Shaq wants stars to dunk

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer Jan 19, 11:27 pm EST

CLEVELAND (AP)—Shaquille O’Neal(notes) has a plan to save the NBA’s All-Star dunk contest: Bring back the superstars and do it for devastated Haiti.

Following Tuesday night’s win over Toronto, O’Neal was asked if he would like to see teammate LeBron James(notes) participate in this year’s event. That’s when he offered his idea. He would like to see former dunk champion Vince Carter(notes), Kobe Bryant(notes) and others take part along with James.

“As his manager, I will only allow ‘Bron to do the dunk contest if Vince Carter comes back out,” O’Neal said. “If Kobe comes back out and if another big name comes back out. If we could get a big prize and have half of the money go to the people of Haiti and the other half to the winner.

“The guys that are in it, no disrespect to them, but there won’t really be any competition for LeBron. I want to see Kobe. I want to see Vince and I will allow my client to enter.”

Could he make it happen?

“I’m saying it now,” O’Neal said. “So tweet it. Facebook it. E-mail it and hopefully it gets out. Vince, we’re calling you out. Kobe, we’re calling you out. We’re calling everybody out. If those guys step up in the dunk contest, then I will allow my client to step up.”

James has decided to skip next month’s event in Dallas after originally saying he would participate.

That for sure would draw a ton of interest.

Talk about calling guys out.

All we need is for Kobe to pull a hamstring and miss two months afterwards for this to become a mess.

This supposively is a Jay Mariotti idea according to himself on Around the Horn.

I like the idea. Bring back the real competitors in the dunk contest. Would be for a good cause, I'd love to watch.

VC said no.

VC is also a shadow of his former self.

I miss the days of Spud Webb, Dominique, MJ....

Yeah- for sure, I always thought it was pointless having random guys in the dunk contest that the mainstream/average fan couldn't relate to.

LETS SEE KOBE!!!!!!

I've lost total interest in the dunk contest. Unless the NBA buts a moat of alligators in the paint and make it look like the atari game Pitfall, I dont think I'd ever watch again.

He could do that in a preseason game. With that said, the dunk contest has been dead (save for 2000) for well over a decade.

VC hates Haitians.

Vince Carter doesn't care about black people.

They still do the dunk contest?

I always watch but its never that good. There is always one dunk that stands out but thats it.

Put LeBron, Kobe, Vince and Shannon Brown in. That would be a great one.

If the NBA ever wonders why I am not interested in it as much as I used to be, here is a great example of why.

Change Shannon Brown to Dwight Howard and I agree. (and yes I know Shannon is a good dunker)

Why do so many pine for Kobe? Don't people remember 1997? Don't get me wrong. A couple of the dunks were nice. But he certainly didn't "wow" anybody. He's never been a "great" dunker. And at 31, I don't think he would add much to the contest other than name recognition.

Because he's a name & he's won it before.

I've really enjoyed dwight howard the last few years. Usually for big men it's hard to make their dunks look "cool" because it looks so effortless. The leg-kicking of jordan and smaller plays looks so much more poetic. But Howard's are so creative and damn near violent. I love watching him in the dunk contest.

No Dwight. When he did the Super Man dunk, IT WASN'T EVEN A DUNK!
