QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 12:06 AM) It makes sense that another team would want and overpay to get Zito. The Sox don't really need to, despite the SP's struggles. Now if Zito was under contract for another yr or two, yes KW would probably pull a deal. But he's not. That's why he got a guy in MacDougall who we'll control until 2009 IIRC. Getting Zito doesn't make any sense to me, when I personally think there's better moves to make.

QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 12:02 AM) I guess I don't get it. Aren't the A's in contention? Why are they trading their Ace? Typical Beane move, e.g the Hudson and Mulder deals. He knows that Zito won't be coming back, and if he can get a young stud SP prospect, or even a position player e.g like Dan Meyer and Dan Haren, he'll probably make the deal.
-
FWIW, to get a Zito, we would realistically have to include Brandon McCarthy and that ain't happenin. The right strategy IMHO should be to trade a starter in Garcia or Vazquez to open up a spot for B-Mac, not trade for another starter. Doesn't make sense for a 2 month rental, considering the players you would have to give up.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 11:42 PM) I don't see why the Mets wouldn't just take Zito instead of our DOGSHlT pitchers. Maybe because they think they'll have an excellent chance of signing him as a FA, hence they don't want to give up say Lastings Milledge for him right now.
-
Uhh no thank you. Scott Bora$$ is Barry Zito's new agent. That means we have NO chance of re-signing him once he hits FA. The only way I can see this making sense from a White Sox perspective is if we then spin Zito to a team like New York for other pieces that will help us win now.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 11:00 PM) As far as I see it we still need a relief pitcher. I would not be suprised to see Riske moved, he has not really shown me much. Gload will be gone. And it seems like a big deal involving a starter is upon the horizon. My guess is that: Gload, Riske and Garcia/Vaz are gone by the deadline. If we need a relief pitcher, then I can't see us trading one in Riske. Albeit he hasn't set the world on fire with a 3.77 ERA and a 10/9 K/BB ratio, but he's an important 6th - 7th inning pitcher for us.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 10:22 PM) Heilman likely will be gone soon from the mets for whoever they can get. I saw this on Heilman's espn page: "Jul. 24 News: Heilman's lack of hustle Sunday to first base after fielding a nubber to the left of the mound by Chris Burke resulted in Burke beating him to the bag, leading to Heilman's removal by manager Willie Randolph while being booed by Mets fans as he left the field." --The sox might be able to get more than Humber and Heilman, probably an A level prospect for Freddy So long as we can get the deal done, I am perfectly happy with Humber and Heilman for Garcia. You save about $8-9M with that, and that money can be put in FA to help upgrade our bullpen (with an acquisition like Hawkins), or an upgrade somewhere in our lineup (e.g a Furcal for Uribe and spects trade).

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 10:51 PM) I wonder how long this season Twins fans were saying "if only we had an offense like the White Sox". The Twins are just playing excellent baseball right now, and capitalizing on every chance they get. The White Sox can't play worse if they tried. When Jason Tyner resembles Rod Carew at the plate, things are going well for your team. But Jason Tyner can't resemble Rod Carew for the rest of the season now can he. The Twins are getting a lot of the breaks right now. There are still question marks over their offense right now, but they're the team I am most worried about. But the Sox need to focus on themselves and get themselves out of this slump. Eventually and hopefully, the breaks will start to go our way again.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:36 PM) Actually, now that the sox got MacDougal, a Heilman and Humber deal sounds very good. Heilman can go in long relief instead of 8th inning set up. And Heilman could go into the rotation at some point. Having guys who can go multiple innings rather than strictly one inning guys helps keep the bullpen rested and ready. There was a rumor going around yesterday that the Mariners were close to doing a Heilman for Meche deal. Don't know who would have backed out of that one (I assume Seattle), but Meche's performance last night will have hardly improved his trade value. The Mets also think that Miguel Batista won't be traded. So if they won't go for Zito, they only have a few options really, Kip Wells, Tony Armas Jr., Livan Hernandez and Freddy Garcia. Heilman makes sense, because next season he could actually join the rotation if you wanted to deal Vazquez to an NL team on the East Coast. And he would pitch in long - relief and setup situations.

Sox get Mike MacDougal for Tyler Lumsden and Daniel Cortes

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:27 PM) AHAHAHA!! How hard do you think Jon Daniels laughed at that one? Wow, how can you ask for both Danks and, AND Diamond for basically a project in MacDougal? The Royals must REALLY like Lumsden. So value wise, we may have done ok after all. -
I saw this piece in the Fort Worth Star Telegram; Would the Sox do Frankie Francisco or someone like Joaquin Arias (SS in AAA) and Danks for Garcia though, if they couldn't get a Humber and Heilman deal from the Mets?

Wow, after looking at this, looks like we did fairly well; -
So Alomar has only played in 1 game for the Sox this season and people are already calling him a downgrade on Widger? GMAB.
-
I don't mind the reasoning with keeping Carter in rookie ball. Hopefully when he starts next season at Kanny, he'll do much a better job than he did the 1st time around. Looking forward to see how McCullough does at Kanny as well.

On Zigic Soxfan1, I couldn't see him going to team that has just been relegated to the CCC in Birmingham City, instead of a Premier League Side like Portsmouth. West Ham were very close to signing him during the mid - season transfer window actually but we ended up with Dean Ashton. Needless to say I'm happy with that decision.

Here's what Aaron Gleeman posted about Garza when they took him;

Flash do yourself a favor and don't look at this thread.

C'mon Juan, this could be so huge right here.

I miss summer. I'd love to be back in Arizona right now. Oh well maybe next year.

Well at least Detroit ended up losing to Cleveland tonight. And we've got most of our heart of the lineup coming up against Nathan.
-
A wild pitch would be nice.

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 12:20 AM) If Vazquez keeps losing games for the Sox, then the bullpen won't be needed anyway. Vaz isn't the only problem on this team, but when he starts you might want to pencil in a loss. Of Javier's last 9 starts (when his ERA has gone up), we've won 5 and lost 4, so I wouldn't pencil in a loss so quickly. My point on the bullpen was that if you rely on them to pitch 4 innings, with the way they have pitched this season, you are probably going to use 3 to 4 guys at least. Then you can't really use those guys the next day. Frankly Coop needs to sit down with Javy and let him know about this 5 inning garbage. Last season it was the opposite for him, he was a bad starter but then settled down into games well. It's all mental with him, and he's got to learn, you can't make mistakes and leave the ball (especially that curveball) up in the zone in crucial situations.

QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 12:16 AM) What about acquiring Pierre to play Center and lead off the rest of the season? CF Pierre LF Soriano DH THome 1B Konerko RF Dye 2B Iguchi C Pierzynski 3B Crede SS Uribe Hopefully after those moves we weould still have BA as a defensive replacement for Piere late in the game BA's been one of our best hitters over the past month. Having Pierre in CF is a downgrade on defense, and our farm system would be BARE considering the prospects you'd have to give up to acquire both Soriano AND Pierre. Let's just say there was a discussion about Juan in the off-season about the merits of acquiring him and he wasn't too popular around these parts (Jeckle the floor is yours).

QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 12:02 AM) What does leaving him in for his inevitable big inning in crucial games against divisional/wildcard rivals do to the Sox' playoff chances? You've got to have faith that he'll eventually get it straightened out. You can't just pull Vazquez after pitching 5 scoreless innings. It ruins his confidence, and you use your bullpen more, which could tire them out, for when you really need them. Jon Garland had this exact same problem in 2004. He got it straightened out eventually, and we've all seen what he can do when he's on. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 12:03 AM) Live by the high fastball, die by the high fastball. It's amazing he only gave up one homer last season throwing so many high fastballs. It would probably help Cotts lengthen his career if he can start developing a 2nd and 3rd pitch. Probably because last season he sort of burst onto the scene a bit, by getting the control aspect of his pitching right. That fastball isn't going to blow hitters away but it's deceptive. But now that hitters have seen it a few times, that know what's coming, and it can be hittable. He's still a very good set-up pitcher, but like you said, maybe get him to work more on his off - speed stuff this off-season.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 11:51 PM) i hate that dude. Maybe he'll make all the players get really bad comeovers and change there colors to gold. And Miss Universe will move into the rotation for Kerry Wood. That Bill dude could be the new G.M. The possibilites are endless really.
