  1. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) I would absolutely be in on Quintana if I were the Rockies They really could use players like Quintana, Robertson and Jones to help solidify their rotation and bullpen Right, but again, people don't make decisions based on need in Colorado. It's all random. They worship chaos and entropy. One of my friends and I were imagining what board meetings are actually like there. His hypothesis is that they have a tank of manatees in the center of the conference room, and that they throw colored balls in and make decisions based on which balls the manatees push toward the front of the tank. "Ohh that's blue, that means Ian Desmond! Ohh it looks like.. wait... oh FIRST BASE! Wow, that was unexpected. Welp, let's see what we're going to offer... Ohh Ten, NO, SEVENTY MILLION! Haha fun! Call his agent"
  2. QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 12:39 PM) I feel the same way. I'd still rank them: 1. Pirates (Meadows/Glasnow) 2. Rockies (Dahl/Rodgers) 3. Yankees (Torres/Frazier) ... then the rest with a significant drop off. The Rockies' interest is purely theoretical, so unless the Dodgers get involved, I am hoping it's Meadows or Frazier patrolling the OF for the White Sox next year. The Rockies front office is run by a Random Number Generator, so it doesn't do any good to speculate based on need. On the other hand, you can never count them out.
  3. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 22, 2016 -> 10:19 AM) While I'd obviously prefer Meadows, I would be satisfied with the package above. Same, I;d take that deal. But I'd rather have Meadows and three guys I've never heard of, honestly.
  4. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:30 PM) I think the Cardinals will eventually offer Bader for Frazier when the time comes, though that moment won't come until EE signs. Melky is a more of a deadline player for a team making the playoff push that is light on LHH or has suffered some OF injuries. He's a guy where his impending free agency might actually help his value as teams who find a spot opened for him by injury will likely have an incumbent LF to open 2018 that they don't want to unseat. I would not be surprised if he's dealt, hit FA and then comes back to the Sox on a 2 year deal. He seems to get on pretty well here. I don't see that happening unless they dump Peralta's contract first.
  5. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 11:57 AM) I bet the Pirates would give up one of Meadows/Bell but don't want to give up both. "Settling" on the 2nd and 3rd pieces will be the hold up here I'm betting. I would not let Bell keep me from completing a deal with Meadows, personally.
  6. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:37 AM) What does this phrase mean? Many scouts and pundits feel that his stock has risen a lot recently, to the degree that public perception may lag behind his current value
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:29 AM) Only for Chuck Garfien, I hope they get Kevin Newman. He was born the day Robin Ventura charged Nolan Ryan. 8/4/93 The only explanation I can think of is that Kevin Newman is a familiar that spawned from Robin's shame and despair. It seems clear that his destiny is to join the Sox and single-handedly serve the Rangers a devastating playoff defeat as an increasingly infirm Ryan watches from a luxury suite.
  8. QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:27 AM) Meadows is a stud, has been for awhile He's been a top 50-100 guy for a while, but it sounds like a lot of people think he's a top 10 guy now.
  9. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 21, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) Ah, OK, I follow ya now. Still waiting for my coffee to wake my brain up. I wonder if Meadows is a potential sticking point. From what I've read the Pirates are counting on Meadows to be McCutchen's replacement if they find a suitor for Cutch. Also sounds as though the Pirates do not want to part with Bell so if that's the case then Glasnow has to be the headliner or the Pirates are SOL. Glasnow is the type of pitcher that would make the Sox FO drool over. I would imagine that acquiring Quintana and moving McCutchen are mutually exclusive. If the former occurs, it's because they've moved away from the latter. From the sense I'm getting from the blog/chat/tweet universe, it sounds like the industry is souring a bit on Glasnow. Seems like it now looks that he may not be able to develop enough command to stock as a starter.
  10. If we end up with Meadows, we likely did well. From what I've been reading lately, dude has a lot of helium.
  11. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 19, 2016 -> 09:23 PM) All that signing this guy will do is crowd out the necessary and important auditions of younger players. Some of these young players will be part of the next good Sox team and some won't. It's time to find out about the Coats, et al. It's true that, of all the gaping holes to fill with a potential trade-chip veteran during a rebuild, a DH is the one that makes the least sense.
  12. Fine, but you're never allowed to complain about any dumpster/reclamation signing ever again.
  13. QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) Why is this weird to me? Most likely it means they see a mechanical tweak they think might make him effective.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 17, 2016 -> 11:48 AM) That's basically what Phils did last year. It's good news because it means some unexpected players playing well. Right, hopefully an Odubel Herrera emerges. But yeah, Moncada will not be on the team in April, even if he's ready.
  15. QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 05:30 PM) Just saw Matt Adams is available. Without knowing their values too much, what about more MLB ready hitting talent like Adams & Grichuk? Pair those two with Reyes for Q? Maybe we throw in Melky? Am I way off base? Adams isn't really an MLB player at this point. And STL just paid a bunch of money to plug their OF hole, wouldn't make sense to open it right back up just to turn Reyes into Quintana.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 10:36 AM) I think the "safest" route to juicing the system would be for Otani to sign a very early extension. Agreed. It would be difficult for the MLB to cry collusion if he was able to sign an extension after playing for one full season. If that's legal, it becomes very plausible for Otani to "bet on himself" by taking his $9m to come over and prove himself, having made a handshake agreement to discuss a 6-figure extension in that first offseason. Given his age, he would stand to make a ton of money even if he's merely above-average, even if it's still less than he'd have made at the peak of his hype. Viewed through that lense, the rules are then really only a significant piece of negotiating leverage for the signing team. Also, I wonder what the restrictions are on that ~$9m rookie bonus contract. For example, could they still work in a "you cannot send me to arbitration" clause or something similar that would reduce the team's level of control?
  17. Nah, I always hope they do better than expected... ...until like September. Then, if the season is way lost, I can root for losses.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) Type of move a rebuilding club should do. See if we can turn him into something we can leverage for more assets.
  19. I was in Japan for my honeymoon in September. I saw three baseball games live, but unfortunately no PL games. I caught a Fighters game on TV in a hotel, though. Otani wasn't pitching, but he ripped a double into the gap. He is a really big kid, and has a lefty uppercut swing, unlike a lot of Ichiro-esque contact hitters in that league. It really looks like it's a swing that will translate to the MLB, in my non-professional opinion. Also, Brandon Laird hit 40+ bombs in the NPB each of the last two seasons for the Fighters, lmao.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2016 -> 10:57 AM) 1-1 draft slot is now $7.4 million. Taking on $20-30 million should net multiple top prospects. I just don't think it is feasible. I think your general premise is correct, but be careful with the "Dave Roberts Prospect Valuation Model." First round picks are worth substantially more than their slot values.
  21. Patience is one component, but the truly damning part of the data presented is the fact that he simply hasn't hit the ball as hard as average major leaguers.
  22. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) Question for the board. What if Houston caved in and said they would trade Bregman but the trade would be Bregman for Q straight up. Would ya do it? I would not, but I'm the low guy on Bregman. Regardless, the system still needs depth. I'd really be trying for 3-4 guys for Quintana, even if the last two are lottery tickets.
  23. I don't think Hahn leaves his room. I saw a lot of Cashman running around with his gf at Winter Meetings this week, but no Hahn sightings whatsoever.
  24. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 3, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) Does this take LA out of the Sale talks? Probably. I would think. But assuming we do end up moving Sale, it could be a blessing in disguise. LA's best prospects are pitchers, and Friedman is there -- the stingiest of the stingy when it comes to prospects, and who seems to never "lose" a trade of this type.
