QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:58 AM) There's a definite politically incorrect response to make here. Just saying. Jacque Chirac on Greasywheels121's statement; (from the Bush cartoon) "He destroyed the Trans - Atlantic Alliance!"

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:57 AM) Good point. Davis was .257 and Borchard was also under .300 I know Maggs and Lee's production can't be replaced, but like I said in another thread last night, this lineup is now deeper and there shouldn't be any major holes in it. That's how the Twinkies won this division over the past few seasons (besides their great pitching).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:53 AM) Willie .343 Uribe .327 One or the other will be playing almost everyday, so that seems a wash. The difference for Harris is that even if he got on base, he didn't get into scoring position enough because he couldn't steal enough bases, Iguchi and Podsednik should help solve that problem this season. Plus Harris was woefully inconsistent from day to day. Uribe will be interesting to watch, hopefully he doesn't have a second year slump from hitting at the Cell, but I think he's good enough to keep producing if he keeps hitting the ball to all areas of the ballpark.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) Compare our combined starting RF to Dye, not just Magglio. Compare our combined starting C to AJ, not just Burke. Then you might have a more accurate snapshot. Borchard and Valentin definitely had sub .300 OBP's, and IIRC Crede might of had too. The Sox shouldn't have 1 player in their lineup this season who will have a sub .300 OBP, otherwise he won't be playing.

Maggs real health status from him and his agent

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:50 AM) Especially when you figure that for a whole lot less money up front, they could have had Carlos Beltran who would have looked real good in that giagantic CF of Comerica Park. Remember $34 million of his deal is deferred, so he is actually making less money during his 7 year deal than Maggs would. http://mets.mostvaluablenetwork.com/index.php?p=195 Imagine if Houston would have resigned him for about the $100 million that they offered. Would have looked like a huge steal compared to what Maggs is getting now. -

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:40 AM) ANd if Mags puts up numbers like he has in the past.. who is the dumb one? .265 at Comerica with 1 HR in 135 Ab's...................................... -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:46 AM) That is pretty much what I was thinking.... I am sure that 31,000 people don't think it was that beneficial. I know. Tell that to those victims who lost family members, who are trying to rebuild their lives and the community they live in over there.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 02:43 AM) I am not quite sure what to make of this, but according to the author the tsunami has been good economically for Sri Lanka http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/a...my_050208034722 How you can put a positive spin on the effects of this tsunami is literally quite insane.

We'll have more baserunners at the top of the order I'd say, Podsednik and Iguchi will be an upgrade over Harris and Uribe in that regard. And they'll actually be able to steal some bases too. You can subtract Maggs' OBP since he's moving teams to a pitcher's parks, and upgrade Dye's a little, while Burke didn't hit everyday, and A.J's OBP will definitely increase moving from SBC Park. There was a stat from HardballTimes IIRC, that the Sox had the best % of bringing in a RISP, but they had the worst percentage of getting that runner into scoring position, or something like that (someone may want to clear that up).

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:59 AM) Oh, I thought this was going to be about their wine, chocolate, overall cuisine, beautiful pastoral countrysides, amazing southern beaches. Dang. Not going into detail about the frog legs or snails?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:58 AM) I was shocked how much other stuff there was besides the $350 million. I was also trying to find a total for all of the military equiptment that we using as relief aid also... I remember reading that one of the choppers we have down there costs $4000 per hour just to operate. Gotta agree with you there, well for all of the big countries anyways. I still couldn't find anythin on original donations though (although I didn't look very hard).

Got a total figure on that Southsider?

Personally I like picture A better, but the 2 fat dudes aren't really adding much I gotta say.

QUOTE(winodj @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:30 AM) I'd disagree that it was just one man. But its nice to see at least the announcement of a cease fire. Let's hope it will last beyond the first Hamas bombing. And from reading the article above, Hamas hasn't exactly taken to the news like a house on fire.

Maggs real health status from him and his agent

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:27 AM) Is Bruce Levine reporting this. The same Bruce Levine who just last week said the 5 year offer Detroit made to Magglio was BS? What matters is if he's ready to play when the season starts, not what his status is right at this moment. The White Sox weren't wrong in letting him go. If you look at it, his status is about the same as Frank Thomas, who is owed an $8 million salary + a $3.5 million buyout for a total of $11.5 million, and I'm sure he's not cleared for any baseball activity right now. Frank's foot/ankle has to be as big of concern for the White Sox as Magglio's knee is for Detroit. The only thing is, Maggs has an incentive to play thru the pain this season, in order to guarantee his future. With Frank, it could be his last season here, and I don't think at his age, he'd want to rush back from injury to jeopardise his future. -

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:01 AM) $75 million sight unseen. Mike Illitch has just passed Tom Hicks for the dumbest SOB to own a baseball team. When I read that Dave Dombrowski wasn't really in favor of the deal as much as Illich (read Phil Rogers latest column), that said it all for me. Detroit didn't even have to overpay, but they just couldn't wait. -
QUOTE(mreye @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) I'll be happy when Dish Network gets it. I'll be happy when I can watch more than 2 Sox games a season.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 12:54 AM) Bulls***. In a really devastating disaster, we better be "bailed out" by our allies. I know this much, if it Australia that was on the receiveing end of that tsunami, we'd be there. And it wouldn't have hurt Australia to offer to help when Florida was raked over the coals. I know you would have, that's why the American - Australian Alliance is so important to us, even if the majority of the general public down here do not agree with some of the views. Australia could have offered relief to Florida anyway, although I didn't hear anything about it, and there probably wasn't any stories on it anyway. But we alone pledged $1 billion in relief just to Indonesia, and we don't have the best realtions with them, even though they are improving slowly.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 12:49 AM) And if you want to focus on one situation at one moment in time, you can make anyone look bad. How much did the Aussies send for the US hurricane's relief? I'm not going to hold that against the Aussies. That's a national disaster, plain and simple. The Tsunami Devastation was a global disaster, one of the worst of our time. America wouldn't want to be bailed out by other countries, even if they were its allies.
-
I know there were extenuating circumstances for the original amount that they donated, all I'm saying that compared to other countries' donations, America looked a bit stingy (in the eyes of others) for the amount of money they contributed, when you consider how much money they put everyday into Iraq.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 9, 2005 -> 12:18 AM) And the US leads the world in giving as a country. Even as only 5% of the earths population, they lead the world in money given to charity. The US is always the first to respond to disaster, and rebuild countries after wars and famine. No offense, but what was the original donation America made to the countries affected by the Tsunami Disaster FWIW?
