2013-2014 NHL thread

All these games airing on WGN is getting a little irritating. Another one I cant watch. -
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 03:05 PM) None. But money can be spent other ways. By, say, trading for a guy who has a few years left on a higher contract. I think you're arguing for the sake of arguing. Everyone, including Rick Hahn, knows that there are no free agents waiting to be signed in July. He's talking about spending money by trading and committing to contracts that they're not in a position to right now. Yep. That's Marty's MO all right. Biggest troll on this board.

With his two assists last night, Patrick Kane is now on pace for a 100 point season. If he does that and the Hawks keep winning, he has a legit shot at the Hart trophy. -

Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 01:58 PM) I don't know if you should have been hoping to get Ethier anyways. Agreed. I would want no part of that contract. He still has something like $70 million guaranteed over the next 4 years. He's a good player, but he's not that good. -
Brewers moving their efforts towards Loney, so probably not interest in Dunn.
-
Hart just agreed to a one year deal with the Mariners.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 12:52 PM) I definitely think you're thinking the right way and it makes some sense but it is highly contingent on what happens with Corey Hart this week. Sounds like the odds are high that Hart is going to stay with the Brewers from what I've been reading.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) .400 OBP is not a realistic goal for him. In the minors there is enough bad pitching that you can get a big OBP just by being patient and not swinging at bad pitches, but in the majors you have to have some serious power to get walked enough to have a .400 OBP. I looked it up, and in the last ten years, the three lowest SLG totals for a hitter who had a .400+ OBP season are Nick Johnson .405, and Joe Mauer .446 and .451. I don't see Eaton ever slugging .446 or better in the majors, so there is one case in the last ten years of somebody hitting .400 OBP with a SLG that Eaton can reasonably attain. Not faulting the kid for having goals, but it ain't happenin'. Just to have a little fun and throw some numbers out there. If Eaton hits .300 and let's say he gets 550 ABs, he would need to have around 10 homers, 7 triples and 35 doubles to give him a .446 slugging. Those are all numbers that I don't think are too unrealistic if he is as fast and plays as hard as everyone states. -
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 11:17 AM) Surely I'm not the only one you said this to in regards to this subject? It's so fun watching somebody completely unravel over absolutely nothing on a message board.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 10:48 AM) Is 15 homers fringe power anymore? Without looking it up or doing any calculations, I would guess that 15 homers would be right at or maybe even slightly higher than the Major League average for a starting position player. -
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 11, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Ok, I asked someone I know that has dealt with aj while he was on the team. His reply. "Not an asshole but he had his moments" I'll take that over some guy who worked for teams that aj never played for. Are you still talking?

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:33 PM) Haha, nice quiz. I got 9/10. The only one I missed was the Svensson/Svelvik. I had the right answer, but then I went back and changed it. Damn. 7/10. Though I will admit I guessed on a couple. -
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 09:28 PM) And who the f*** are you? Are you a sox employee? Or just someone who claims to know behind the scenes info?t If you're questioning ptatc, you've not been paying attention for however long you've been on this site.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) This scouting report, plus the injury to his throwing arm, last season seemed to indicate that his arm was not good enough to profile in RF: http://baseballprospectnation.com/2012/08/...-adam-eaton-of/ It should be fine in CF. Wasn't the injury to his right arm? -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) You're right, I was looking at outdated information. That's still not a bad price. For his production, no it's not at all. But if he is going to end up being a 4th outfielder for us, I'd much rather give the spot to Danks at 1/5th the cost because there will probably not be a big enough drop off to warrant an extra $2.5-$3 million. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:37 AM) Bench players routinely make $3.5 million, and the Sox aren't forced to move him. This does to hurt De Aza's value that he hasn't already done himself. I also have no idea where that $3.5 million value came from. He's going to be arbitration eligible for like the first time next year. I'm guessing he gets closer to $2-2.5 million, which, comparatively speaking, is a significant amount less. De Aza is in his 2nd year of arbitration. He made just over $2 million last year so he's probably looking around $3-$3.5 million this year. -

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:31 AM) Or he's our 4th outfielder off the bench, which is better than Danks IMO. When it comes to a 4th outfielder, give me a $600,000 Danks over a $3,500,000 De Aza any day of the week. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 10:59 AM) Too much smoke for something not to happen. Eaton would be a good fit. If the trade goes off as stated with the Sox sending Santiago to acquire Eaton, there will have to be subsequent moves in the works. Probably a De Aza trade of some sort.
-
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) He put up nice numbers in the minors, but hasn't done much in the majors. I thought he was speedy guy, but apparently not many steals? I seem to remember people talking about him having insane speed when he was in the minors. I could be wrong though. He was also like a .350 hitter across all levels of minor league ball. He's hardly played at the Major League level yet.
-
Seems to me that the plan is to trade one of Quintana/Santiago (or Danks, but unlikely) and go into the season with a rotation of Sale, 2 out of the 3 of Quintana/Santiago/Danks, Johnson and Paulino. Still not a bad looking rotation depending on how Johnson progresses and Paulino recovers. Rienzo will either be kept in the minors for depth or looked to be traded.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 10:48 AM) When do they announce the main ballot results Writers ballots need to be turned in by the end of the year. Inductees are announced on the 8th of January.
-
I've got a feeling the Sox are going to be pretty active.
-
Judging by what some of these FAs got, especially Kazmir, if Danks can prove at all that he's even 85%-90% of his former self, there is no reason the Sox shouldn't be able to trade him at the deadline if they wish. You're return might be minimal, but the way the market is I don't really think Danks is overpriced much at all.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 10:38 AM) Sterling Sharpe was going to be in the Hall of Fame. He was going to play another 5 or 6 years with Brett Favre throwing to him. Probably would of had another 50 td's. I still think at some point he gets in the Hall. He seems to have more and more support as the years go on.
