A FRENCH prisoner serving 30 years for murder and cannibalism is under psychiatric evaluation after killing another detainee and trying to eat his brain. The 36-year-old inmate, who was not named, had to be overpowered by eight people to stop him gorging on his victim, according to the head of the Federal Autonomous Pentitentiary Union, Frederic Grandcolas. The attack happened in the prison of Saint-Maur, central France, last Sunday. The prisoner, jailed in 2000 for his horrific crimes three years earlier, burst out of his cell as dinner was being handed out and attacked guards and convicts serving the meal with an ashtray. After smashing the skull of one of the convicts, he started eating the brain before being hauled away and taken to a psychiatric institution nearby. During subsequent questioning by police, he said "he heard voices telling him he was going to be attacked during the meal, but he says he doesn't remember anything of what he did," according to a local state prosecutor, Stephanie Forax. Mr Grandcolas said he understood that the prisoner would not be put back in the general penitentiary population after the mental evaluation was over. Several staff at the Saint-Maur jail had to receive counselling after the incident.

Bad news bout Frank, from the Daily Southtown, Frank Thomas has seen "the pictures." "It's not pretty," the White Sox slugger said Thursday of the X-rays of his left ankle. "There's all kind of (stuff) in there." That's why in all likelihood the 36-year-old veteran will opt for surgery on the ankle as soon as possible, with the hope of getting back on the field in four to six weeks. "The problem is it's my left ankle," Thomas said. "That (ankle) is my livelihood. That's where all the power (on the swing) comes from, and then running." Thomas hurt the ankle in a June 17 game at Florida and re-aggravated it last week in Minnesota. The ankle is inflamed and the X-rays revealed the presence of bone chips. The Sox are expected to make an official announcement at some point today. The delay is to see if a cortisone shot given to Thomas on Wednesday will mask the pain enough for him to play through the injury. If the limping around he was doing Thursday was any indication whether the shot was working or not, then the Sox should be expecting to hear some bad news this afternoon. That's why the organization announced just before Thursday's game with Anaheim that outfielder Magglio Ordonez had been activated from the 15-day disabled list. The four-time All-Star had been on the DL since June 4 and had left knee surgery to repair a small tear on June 5. Ordonez was not in the starting lineup Thursday, but because of the Thomas injury, he will be forced into action as the designated hitter this weekend against Seattle. The original plan was to let Ordonez get at-bats in the minor leagues and then join the team in Oakland immediately after the All-Star break. "He (was) going to play this weekend in the minor leagues, so what's the difference?" Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said of Ordonez. "If he's going to be 0-for-7 there, then he can be 0-for-7 here. I will take that chance if he plays DH." Ordonez ran sprints with the team Wednesday and said Thursday he felt no pain from that session. He has yet to slide, however, or test the knee in the outfield, but that is why he'll be relegated to the DH role. "He's running much better now and feeling much better now," head trainer Herm Schneider said of Ordonez. "He's within that four-to-six (week) window that he's safe going out there." To make room for Ordonez, the Sox sent pitcher Felix Diaz to Triple-A Charlotte. If Thomas is placed on the DL today, another move likely will be made. The Sox were 18-19 without Ordonez in the starting lineup. The team obviously missed his production — .311 average, eight home runs and 34 RBI in the 42 games he played. But now if they lose Thomas, the Sox will be without another top producer. Thomas is batting .271 with 18 homers and 49 RBI, and he leads the American League with a .434 on-base percentage. Losing another big bat is the last thing the Sox need. Until they broke out for a 9-8 win Thursday over Anaheim, the team had lost five straight games, during which they batted just .160 and scored a total of nine runs. If Thomas chooses not to have surgery at this time, he would still likely need it after the season. "It has the potential to bother him the rest of the year," Schneider said of the injury. "He's got some garbage in his ankle and it's there. We can calm down the inflammation and he can deal with it or he can't. "If he gets (the surgery), it would be now or after the season. That's all to be determined."

Can anyone say Jim McIlvane?
-
Absolutely, so he should have been. I haven't seen Raffy around much lately either, hopefully everything is going well with him in Brazil.
-
What was that movie where the guy went to play baseball in Japan? Mr. Perfect or sumthin I think.
-
Yeah it is pretty big, especially when our players are doing well. In the late 90's Pat Rafter won a few U.S Open's and that got things going, now with Hewitt and Phillipousis it's getting bigger and bigger.
-
If we had the draft all over again, is everyone happy with Donny Lucy, or should we have taken Kurt Suzuki instead?

They wanna put that kind of a curfew in effect down here now, for all P platers (b/w 18 and 21) you can't drive after 10 p.m. Frankly I think it's stupid, because I work a lot of shifts till midnight, and I'd hav no other way to get home. THey're also discussing the passenger curfews as well. Oh yes, back to the topic, I saw Maggs on the TV, looked in good spirits, it'll be good to have him back in the lineup, so we don't hav the likes of Ross Gload DH'ing no more. :puke

BUMP, Good to see O' Grady win the stage today, I think him and McEwen are good chances to win the green jersey. Not good news for Brad McGee, found this article on him, McGee may miss Athens

And just think when Munoz was pitching with the Barons, he was probably our best pitching prospect. How things can change so quickly. His next few starts are absolutely crucial, with the likes of Rauch and Diaz rejoining the rotation in Charlotte, I wouldn't rule out them sending Munoz back down to B-Ham if things get even worse.

Gotta say after watching today's game, Timo didn't hav the best game only going 1 for 5, I'll take the clutch hit though (Take note Joe Crede). Paul Konerko with 4 hits, hitting over .400 in the last 2 weeks the Angels Broadcasters said I believe. Let's see if A-Row can get something going in the #2 hole for a lil while as well, at least until Uribe gets his stroke back.

Hope u hav a good 1 CWsox! Happy Happy B-Day!

I suppose if there's been a silver lining with Maggs injury, it's been the play of Timo Perez. He was getting crucified on this board a month ago, lots of ppl round here wanted Borch up ASAP, "why did we give up matt ginter for this guy?" etc etc. It's clutch hitting like that, that will determine where this team goes, if he can pinch hit, and do it well, that will be HUGE for this ballclub. I think he's definitely earned the right to be the 4th outfielder at least when Maggs starts playing.
