I think this makes it less likely that a Rios deal happens. Hahn now has the rest of the month to try to reduce payroll via Dunn--he doesn't have to cave in and take a lame offer from Texas for Rios.
They used Brandon McCarthy in one start of a doubleheader to avoid having anybody start on short rest. Aside from that, the five starters started every single game that season.
Right, but they're already down an outfielder because of Wells and might be down another if Rios is traded, so either way it seems like they'd want to get an outfielder up today.
I just noticed on the Sox website that Garcia is not listed on the 40 man roster. He has to be there, right? He had to be on the Tigers 40 man roster since he was in the majors this season, and you can't lose your roster spot without clearing waviers, even if you're traded. Is this just an oversight on the website?
Just to add one more thing to this: if you trade for a player during the last year of his contract, you no longer have the right to get draft pick compensation for the player. So if Rios gets traded next June, the team who takes him couldn't get a draft pick for him.
It's not public information. Best guess is close of business today or tomorrow.
EDIT: Dallas newspaper is saying the deadline is noon Saturday.
I would give this a 10% chance a deal gets done, 89.99% chance the Sox keep him, and a 0.01% chance the Sox just give him away.
I don't think he's going to take playing time from Phegley, but you do have to have a second catcher and there isn't anybody else worth giving that spot to.
That's exactly why it's not super-important to dump Rios' salary if the Sox aren't getting good talent in return. There isn't anything productive to do with that money.
Given the available FA talent this offseason, the Sox already have more payroll flexibility than they can use, or at least use wisely. Plus, Rios will still be a bargaining chip in the offseason if Texas won't pony up for him now.
Yes, I'm 300 miles from Chicago, 700 miles from Minneapolis, 850 miles from Tampa, and 2000 miles from LA.
I don't much care because I'm actually going to this game, but I think I've gotten the Sox on FOX one time this year.
