Thomas goin down...

Featured Replies

well, with maggs coming back and thomas going down timo has earned his spot as the DH, his offense is turnin it around and I hope ozzie thinks the same way I do, were gonna miss thomas dearly, cause since 90 when he was an everyday man in our lineup our offense surges when he is hot and fails when he is not (perfect example in this month of July since he hurt his ankle)....who do you guys think we should have in that DH spot?

IF Thomas undergoes surgery, then Steve Finley goes from "gee, wouldn't it be nice to acquire his LH power stick and experience".......all the way to "oh s***, we better get him because our offense is f***ed".

I am not suggesting Finley can replace Frank's bat by himself. So a DH (or even a LF/RF since Lee/Maggs could always be moved to DH) needs to be acquired as well.

I just read that they're gonna DH Ordonez, at least for awhile. I'm fine with Timo in RF and Rowand in CF. I especially like Timo's left handed bat in the line up. Plus he can lead off. There's also a chance Borchard may be call up. That would be cool too. I'd like to see how much, if any, he's improved. Gives us a real good arm in RF until Maggs is ready to get back in the field.

CARL EVERETT! Let's get him he'll help us.

Its time for Joe Borchard.

Its time for Joe Borchard.

i second that one

Its time for Joe Borchard.

If they do not bring him up now he will not be with the team come the trade deadline.

If Thomas indded goes on the DL as it appears he's gotta come up. It'll give us an actual power threat in the DH spot. Burke is adequate as a backup catcher, but shouldnt be relied upon to play any significant ammount of time at DH. Gload is also decent but i wouldnt want him at DH every day either.

I would put Borchard in RF, and have Maggs DH for a while, until the knee is 100%. 2 dropped balls in a week should keep Gload from ever playing RF again, unless a game is out of hand.

ya, imeant using Gload as a DH. He's been semi-reliable at the plate this year, at least for a backup guy

I wouldn't mind Gload as DH. Left-handed stick who makes contact and WONT play the field..

Man we just cant catch a break. Maggs goes down, Frank helps carry the load of offense. Now Frank goes down and it's Maggs turn to lift the offense.

if its any condolence, Maggs for Frank is an upgrade.

He has been, but I think extended playing time would cause him to go in a tailspin.

from chisox.com

"Coming soon? With Frank Thomas apparently destined for a trip to the disabled list and the White Sox set with 11 pitchers before the All-Star break, a Joe Borchard callup could be on the horizon this weekend. The South Siders held on to the talented 25-year-old in a recent trade with Seattle for Freddy Garcia, and the switch-hitting centerfielder is paying big minor league dividends.

Borchard knocked out his 16th home run and 19th double during Triple-A Charlotte's 4-0 victory over Buffalo on Wednesday. Borchard has 48 RBIs and could be an added boost for the team's recently sagging offense. "

this is what my line ups would look like while frank is on DL and maggs is building strength

Harris - 2B

Lee - LF

Maggs - DH

Kong - 1B

Jose V - SS

Rowand - CF

Borchard - RF

Crede - 3B

Sandy / Burke / Davis - C

Rowand - CF

Lee - LF

Maggs - DH

Kong - 1B

Jose V - SS

Uribe - 2B

Borchard - RF

Sandy / Burke / Davis - C

Sorry Sonix but I disagree...

Losing Franks OBP is going to hurt us alot more.

Frank is more valuable because he sees alot more pitches...

Frank is the White Sox and I just hope that he isn't out very long at all...

Dammit, just what we need. Frank better not be gone long or we are f***ed.

. 2 dropped balls in a week should keep Gload from ever playing RF again, unless a game is out of hand.

No, 2 dropped balls AND at least 2 misplayed line-drives (including Hollansworth's "triple") AND failing to take charge on a crucial Uribe drop.....in a week should keep Gload from ever playing RF again, unless Sox re-acquire Brian Daubach and it comes down to two of them.

And in retrospect, I don't mind that 2nd drop in Wrigley as much as I do his other f***-ups - the Cubbie baserunner was standing on 2nd with NO outs, which means even if Gload catches the ball on the warning track in RF, the runner tags up and moves to 3rd with 1 out. I think the next Cub batter either hit a deep FO or singled, which would have scored the guy from 3rd anyway. I don't think Cubs scored another run that inning, so Gload can't be charged with losing the game - as was the case at USCF.

not that i want either out, but i'd rather have Maggs at this point. He hits for a much higher average now and frankly, the past 3 years he's been better. if anything it's a push, but in my mind Magglio is at LEAST as good/valuable as Frank right now

Bad news bout Frank, from the Daily Southtown,

Frank Thomas has seen "the pictures."

"It's not pretty," the White Sox slugger said Thursday of the X-rays of his left ankle. "There's all kind of (stuff) in there."

That's why in all likelihood the 36-year-old veteran will opt for surgery on the ankle as soon as possible, with the hope of getting back on the field in four to six weeks.

"The problem is it's my left ankle," Thomas said. "That (ankle) is my livelihood. That's where all the power (on the swing) comes from, and then running."

Thomas hurt the ankle in a June 17 game at Florida and re-aggravated it last week in Minnesota. The ankle is inflamed and the X-rays revealed the presence of bone chips.

The Sox are expected to make an official announcement at some point today. The delay is to see if a cortisone shot given to Thomas on Wednesday will mask the pain enough for him to play through the injury.

If the limping around he was doing Thursday was any indication whether the shot was working or not, then the Sox should be expecting to hear some bad news this afternoon.

That's why the organization announced just before Thursday's game with Anaheim that outfielder Magglio Ordonez had been activated from the 15-day disabled list. The four-time All-Star had been on the DL since June 4 and had left knee surgery to repair a small tear on June 5.

Ordonez was not in the starting lineup Thursday, but because of the Thomas injury, he will be forced into action as the designated hitter this weekend against Seattle. The original plan was to let Ordonez get at-bats in the minor leagues and then join the team in Oakland immediately after the All-Star break.

"He (was) going to play this weekend in the minor leagues, so what's the difference?" Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said of Ordonez. "If he's going to be 0-for-7 there, then he can be 0-for-7 here. I will take that chance if he plays DH."

Ordonez ran sprints with the team Wednesday and said Thursday he felt no pain from that session. He has yet to slide, however, or test the knee in the outfield, but that is why he'll be relegated to the DH role.

"He's running much better now and feeling much better now," head trainer Herm Schneider said of Ordonez. "He's within that four-to-six (week) window that he's safe going out there."

To make room for Ordonez, the Sox sent pitcher Felix Diaz to Triple-A Charlotte. If Thomas is placed on the DL today, another move likely will be made.

The Sox were 18-19 without Ordonez in the starting lineup. The team obviously missed his production — .311 average, eight home runs and 34 RBI in the 42 games he played.

But now if they lose Thomas, the Sox will be without another top producer. Thomas is batting .271 with 18 homers and 49 RBI, and he leads the American League with a .434 on-base percentage.

Losing another big bat is the last thing the Sox need. Until they broke out for a 9-8 win Thursday over Anaheim, the team had lost five straight games, during which they batted just .160 and scored a total of nine runs.

If Thomas chooses not to have surgery at this time, he would still likely need it after the season.

"It has the potential to bother him the rest of the year," Schneider said of the injury. "He's got some garbage in his ankle and it's there. We can calm down the inflammation and he can deal with it or he can't.

"If he gets (the surgery), it would be now or after the season. That's all to be determined."

Can anyone say Light Tower Power?

Right now I am in favor of calling up Joe B if Frank goes on the DL, and DHing Maggs with Joe patrolling LF, until we know that knee of Maggs is OK.

I agree, but I'd put Joey B in RF.

IMO, Frank's "injury" is being overstated.

yeah RF :)

The Sox are overstating it, or Frank is being a sissy?
