With the posting fee, that averages out to $25 million for 7 years. That is an asinine number to guarantee a guy that has never pitched in the Major Leagues.
-
At that cost, no thank you.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 08:19 AM) Nobody has ever had to pay the posting fee upfront. The Athletics won the rights to negotiate with a player about 5 years ago or so and couldn't come to an agreement with the player and, as a result, never paid the posting fee. You only pay the posting fee if you sign the guy. I was under the impression in the old system that the winning team paid the posting fee and then it was returned if no contract could be agreed upon.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 07:59 AM) That's what I gathered, but it's hard to get through all the high schooler tweets and My Little Pony discussions. Thanks. I originally understood it differently, but that makes sense. Technically, a mystery team could still sneak in and blow him out the water with a big deal, as long as they bid the original refundable posting fee. They didn't actually even have to do that. It's basically just a contingency to his contract the winning bidder has to pay Tanaka's team the $20 million. It isn't like the old days where the highest bidder had to pay the posting fee up front just for the right to negotiate. I believe it can be paid over a 2 year period too. If I remember correctly, I believe I heard that $13 million is due the first year and $7 million the next or something like that.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 07:51 AM) Can teams still change their contract offers or are they set in stone from when you bid on him? Is it just posturing now or can there be contract negotiation still going on right now? Tanaka is like any other free agent right now. The team that signs just has to pay the $20 million posting fee. Contract negoitations can still be on going. Teams did not have to put in blind bids or anything like that.
-
The longer this has gone on, the better I've felt about the Sox' chance to land him. We all know the Sox are probably not going to offer the biggest contract and chances are if Tanaka was simply out to get the biggest contract, it probably would have been done by now.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Posted mainly by you. It's more relevant to talk about my little pony dude. Ah man, don't tell me you're a Brony.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) wang chu @nflnbainsider 20m sources saying #Yankees sign #tanaka 6 year 130 mil Retweeted by AP III Expand Well if wang chu says it, it has to be true.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) Except Darvish makes around 10 mil a year and this guy could make double. Darvish would have gotten a much larger contract with the new posting rules though. I think the Rangers paid over $50 million for the posting fee.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) Compared to the MLB draft, that's a good track record. Very true, but nobody is committing $100+ million dollars to draft picks.
-
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:40 PM) The Japanese league is considered the 2nd strongest baseball league in the world and has a decent track record of pitchers having successful transitions. We committed 68 million to a Cuban who has never seen a MLB pitch and that deal is widely applauded, I don't see the big difference in risk here. There's been about as many Japanese players that have completely flopped as there has been that have succeeded.

How Rick Hahn Has Revamped Chicago's Offense

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) If Dayan posts a 107 wRC+, he'll be here for a while. That would be a logical step given how competitive he was against RHP last year, especially down the stretch. He was actually worse against LHP than RHP last year, whereas he had been absolutely otherworldly against lefties in the past. Consistency seems to be one of Viciedo's biggest detriments. If he could get more consistent, I have no doubt he can easily put up a 107 wRC+. He's proven that he can be a dominant player when he's going good. -

QUOTE (Tannerfan @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 01:35 PM) Am I wrong or is trading DeAza a problem because we are so lacking in left handed hitters? Even if De Aza is still here, he's probably not starting so does it really matter? If he stays he will probably be taking Jordan Danks spot who is also a left handed hitter. -
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 12m One official involved in the Masahiro Tanaka bidding believes the winning contract is going to fall somewhere in the six-year, $120M range. Jeff Passan @JeffPassan 3m For what it's worth, plenty of the rumors -- which most believe are spurious -- have the Cubs in as the high bidder, blowing away the field. There we go. Finally a tweet from an actual at least somewhat reliable source.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 11:03 AM) Also interesting that it doesn't seem to be allowing for progress from Viciedo. Viciedo is projected in the article at a 107 wRC+, up from a 96 wRC+. That's a fairly substantial improvement. -

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) If Tanaka is not a fan of snow and cold, this is a bad year for Chicago to have such a brutal winter. Of course baseball is played in the spring and summer, but at this rate it will be snowing on opening day. A cold snowy winter combined with an unusually early opening day could make for a miserable first couple weeks of the season.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) At this point, does anyone here REALLY want the Chicago White Sox to spend like $25 million per season on a Japanese import whose k/9 went way down and bb/9 went way up over the last two years? I don't want to see them go to $25 million or to 7 years, but the years scare me more than the yearly salary. I would like to see them sign him, but only if it stays around 5/100 or 6/120 and I don't think that will get it done. He already has a lot of mileage on that arm and I'd be nervous about handing out a 7 year deal to any pitcher unless the dollars were low. All that being said, if they sign him, the fanboy in me will be excited no matter what the cost.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:41 AM) God some of the noobies here are making this thread unbearable to read at times. Yep. I swear about half this thread is made up of posts by the same 2 or 3 people and about 75% of those posts add nothing to the discussion.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 08:27 AM) Like k0na. Oh wait I think we can all agree that k0na is a pretty rare exception.

Why do people keep posting tweets from these random people. If it isn't a tweet from Rosenthal/Olney/Heyman or a select few others, who cares? Do you really think these people have more insight than those I've mentioned?

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) No s***. What wite said reminded me of that, so I posted it. Yeah right. You got busted for thinking that site was legit and now you're just trying to defend yourself. Can't fool me. -
In regards to tweets, I personally feel that if Rotoworld doesn't deem them legit enough to post, then 90% of the time they don't mean a damn thing.

2013-2014 NFL Thread

Anybody disagree that Sherman is the biggest douche in the NFL? -
My god has this thread gotten pathetic. Page after page of complete nonsense having nothing to do with Tanaka.
