  1. Thinking about national reporting. Split up NBC/MSBNC into 2 options.
  2. i wonder if the "Bill Burton" university rep, is the same Bill Burton who served as Obama's PR Man during the election?
  3. After living in Chicago/burbs for 30 years, I've found a new love for Manny's Restaurant.
  4. oh yeah... I also hate Twitter and its effect on Modern America.
  5. what the internet has done, is make everyone a commentator. Everyone has an opinion and feels the need to share it. (kinda like Sports talk radio) Quite frankly, I don't give a rats as* what Bill in Baltimore thinks about the economy. The other thing it has done is rapidly increase the myths/lies associated with things/people. I remember in 1997, my future mother in law convinced, that if she forwarded this "email" from Walt Disney Co to 15 of her favorite friends, she'd get a free admission to Disney World. I knew then, that we are in trouble.
  6. What would you say, the FMV of the Dow should be?
  7. interesting......... Data points provided independently to the Huffington Post show that union voters in Massachusetts were 15 percentage points more likely to vote for Attorney General Martha Coakley if they simply had been asked. The problem was, unions weren't really operating on the ground until the final days. Coakley ultimately lost the labor vote to Scott Brown by a margin of 49 percent to 46 percent, according to the AFL-CIO's data. More surprising, however, was the explanation as to why union members voted the way they did. According to the data: "Coakley won union voters who had heard from their union by 10 points, while losing those who said they had not heard from their union by 5 points." Had unions been able to reach more people, and moved the vote breakdown to 60 percent for Coakley, 40 percent for Brown, "Coakley would have won the race by 2 points," the study concludes. (Union households usually vote 65-35 in favor of the endorsed candidate, the survey also notes.)
  8. 538 did an analysis on his positions and ranked him in the Senate. He is the most liberal Republican out there, just slightly more liberal than Olympia Snowe. (and he should be, due to the state he represents) He's just right of Ben Nelson (D) of NE. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=thG...GXyWA&gid=1 http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/01/sco...beral-than.html
  9. from my little world, i can tell you that business capital spending, is up... way up versus Jan 2009. Normally this means job growth is around the corner.
  10. I miss the days of Spud Webb, Dominique, MJ....
  11. Holy Hell on 3 women house reps in US History. - Niki Tsongas (current Paul Tsongas widow) - Margaret Heckler (1967-1983) - Edith Rogers (1925-1960) For a women rep in 1925, that's pretty progressive.
  12. Zero Speakers of the Massachusetts House of Representatives
  13. Probably some house people. Zero Boston Mayors
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 10:18 PM) Honestly, I think it is the fact that it is Tebow and his family that are the ones presenting a message. Similar to what Soxy posted earlier. Who the f*** are Tim Tebow and his mother to try and influence me on such a personal, intimate decision such as that? Basically, they are trying to capitalize on Tebow's accomplishments as an amatuer football player to influence people on their choice on something this personal. That will turn a lot of people off. The reason this is different than, and more offensive to some than, say a Doritos or Budweiser commercial, is because they are trying to influence our decision on something as important as abortion with a celebrity spokesman or athlete, just like they do for something as trivial as what kind of snacks we enjoy at lunch or what kind of beer we have after a tough day at work. I think it has a lot more to do with the Tebow's and this organization using a forum usually reserved for far-less important issues and butting their way into our party time. Great Points.
  15. my comment was tongue in cheek... of course I want people to have a choice. Maybe it would be worthwhile, for someone else to put out an ad that says, I was raped. I got pregnant. I had an abortion. It was the right thing for me as a point-counterpoint.
  16. I like it. Shaq wants stars to dunk By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer Jan 19, 11:27 pm EST CLEVELAND (AP)—Shaquille O’Neal(notes) has a plan to save the NBA’s All-Star dunk contest: Bring back the superstars and do it for devastated Haiti. Following Tuesday night’s win over Toronto, O’Neal was asked if he would like to see teammate LeBron James(notes) participate in this year’s event. That’s when he offered his idea. He would like to see former dunk champion Vince Carter(notes), Kobe Bryant(notes) and others take part along with James. “As his manager, I will only allow ‘Bron to do the dunk contest if Vince Carter comes back out,” O’Neal said. “If Kobe comes back out and if another big name comes back out. If we could get a big prize and have half of the money go to the people of Haiti and the other half to the winner. “The guys that are in it, no disrespect to them, but there won’t really be any competition for LeBron. I want to see Kobe. I want to see Vince and I will allow my client to enter.” Could he make it happen? “I’m saying it now,” O’Neal said. “So tweet it. Facebook it. E-mail it and hopefully it gets out. Vince, we’re calling you out. Kobe, we’re calling you out. We’re calling everybody out. If those guys step up in the dunk contest, then I will allow my client to step up.” James has decided to skip next month’s event in Dallas after originally saying he would participate.
  17. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) Do we want a commercial that says choose abortion?? sure. fair and balanced.
  18. QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) Personally - I don't think it is a very good stage to be promoting such a high political/religious topic that can go both ways very easily. But more power to Tebow for standing up for what he believes in! so would it be cool for a KKK guy to stand up for what he believes in for a Super Bowl Ad? How about a Successionist? Nazi? Pro-Drug Supporter? NAMBLA? Why can't everyone just sit down, enjoy something together, without one side trying to capitalize it to their benefit?
  19. Karma's a crazy thing... The Senate was 59-41 in January 2009 and it's 59-41 in January 2010. Arlen Specter's party switch made it 60-40 for about 8 months, but then things somehow get back to the way they were intended.
  20. Dow Closes at 10725. Highest level since that faithful October 1st 2008 day when all he*l broke loose.
  21. i think that goes back to my lack of understanding. short term, real time, you effect both the income and expense level when govt lays off employees. long term, if that said employee gets employed elsewhere, in the private sector, then your income level rebounds while the expense level stays reduced. to answer your question, why does every recovery lead to higher levels of unemployment... i'm not sure if that is horribly true. In 1968 the unemployment rate (3.4-3.7%) was nearly identical to the unemployment rate in 2000. (3.8-4.1%) The 1989 recovery (the bottom of the curve from the 1983 recession) had lower unemployment rates than 1979 from the 1975 recession.
