  1. QUOTE (RegionSox @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) I always wondered why baseball makes the manager and coaches wear the uniforms. You don't have that in any other sport. Baseball is the only sport where the coaches and manager enter the field of play. How ridiculous would the 1st and 3rd base coaches look wearing a suit?
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) I would delete Baines & Guillen from that list. And I've never heard of Charley Lau. Charley Lau was the hitting coach in 82 and 83. He died during Spring Training of 84. His number 6 is not retired, but has not been issued since except to his disciple Walt Hrniak. It is basically "unofficially" retired.
  3. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) I'm ok with Hall of Famers getting their number retired, or guys that played with the Sox for 15 years. Minoso is ok. Konerko will be fine. Buehrle will eventually--he's borderline. 3, 6, 13, and 19--I'd unretire. And I agree with JPN about the coaches poaching low numbers. Those should be for current players. Baseball is a low number sport. I kind of like the way the Red Sox do it. I believe their rules are that you have to be a HOFer AND play 10 years with the team. They did make an exception for Pesky though I believe. I would kind of like to see our Sox use a similar method going forward, but I would have no problem with them making exceptions for guys who didn't quite meet the requirements, but were close and had connections to a "special" Sox team. I.E. Buehrle and Konerko for '05.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 09:33 AM) What's more obnoxious is on a team with few low numbers available, you have a bench coach wearing 8. Coaches shouldn't wear numbers like that unless they have a specific connection with it. Baines in 3, that's okay. But Parent and Boston need to give up their numbers. I kind of agree on the coaches thing, but I would be willing to bet that if Davidson, Eaton or Abreu wanted one of their numbers they would be giving them up.
  5. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 09:24 AM) It'll be f***ing awesome if Abreu actually wears 79 all season. That's his plan. His mother picked it out for him because she thought it would be an easy number to be remembered by.
  6. QUOTE (black jack @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 07:19 AM) In fact, the thought of any number (other than 42) being "retired" is stupid. Honor the player's name don't take away the numbers. Disagree 100%. There are 100 numbers to choose from. Having a small percentage out of service to honor the legends of your team's history is not a big deal. While some teams get pretty ridiculous with it (Padres and Randy Jones, Devil Rays and Wade Boggs, Angels and Gene Autry, etc.), I would never want to see another Sox player wear 35 again.
  7. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 01:08 AM) Because they aren't good enough. Yea? Well, ya know, that's just like your opinion man.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 01:03 PM) This just makes me even more angry at the f***ing Corey Crawford contract. I'm not crazy about Crawford's contract either, but I certainly like it better than the one the Rangers gave Lundqvist a couple weeks. I think it was like 7/$58 for a soon to be 32 year old.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 09:18 AM) Raanta has been really impressive. At this point I don't know how they could bring back Khabibulin unless they want Raanta playing every day. I would have to guess that Khabibulin's NHL career is over. Shame he had to go out with an injury, but it is what it is. I see them keeping Raanta as the backup but giving him a fair number of stars.
  10. I voted for a combination of things. While I have always had the thought that smaller helmets would force players to quit using them as weapons, there would be a lot of growing pains/additional head injuries as players broke old habits. I think a big thing that should be worked on is proper tackling form. This should start at the lowest levels of organized football and work its way up. I've never understood the whole philisophy of launching yourself at a guy to try and make a tackle. To me, a well executed form tackle is a thing of beauty and if players were taught how to properly tackle and forced to properly tackle by the rules put in place, the number of head injuries should decline.
  11. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:32 AM) That's not why an "Extra DH" was signed. Konerko was signed because he the owner didn't let his baseball people do their jobs in this instance. JR said Konerko could come back and since he wanted to come back, he's back. It has nothing to do with Dunn or anyone else regardless of what the team or media says. Hahn had his arms tied behind his back. I agree. The Konerko signing had nothing to do with Dunn. It was merely a sentimental signing with the thought that he can help mentor the young players. There is zero chance that we would have had a "Extra DH" if his last name wasn't Konerko.
  12. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:35 AM) Stop using bWAR. Just because you don't like a stat doesn't make it wrong. While I also like fWAR better than bWAR (especially regarding pitchers), the people who developed bWAR know a hell of a lot more about advanced statistics than some random guy on a message board and should not be discounted just because you don't like their methods.
  13. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:25 AM) He would be able to play the position was is best suited for. A super sub who can give rest to any infielder and fill in for stretches when one is hurt. I do not like Keppinger in that role for this team. We have the perfect guy for that in Garcia. While Keppinger can play multiple positions, he is not really good at any of them and is slow as dirt. I like my backup IF/OFers to be plus defenders and have speed.
  14. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:13 AM) Why the hell would the Score hire Levine? Why the hell would ANYBODY hire Levine?
  15. Kane now has a point in 22 of the last 23 games. 11 of those being multiple point games.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 07:42 AM) Every single one of the Cowboys fans I know defends him irrationally whenever he is brought up and often when he wasn't even part of the conversation to begin, so no. Yep. This is the case with me too. I don't know a lot of Cowboys fans, but the ones I do know absolutely love him. One of my buddies tried to actually argue that Romo was in the Rodgers, Brady, Manning class of QBs.
  17. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 07:28 AM) In keeping with Hahn's plan of building a solid core for the future; why not "give" Dunn to Houston, or any team for that matter, in exchange for another young player who could fill a long term need for the Sox? Just pay whatever portion of the last year of Dunn's contract, that team wants, in return for a young player who fits in the front office's 3 to 5 year plan. What portion of Dunn's contract the Sox would pay would be a function of how good the prospect is. Perhaps Stassi would be a name that might meet that description, and provide a solution to the catching void. With Castro, the Astros don't need another young catcher: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/...ect-max-stassi/ To get rid of Dunn at this point would be a pure salary dump. The Sox would end up paying a huge chunk of his contract to get really nothing of value in return. If we are going to be paying him anyway, the best bet is to play him and hope he has a good first half and try to move him at the deadline. At that point he will only have around $5 million or so left on his contract and the Sox could probably get something of value from a contending team. There is really no point in getting rid of him to just get rid of him, especially when it is going to cost you a fortune to do so.
  18. I'd say there is not a very good chance that Keppinger is still with the Sox come opening day. If Davidson makes the team, there is absolutely no room for Keppinger on the roster. I bet the Sox dump him even if they have to pay a good portion of his salary.
  19. I also like Lucroy, but I imagine the Brewers would be asking a king's ransom for him. I'm definitely not ready to give up Hawkins yet.
  20. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) Aaron Rodgers still not cleared to play according to ESPN. Was he expected to be back this week? He hasn't been cleared because he has not yet been evaluated this week. That will happen on Wednesday. Signs are definitely pointing towards him playing Sunday though as he was very close to getting clearance for the Cowboys game.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 03:05 PM) Jones Lindstrom Belisario Paulino (presumably he has to be on a big league roster) Petricka/Webb 2 lefties Looks like the basic setup for the pen to me as of now, am I missing anything? Perhaps Rienzo/Johnson could struggle in ST and Paulino take a position in the rotation with both Petricka and Webb taking bullpen slots, but I'd rather push the kids. Looks about right. I think Veal has got to be a lock for one of the lefty spots though.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 02:59 PM) Well put. I hope this guy makes the team out of spring training. Then I will purchase mlb.com if I don't have to watch Kepp/Gillaspie any more. This gives us Davidson at third, Lexi at short, Semien at second and Abreu/Paulie at first. That could be a winning infield if like you say, we get lucky. Now I'd trade Beckham for a catcher or another reliever. If we want to win, we still need a catcher who can hit a bit. I hope Davidson is good. At least on paper he's as good as any team's prospect there, like a Moustakas, etc. This guy has the credentials to be a big leaguer. Who's our closer now? Are you some secret millionaire? Otherwise how the hell do you have enough coin to purchase mlb.com? I'd have to imagine that site is worth millions.
  23. QUOTE (daa84 @ Dec 15, 2013 -> 07:18 PM) As do the bears True, but if Rodgers comes back the Pack has to be the favorite of the two.
  24. If the Lions lose tomorrow night, the Packers control their own destiny.
