a 1-year commitment to an upper-level closer coming off a down year at a price that is very near market value. He does have value, but not a ton of it. Flowers is a very nice catching prospect, but his ceiling isn't Mike Piazza or anything, in fact the contact and defense concerns are still pretty serious with him. Offering 1-2 more lesser prospects isn't going to do it either. Maybe if we offered Jenks + 3 top prospects including Hudson we could get something done, but we'd really have to blow TB away with an offer of several players that they believe in if we want to get Upton. The other thing is, TB has such a deep system with so many young guys either already producing big at the MLB level or right on the cusp of doing it that we're not going to have the "readiness vs. ceiling" thing in our favor like may be the case with the Padres and Gonzalez. With the Padres, they need to put talented prospects out there right now and build a new core immediately if they want to contend 2 years from now. That's not the case with TB, so TB could easily go after someone else and look for 4-5 players who have some pretty sick ceilings but are a little ways away. BJ isn't going to come cheap at all, and IMO a Jenks + Flowers + 1-2 other players not named Hudson or Viciedo is a pretty cheap offer. Agreed why people are thinking we can get upton for jenks and flowers must think the rays are just stupid . honestly i don't think the rays will trade him but if they do it won't be for jenks start thinking hudson flowers maybe another top prospect to start with it might cost us almost as much as to get upton as would AGON .
-
lyon because could be a closer maybe you can get him as a setup man price and he is pretty good and not injury prone . so that means the sox won't even offer him a contract .

QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) Juan Pierre owed 18.5M over the next two years, Linebrink 10.5M so we would have to take on 8M over the next two years which doesn't seem unreasonable since it would fill the hole in the OF and at leadoff. Probably have to throw in a prospect or two, I was thinking Torres or another AAAA starter since they seem to want pitching. http://twitter.com/stevehenson333/status/6416431930 wasn't this already talked about before ? you guys must be bored in your life's to bring up same old trades senerios that make no sense anyway .

a lot of you get way to excited even to the point of panic over ever thing you read or hear .
