QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) Holy f***, are you serious. First of all, Bleacher Report is a joke. The "Yahoo" link you posted was a YAHOO ANSWERS link posted by some moron. The Fangraphs post is from BEFORE ADAM DUNN EVER PLAYED FOR THE WHITE SOX. And Fox News? Thef***cares. I'm totally picturing a "scumbag steve" meme here. Saying something to the effect of "calls bleacher report a joke, promotes and contributes to a site exactly like it".

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 04:35 PM) It'd be like putting Dave Kingman in the Hall. Kingman was the same as Dunn wasn't he? Pathetically bad for stretches with a ton of K's? Then he'd get hot and blast some bombs. Like Dunn, Kingman never played for a playoff team did he? Also didn't Kingman have years where his average was under .200 for a long long stretch? Yea except for the fact that Dunn's OBP is 60 points higher and he already has just about as many homers and RBI' with another 5 or so years to add to those totals, but yea other than that exactly the same.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 02:05 PM) Not all umpires are great at making real-time judgments. And I don't think it's always apparent that chalk did kick up in real-time. That's why it wouldn't be hard to see it via slow-mo instant replay. I totally misread your original post about the chalk.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:56 PM) Yeah it's really not since chalk usually kicks up. I still think umpire's discretion should be used for rewarding bases. I mean, they get to decide how many bases a player gets when the ball goes out of play (not every ground-rule double results with an advance of two bases). They can probably see where the runner is at the time of a call and decide how many bases the runner gets depending on where the ball was hit and the speed of the runner. How is the chalk kicking up if not for the ball hitting it meaning it was fair?

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) Yeah, the former. Can they install that? It works so damn well with tennis. Although I guess it might be expensive for something that won't be used very often. Isn't it used after the fact in tennis? Because that still wouldn't answer the question of what do you do with the runners. I really don't think it's ever hard to judge a fair or foul ball with normal video replay in baseball.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:26 PM) Because most of the time it would actually be two bases and not three. How many guys regularly hit triples anyway? Well I'm thinking more so for the runner that could be standing on first. There are many times where he would score on a double hit down the line.

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) Singleton made me enjoy Darrin Jackson on the radio and I hate Darrin Jackson on the radio. Really that bad? I've only listen to a handful of radio broadcasts since Rooney left. I think Singleton does a decent enough job for ESPN.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:20 PM) The ump should get a reasonable amount of discretion in where they put the baserunners. Or you can do like football does...if its questionable, run the play and see what the end result is before going to the replay. "The ump might give a guy an extra base that could have been a close play at 2nd" is a lot better than "nobody gets anything because we blew the call" If you give the ump some discretion on that, it's going to be two bases everytime as that's the safest call. On current fan interference calls an ump can give more than two bases but how often do you ever see that called? Not very.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) Maybe he just meant he'd be in Chicago soon. Possible, but because the original person tweeted "former White Sox" and Singleton says "I'll be back soon", I read that as stating he will be coming back to the White Sox soon as the city of Chicago was not mentioned in any way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stone leaves even though I believe he has one year left on his deal. Supposedly him and Hawk kissed and made up, but I still don't think Stone likes him. I'm guessing either Singleton is taking Stone's place or DJ is moving back to tv with Singleton taking his radio gig back.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 01:04 PM) Everybody gets two bases. So Konerko hits a blooper that lands on the line in which he has no prayer of stretching out to a double he still gets awarded two bases because the umpire blew the call?
-
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9570618/...ideo-challenges I really do not like replay in baseball. Say the batter hits one down the line with runners on. The ump rules it foul but replay determines it should have been fair. What do you do with the runners?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 01:21 AM) He had another good scoop tonight. I'd be surprised if he went unclaimed. How could a contender turn down a veteran like Paul who knows all about winning? Like you said he can still attack lefties and his pride/adrenaline just might get 20 more feet on those fly balls that might start clearing the fence again.. You are in serious denial.

For what it's worth, I plugged Dunn's numbers into the Bill James Career Assessment tool. It gives Dunn a 50% of hitting 600 homers. If he can hit 35 next year his chances go up to 72%.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:57 PM) I mean on his OPS numbers. I figure the shift takes about 20 to 30 points off his batting average each year. That is about 10-15 hits (mostly singles). If I assume all singles and add 15 hits that improves his OPS last year to about .842 and this year to about .859.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) I could actually see people finding an excuse to keep him out. But yeah, the idea that he's going to continue hitting 27 HR's a year with how he's declined in his early 30's seems seriously ludicrous to me. Even ignoring '11, his OPS has declined from >.900 to ~.800 between 31 and 33. He's definitely on his way down. His OPS has improved from age 31 to age 32 and from age 32 to age 33. While he is obviously not going to keep improving at his age, barring a 2011 type collapse I don't see any reason why he can't keep putting up .800+ OPSs for the next 5 years. He should be hitting his 500th early on in 2015 at the age of 35. You honestly don't think if he has 500 homers at age 35 he can hang on for 600? They put Killebrew and his .256 average in during a time when batting average was still the go to stat. Dunn will likely end up with more hits, runs, 2Bs, HRs, RBIs, and walks.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) Adam Dunn is going to the Hall of Fame? Yeah, I really don't see that happening. If he hits 600 homers he's in.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) A lot of the things I say on here come true. But only Dick Allen has pointed that out on occasion for me. As far as Dunn and Rios. Yes they are my whipping boys for this pathetic baseball team. And yes, Paulie's dropoff has hurt the team just as much. I guess I give Paulie more wiggle room because he had 4-5 really good years in a row. Dunn pretty much was the worst player in the history of mankind for a long long time in Sox uniform. What's the lowest he got that one year, .145, .150? So Paulie gets credit for things he did 5 years ago but Dunn does not? I understand that Dunn wasn't with the Sox at his peak but it seems like you like to forget that Paulie had a couple pretty awful years as well. When all is said and done one of these players is going to be in the Hall of Fame and one is going to fall a little bit short (here's a hint, Konerko isn't getting in). If the idea of Dunn in the Hall of Fame seems ridiculous to anybody, here's the way I look at it. If Dunn plays until he is 39 years old he only needs to average 27 homers to end up with 600+ for his career. There is no way the HOF voters will keep somebody out that has 600+ homers along with 1600+ RBI if they are clean.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 06:10 AM) I find it funny how much Dunn hate still exists. The guy's been one of the Sox's best hitters for the past month or so. His BA is approaching his career average, he still hits homeruns, and he's obviously made an adjustment because he's getting a lot more base hits than he has in the past. All that said, $15 million is too much for him right now, and that's why he wasn't claimed on waivers. Had he been owed $10 million or less he probably would have been claimed. If Dunn has a similar year next year (.225ish, 30+ HRs, 80+RBIs), someone will sign him for a couple years at a discount (less than $10 million per). Honestly, if he can put up a similar year next year, I would be all for signing him to something like a 2/15 deal.
-
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 13, 2013 -> 03:35 AM) Seriously, did Rios or Dunn run over your dog? Its hilarious. He thinks a 33 year old Dunn with an .800+ OPS is worthless and should just retire, but a 37 year old Konerko with his .650 OPS is going to get a 2 year deal all because Konerko's batting agerage is 10 points higher. Talk about clueless.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 12, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) Paulie with a base hit to right. I still think those who think Paulie will retire after the season are mistaken. He's stunk, but not been completely embarrassed this year. If he hits between .240 and .250 wouldn't you think he for sure will want another 2-year deal? I would think he'd want to stay in Chicago. If he signs with another team and truly is finished, that would be mighty embarrassing for Paulie. He would have to have extreme confidence in his not being washed up to go to another franchise I would think. .240 would be ok if he was still hitting 35 homers, but when you only have a .650 OPS its completely unacceptable. Any GM that would give Konerko a 2 year deal after this year should be fired on the spot.

If it takes a deal similar or slightly better than Puig's to get him, sign me up.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 11:53 AM) I'm glad he was scratched. I hate Viciedo hitting 8th. He wasn't going to see any pitches with Flowers behind him. Judging by the Twins starters today, I think everybody is going to get a lot of pitches to hit.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 9, 2013 -> 11:11 AM) For all we know, it may be Hahn doing this too. He may want a 6-12 plus another, or 3 lower level guys, or whatever. It's just unbelievable that a deal hasn't been consummated yet because it really, really makes a lot of sense for both parties. Wait. So after Hahn and Daniels agree to terms they have to have sex to make it official? Never knew that. Guess you learn something new every day.
