The Rangers will face pressure from their fan base if they know they could have had Rios and didn't get him. It's a good bet the "leak" originated from Chicago.
-
With Boston eating Peavy's entire contract, there is absolutely no reason the Sox shouldn't eat up to half of Rios' in order to get better talent in return. There is nothing the Sox are going to spend that extra $5-7M on in 2014 anyway.
-
Also, if Rios does move, can he claim to be "Mr. August"?
-
Yes, claiming does not equal acquiring, but the Rangers have the most incentive to give the Sox something valuable in return for him.
-
If the team that claimed Rios is really interested in getting him and not just claiming to block, the other team looks even more stupid by failing to complete a deal.
-
That's the only thing that makes sense. Maybe Paulie only plays in home games the rest of the season.
-
Tekotte probably comes up in Wells' spot. Garcia only comes up if Rios is traded.
-
Anybody on the 40 man has to clear waivers in order to be traded, though if some team were willing to give somebody up from their 40 for Rios he could come as a PTBNL.
-
Dunn and Reynolds in the same lineup would be bizarre.
-
72 hours is the claiming period, but I think once the claim is awarded there's only 24 hours to get a deal done.
-
Wells got put on waivers. From that point, teams had 3 days to decide whether or not to put in a claim. The Phillies won the claim, meaning that no AL team put in a claim nor did any NL team with a worse record than Philly. Once the claim was awarded, the Sox and Phillies had 24 hours to negotiate, though those negotiations probably consisted of Hahn telling the Phillies "He's yours now" and there you go. Yes, the Sox could have pulled him back but I don't see the point.
-
I don't see the Sox just dumping him on a waiver claim. My guess is no deal gets done and Rios stays.
-
So the Sox didn't pull him back?
-
Right, but they were busted this season for using during previous seasons. My understanding is that the clinic shut down in part because the stuff they were selling was going to be detectable under the new testing system. Do I think it's naive to believe that NOBODY is using? Of course. But I do believe that the percentage of users this year is smaller than it has been in 25+ years.

Official 2013-2014 NCAA Football Thread
cabiness42 replied to Kyyle23's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
This is exactly why the rules are the way they are. If you allow players any kind of income like this, you are opening the door for unlimited money funneled from donors to players. The only change the NCAA can really consider making is a stipend that is fixed and given to every player in FBS. In fact, mandating a stipend for FBS players might cause a nice side benefit in preventing all these small-time FCS schools from moving up to FBS if they know it's going to cost them a lot more. -
I get that there's value in having the 2nd pick compared to the 5th pick, but there's also value in players like Quintana, Santiago, Viciedo, Beckham, Jones, Reed, etc., playing well and gaining confidence through winning games. Even though there is no short-term benefit in winning games, please don't act like there isn't still some value. If nothing else, having the young guys play well and produce some exciting baseball helps next year's ticket sales a bit.

Baseball on TV for the Out-of-Towner Sox fan
cabiness42 replied to elrockinMT's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well, I guess depending on your income and family situation, $100 means different things to different people. If I were single, had plenty of time to watch baseball, and nobody else to spend my money on, I'd have paid it. Of course when I was in that situation I lived in Chicago and didn't need it. Now I have 3 family members demanding my time and money, so $100 for baseball on my computer doesn't make sense. -
The new rule just allows the active roster to expand from 25 to 26 for a DH. It doesn't change the fact that anybody on the active roster must still be on the 40-man roster, though with only 35 there now, it's not a problem.

No kidding. How is that team even over .500? They're terrible.

Steve is practicing winning the Powerball, upon which he would no longer need to care what day of the week it is.

Signing a guy for x years is always a terrible idea. Never give out contracts longer than x-1 years.

Not saying that taking PEDs in the minors isn't wrong, or isn't as bad as doing it in the majors. Again, this particular article is talking about the HALL OF FAME. If in the unlikely event Quintana goes on to have a HOF worthy career, none of his major league numbers will come from the benefit of his PED use while in the minors, which is not true in the case of the others. If Neyer wanted to make the same point you are making, then he should never have put the words HALL OF FAME in his article.
