QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 12:29 PM) Contreras had a history of dominating before coming to the White Sox that Vazquez never had. In Cuba. The MLB is a whole different ballgame. This is Contreras from 2004 and the 1st half of 2005; 2004 (NYY) - 8-5, 5.64 ERA, 82K's, 42BB's. 2004 (CHW) - 5-4, 5.30 ERA, 68K's, 42BB's. 2005 (1st half CHW) - 4-5, 4.26 ERA, 72K's, 48BB's. And Vazquez put up 3 sub 4ERA's for the Expos from 2001 to 2003. Ever since he left them, he hasn't been the same. But he's got the potential to that get back to those type of numbers, if he uses his stuff better and makes the right decisions on the mound.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 03:19 PM) Why exaclty can't the Yankees go after Matsuzuka, Gourriel, and Zito all at the same time? Especially with Sheffield's contract up. Well I think even the Yanks have limits. Let's break it down here; Sheff's making $13M this season. Can't see them picking up his $13M option for next season at this stage. Now when the M's signed Ichiro this is what they had to give up; He was signed to a 3 year $15M deal, AFTER the M's won the right to negotiate with him with a $13.125M bid. So that's about $17M - $18M just for that 1st season that they gave up to get him. But that was 6 years ago. And this season's FA class isn't meant to be a great one. And Matsuzuka is younger than Ichiro was, so all in all he'll probably cost more. Teams could pay $20M or over just for the right to negotiate with him. He'll probably get around a 4 year $50M deal I would imagine. And then you have Zito. He's a Cy Young Winner, doesn't get hurt, and he's right in his prime. He could get 5 years $75M quite easily. So Gourriel's pretty much a luxury for them. They've got Robinson Cano at 2nd base, A-Rod at 3rd, so it's not like they need a huge upgrade there. Remember that Kendry Morales got a 6 year deal that was worth potentially up to $19M IIRC. I'd expect Gourriel to get probably more than that considering his WBC performabce. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 03:22 PM) Why cant we go after him? We wona ring with two of the most popular Cuban players in MLB history, and arguable have the biggest Cuban star heading our rotation. You better believe that has an effect on where these guys will go. Yeah hopefully with our Latino friendly clubhouse, and after what Contreras and Iguchi have done here, players from Cuba, Latin America and Japan would have the White Sox on the top of their list for teams that they would like to play for in the MLB.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 11:53 PM) There's an excellent chance that both Fields and Sweeney will be on the roster next season. Sweeney has been playing some CF in Charlotte, and can probably play all 3 OF positions, and it wouldn't surprise me if Fields plays both LF and 3B for the White Sox next season. Pods will most likely be gone, and either Pablo or Mackowiak will probably be wearing a different uniform. This is all based on the assumption the Fields and Sweeney aren't traded, something KW has said in the past. I'd rather Sweeney be playing everyday down in Charlotte than being a bench player up for the Sox IMHO. With the way Mack and Ozuna have hit this season anyways, I doubt KW will be in any rush to move them unless he gets a good offer.
-
The question on MacDougall is always going to be on his health not his stuff. If he can stay healthy, KW made a very good trade here. If he doesn't, Tyler Lumsden could make us regret it. Welcome to Soxtalk BTW.

QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 08:11 PM) I believe Crede has said he wants to stay a White Sox and will fire his agent if this isn't top priority? I could be wrong...? Where'd you hear this, because it would be music to all of us here if that was indeed the case.

I just see a lot of comparisons b/w Javy and Jose Contreras when he first arrived on the Southside. Javy's just gotta learn not to use than DAMN curveball so much (because when he hangs it, you can say buh - bye), and to start trusting his better stuff like his changeball. And that was always the problem with Jose, getting him to trust his fastball, and not use his forkball so often early in the count, so he'd then fall behind hitters. But if Javy doesn't turn it around, we're gonna regret that trade, because of one Chris Young.
-
JG's up against Jim Johnson who was promoted from AA ball with a 9-5, 4.13 ERA. Needless to say if the Sox don't score quite a few runs and don't win this ballgame, I'll be very, very annoyed.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 09:10 PM) Carrillo would be a very nice fit. He could start 2007 in AAA and soon be up if someone got hurt. It would allow BMac to go into the rotation and trade Freddy probably. With the way Cesar mowed down AA hitters in the southern league, I'm sure the sox noticed his pitching. Linebrink comes, maybe Riske goes. SD is hurting for position prospects-or any other prospects for that matter. Looking at their minor league system, it seems pretty bare. BTW--I see Carrillo is on the DL with a sore right elbow and may be shut down for the yr. That would effect any potential deal [though the "buy low" aspect of getting Carrillo now has some appeal]. With Carrillo being small [175 lbs] getting hurt won't help quiet the questions of his long term effectiveness throwing in the bigs You could actually probably get a decent prospect from someone like the Rockies if you traded Riske to them. I still have concerns over his K/BB ratio over the long - term. I just get the feeling with Fields, the hot streak is finished, and he's coming back to hitting to where he probably will be in the future. With Betamit being traded to the Dodgers, and David Bell also off the market, Kevin Towers may now decide, "Hey if I want Fields, I'm gonna hav to pay over the odds a little for him". QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 09:29 PM) uh, oh, here comes the "last week, before he gave up all those runs, his ERA was..." game. these are always fun. I think if you look at what he's done over the past few seasons, most experts know that he's just in a slump right now, and hey so is Trevor Hoffman for that matter.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 10:17 PM) If one were to casually read this site, I bet that person would believe that. So, so true. Anyways, acquiring Abreu and Lieber, even with trading a starter, would take on quite a bit of extra money for the payroll. I don't really see the need for acquiring Lieber, when we've got B-Mac to step in. I'd rather just make an attempt to acquire Bobby by offering Pods and a SP prospect like Broadway (this offer should be out to many teams who have a good LF), and if the Yanks just acquire them instead, tip your cap to em.
-
If Fields is still with the team past the trade deadline, he should start learning how to play LF immediately. In terms of getting a leadoff hitter, the only other place I could see where you could get an addition in our lineup would be at SS. I've suggested the names of Furcal and Rollins, but their contracts aren't too friendly at all. QUOTE(BobDylan @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 07:51 PM) I don't know much about Fields except he's hitting for a high average. If it's true that he's playing LF, it may be to mark up his trade value. If Podsednik is gone next season, I think KW would sooner go out and get an optimal lead off hitter than put in a high power guy. I figure he's got more trade value as a 3rd baseman than as a LF. Fields' value is at a peak right now. There was a thread yesterday where it said his last month at Charlotte hasn't been great. If you get an offer like Linebrink and Carillo for Fields, I would take it.

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 05:56 PM) Actually I read somewhere that it was for Jon Lieber. I know it is mentioned in that Boston Herald article, but there was another link from Philly that said Crisp for Lieber. Philly may want Boston to take someone like Pat Burrell in a deal like that, and get some more prospects back.
-
If Rogo can adequately handle the OF ok defensively better than say Ross Gload (even after tonight's heroics), Rogo may have a future on this team as a bench player. I don't know if any other organization would see him as a possible everyday player at this stage.
-
There have been a lot of thoughts lately on acquiring a good young leadoff hitter like Carl Crawford. Could Coco Crisp sort of be that guy? If you offered say Pods and a SP prospect would Boston do that? Here's what the Boston Herald said BTW; That could of been us as that team.
-
How would people feel about Fields for Linebrink and Carillo now?
-
Crisp and some stud prospects for Garcia and Pods possibly?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 02:45 PM) So, I'm fairly surprised by this deal, mainly because I think that for the first time in a long time, the Dodgers really overpaid for a player. I like that Aybar kid a lot, and I'm surprised the Dodgers parted with him for a guy who is basically Chipper's backup. And Baez on top of that. I guess the Dodgers are dumping him, but he's still going to be the 2nd best guy in the Atlanta Bullpen, especially if Bobby Cox has any of Mazzone's pixie dust left. Actually I think the Dodgers did well here. Betemit projects to be a very good player, with 25-30 HR potential IIRC.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 12:25 PM) They like the idea of Tejada because he's signed for 3 more years at a reasonable price. Well it's certainly gotten to the point where they need another big bat in the middle of that lineup. Anderson just doesn't cut it (and I know you hate that contract of his Jason). QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 12:26 PM) Oh yeah....I was kinda hoping KW would take a shot at him, but I'm sure the price is too high. Well at least we ended up with someone similar like MacDougall I guess, who has been pitching better than Lidge, but is just more injury prone.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) Thats a great deal the Astros may make for Tejada. Everett and Ensberg are nice, but Tejada is a start and if it costs you one darn good prospect and two decent players for a star you do it, imo. The offer they asked the Angels for was much more ridiculous, but I wouldn't be shocked if the Angels made a last second offer that included some damn good prospects. I would have said someone like Suanders could really influence the O's but with Colon going down Saunders goes off the market as being a final trade chip (along with one or two more bonafide top notch prospects). If the Astros can get Tejada without giving up Hunter Pence or Jason Hirsh, then I think they've done very well. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 12:20 PM) I still we be very surprised if Soriano's not traded for H. Sanchez and another prospect. With Lee being traded, the Tigers probably will concentrate most of their efforts on acquiring Soriano right now I would say. But they shouldn't give in to Bowden's demands. It's not like they desperately need him anyways, with the way they're playing.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) Rumors that Lidge would be in the trade. Probably beneficial for both parties if he was moved I would say.
-
Would Miggy be willing to play 3rd base for the Angels, or would Cabrera move over to 3rd base for him? Don't forget they've got Brandon Wood and the likes of McPherson as well.
-
Interesting there his thoughts on Bowden and the Soriano situation. The Pods and Broadway offer is still there ya know Jim.
-
Here they are; So in other words, say if the Sox offered B-Mac and Uribe, that's very similar to the Angels offer really. Looks like he may be moved after all.
-
If you're the Yankees do you post a huge offer for Daisuke Matsuzuka instead, or do you go for a guy like Gourriel? I would love to go after Gourriel though. He seems more ready though than say a Kendry Morales was when he 1st came over, and getting him would give you options if you wanted to move a Iguchi (which will probably never happen), or if Gourriel wanted to play LF, even better. Either way, it's going to be a VERY interesting off-season.
-
Most crucial win of the season absolutely no doubt about it. We'll be making up ground on somebody tonight. And Ross Gload is GOD for a few days.
-
Just 2 more Bobby.
