  1. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:08 AM) I vote for a strong retool. Basically every starter except for A Garcia should be replaced. they absolutely should deal De Aza, who as a decent hitter, might bring something in return, but whose brain dead play needs to be off this team. Ramirez too. They need a complete culture change, but obviously that wont' happen because of the retention of Ventura. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 12:37 AM) I thought we could keep A. Garcia, Viciedo (pray he can become a hitter) and Dunn (where's he gonna go) and get rid of basically everybody else. I really don't get everyone's hatred of Ramirez. He had a fWAR of 3.1 this year and using a value of $5 million per WAR, he is actually underpaid. Sure his homers were down again this year, but he hit 39 doubles giving him 47 extra base hits which is well above his career average.
  2. QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 07:02 AM) In 2011 he only played in 129 games- 35 of which were with the Blue Jays. He missed 15 Blue Jay games because of injury. I never said he was never on the DL. Nearly every player is going to have DL stints at some point or another. A player who averages 138 games played per year (would be higher if not for LaRussa's vendetta against him) is NOT injury prone. In Rasmus's 118 games this year he gave far more value than Markakis did, so who gives a s*** if Markakis played in more games.
  3. QUOTE (ChiSoxFan05 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 06:38 AM) Ok fine (about their defense) but keep in mind you're getting Rasmus for 135 games and Markakis for 162 (except one year). Rasmus has averaged 138 games per year over his career, and that includes many games where LaRussa sat him just because he didn't like him (which has been well documented). He has never had any injury problems except for this year. Have any other arguments against Rasmus that you need disproven?
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 07:21 PM) $20M for Colby Rasmus???. Rasmus was a 4.8 fWAR player this year despite only playing 118 games. He's just coming into his prime, so if he keeps playing at that level, I don't think $20M is out of the question. Probly closer to $15m, but lets see what kind of season he has next year.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2013 -> 10:08 AM) Does anyone when they would cut off selling tickets on stubhub for tomorrows game? If the ticket has the electronic delivery option ( which costs like $5), I believe you can buy right pretty much right up until game time.
  6. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 27, 2013 -> 07:50 AM) Whomever thought that episode of The League was a good idea should be fired. I agree. That was pathetic. I think I'm about done with The League all together. The first couple seasons were great, but it has really gone down hill. They just keep using the same jokes over and over and the random NFL players showing up is getting ridiculous.
  7. Yea I don't think this is a retirement announcement. Meeting with the media is a usually a quick "q and a" in the locker room before tonights game. If he were retiring it would be an offical press conference. I imagine this "addressing the media" is going to come down to nothing more than saying he's going to wait until the offseason, reevaluate things and go from there. I don't think this is going to be much of anything. I could be wrong though.
  8. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 25, 2013 -> 08:03 PM) And then there's the VEntura strategy. Over-use pitchers, never sit Alexei (he still won't in September garbage time) intentionally walk Chris Getz...heck, whenever a team has a runner on and base open when they can walk off, intentionally walk the batter to clog the base (that nonsense has cost us several games). 2 runners on down 2 in the 9th? Bunt the ball. He's a lousy manager all the way around. Where do I begin? "Over-use pitchers" Ok first, in whose opinion has Ventura overused his staff? Yours? You know more than Ventura and Cooper about what a Major League pitcher can and can't do? The only person that was overused in my opinion was Crain and Ventura was forced into that by the fact that the rest of the bullpen was hot garbage and we were still somewhat in it at that point. "Never sit Alexei (he still won't in September garbage time)" If Alexei is the best option and is physically able to play everyday, why not play him? He has, in fact, sat out two games in September. Not a lot but some. Ventura has rotated the young players around enough to give them all plenty of playing time. I have no problem with the way Ventura handled this. "Intentionally walk Chris Getz" If you honestly have a problem with this, then I really question your baseball knowledge. The game where Getz was intentionally walked was a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the 10th with 2 outs, a runner on second, Omogrosso pitching and Kotarras on deck. In this situation, Getz's run meant absolutely nothing. Getz has a better chance of beating you than Kotarras and I'm wouldn't be surprised if Omogrosso was given the option of who to pitch to. This was the right call in this situation. "Intentionally walk the batter to clog the bases" This is usually done to set up a double play. If you have a problem with Ventura doing this, then you must have a problem with every manager that has ever managed because they ALL do it. "2 runners on down 2 in the 9th" If these runners are at first and second with no outs, this is the right play (depending on whose batting). I would have a hard time believing this happened this year other than if there were 2 on nobody out. You would have to provide some sort of evidence for me to believe it and I bet you can't. All in all, Ventura is not a great manager but is nowhere near as bad as some make him out to be. As pathetic as the team played this year, it did not matter who was manager.
  9. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 23, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) I think there are a bunch of guys lumped at the top. Sale should be top 3, but I won't feel ripped off when he doesn't win it. I just hope he land sin the the top 5 somewhere so people will think to look at his numbers. I think the voters are willing to overlook W/L record if all the other numbers blow everyone else away. There are too many guys having similar seasons to Sale for the voters to ignore W/L. That being said, I agree with you 100%. Should be top 3 will probably be 4-5.
  10. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) Thanks for the update. I was wondering what was up with Crain. If the Rays get a final week out of him what do we get in return I wonder? Plus if they take a wild card spot does Jesse get to play ? Players that were on the DL as of the September 1 cutoff are eligible for postseason play. So yes Crain will get to pitch in the playoffs if they get there.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) Not a bad theory. Nice post. Not be be accused of living in 2005, but I did tell you folks Mark Buehrle was a coach on the mound. He was a GREAT EXAMPLE for all our other starters. But noooo we let him and his fast, fast, did I say fricking FAST, manner of pitching go somewhere else. Judging by the contract he signed, letting him go was 100% the correct decision.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 18, 2013 -> 09:06 PM) Why does Robin even put Dunn in the lineup? He looks disinterested, not that I blame him. He might look disinterested, but the guy still hustles down the line on every play. Something I cannot say about Konerko.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 18, 2013 -> 01:57 PM) Sure - but to vote I had to "like" that facebook page, which I couldn't bring myself to do. I wasn't necessarily directing that at you. I just get annoyed when people call guys like McCarver "hall of fame broadcasters".
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 15, 2013 -> 10:57 AM) do you just leave yours on? Didn't you ever see that episode of South Park? I thought you were just supposed to leave one on all the time. At least that's what I do, safer that way.
  15. Just to clear something up. Ford C. Frick Award winners are not inducted into the Hall of Fame and are not considered "Hall of Famers". They just get their name on a fancy plaque and get to give a speech on Hall of Fame induction day.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 16, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Because the bullpen is a mess right now too. Realistically, we can say there are, minimum, 6 places that can be improved upon - LF, CF, 3B, 2B, 1B/DH, and C (if you want to compete next year, you are going to have to do it with Dunn because if you want him gone, you'll have to eat money (which then obviously can't be spent anywhere else) which limits how much you can spend on a replacement). If you sign Abreu, McCann, and Choo and somehow able to deal De Aza and Beckham for Sandoval, you are left with (and this would be my ideal lineup, but probably not the real lineup): Choo - RF (5/$100) Dunn - DH Sandoval - 3B ($8.25 in '14) Abreu - 1B (6/$72) McCann - C (4/$60) Garcia - RF Semien - 2B Viciedo - LF Ramirez - SS I think that team has a chance, but you are talking about big weaknesses at the end of the lineup, and then you still have to worry about putting together a bullpen. Reed, Jones, Webb, Petricka, and Lindstrom are probably your righties. For lefties, we could be talking about signing guys or using Veal/Leesman or anything in between. It's young, and it's got some talent, but I don't think it's overall really that impressive. I'm not sure that team wins the division...and frankly, you are adding $55 million in new guys alone, which does not seem realistic, so get rid of Choo or McCann. On top of that, you become the '07 Cubs if you sign all those guys. You end up with crummy contracts scattered throughout your team and once a few of them fall apart, you are screwed and can't get rid of them. No, you show patience. Sale, Quintana, Santiago, Danks, Rienzo, and Johnson are all under contract through at least 2016. There is plenty of time to build a winner with this rotation. Build it slowly and do it right. BTW, I understand why everybody loves the rotation, because it is very talented, but their rotation ERA is 3.99, which is 16th in the MLB and perfectly average. Compare the Sox rotation to the Tigers rotation and tell me whose rotation you'd rather have based solely on talent. I can tell you which I want. Take it nice and slow, there's no need to compete for a division and introduce more poor contracts into the mix when you have maybe a 5% chance of winning the division. I don't mind that lineup (other than the fact that you have two right fielders), but I just can't see giving Choo 5/100.
  17. Only in Greg's world is Dunn's .754 OPS so bad that he should retire, but Konerko's .685 is so good he is deserving of a 3 year contract. At this point you have to be trolling right?
  18. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 02:36 PM) He hit 19 HR in the minors this year, but I think that was a surprise to most people. He's probably a 10-15 HR guy in the majors, but he is also still young, so this season could have been an indication of developing more power. Someone else could probably tell you better. That double he hit last night over the center fielder's head really showed that he has decent pop. Maybe not a big homerun hitter, but I could see 15-20 with 40 doubles.
  19. 1. Dave Chappelle - Funny 10 years ago. Not so much anymore. 2. Kevin Hart - Used to like him, but he's getting a little annoying and is shoved down our throats too much. 3. Aziz Ansari - Hilarious. Whether it be Parks and Rec or standup. Good all around. 4. Rickey Smiley - Never heard of him. 5. Zach Galifanakis - Yes. Been a fan from way back before he got big. 6. Daniel Tosh - Yes and no. Hilarious at times, but really misses the mark others. 7. Hannibal Buress - Have not heard a ton, but is hilarious when he's on Bob and Tom. 8. Sarah Silverman - Always thought she was overrated. 9. Bill Burr - Not real familiar with his work. The little I've seen has been good. 10. Louis C.K. - The best comedian performing today. Hands down. Other good ones not mentioned - Jim Gaffigan, Tom Green (his standup is hilarious), David Cross, Mike Birbiglia, and many others. Who I can't stand - Anthony Jeselnik, Amy Shumer, Terry Fator
  20. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) Salazar on pace for 21ks He isn't going to come close. Already thrown 57 pitches. He'll be lucky to go 6 innings.
  21. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) That wouldn't explain why were the only day game today... No, but they've done it in years past for the same reason. Maybe Jerry just has a lot of respect for the Jewish players/fans and wants the game to be done so they honor the holiday correctly.
  22. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) Let's win one. But, it is a strange time. Maybe because Jewish people can't participate after a certain hour on this holiday? I think you're probably right. I believe that the holiday and fasting period officially begins at sunset.
  23. QUOTE (MEANS @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 07:47 AM) I never understood the purpose of these threads....just print out/look up the schedule from the Sox site, listed on every game is what station it will be on. Doesn't make a difference if your in town or out of town... I don't know. I think it's nice to give the out of town people a heads up. When you only get to see maybe one game a week it's easy to forget about it with our busy lives so it's nice to have a reminder. Also, many of the Fox/ESPN games aren't always listed on the schedule. I think all of us in market folks take it for granted that we can just turn on the tv every night and have the Sox on. If you don't like the threads, just don't open them.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 11, 2013 -> 09:06 AM) I saw you guys had a discussion on this, but B-R has these numbers widely available under team batting splits. Sox #3 hitters have hit in to 17 DPs. That's actually fewer than #2 hitters, who have hit into 20 DPs. And #5 hitters have hit into 19 DPs. It may be up lately, but Dunn was hitting 3rd for a large portion of the year and, slow as he is, he just does not ground into many double plays due to the TTO threat he is. Consider this: Adam Dunn has hit into fewer double plays this year (2) than Avisail Garcia has with the White Sox (3). Dunn only has 8 at bats in the 3 hole all season.
