QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:26 PM) You and me both man. That would make it a coup Not happening but I would be head over heels if it was Owens. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:24 PM) I'd much rather have Garcia than Olt. Maybe, but the Cubs got CJ Edwards also. Owens, Renaudo, Barnes, or Brian Johnson better be in the deal. -

Any chance Iglesias is on his way to Detroit and we end up with Bradley, Renaudo, and Garcia? -
According to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun the Orioles are out on Peavy and covet Bud Norris and Sale. One in the hand is worth two in the bush, so to me the conversation starts with Bundy AND Gausman plus 2 to 3 lottery ticket prospects. Thoughts?

Jacobs with a homer for bham. It would be great to see that slg% come up.
-
Jeff Passan throws cold water on everyone, says deal not close, just talks.
-
Brandon Jacobs with another decent day at the plate. Great avg. and OBP so far, but only 1 extra basehit. Perplexing for a guy advertised to have power.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 26, 2013 -> 07:16 PM) MLBInsidersLive says Cardinals willing 2 offer Adams,Butler,Blazek to WhiteSox 4 Peavy,Ramirez. Saw that, wreaks of fake account with the sheer amount of info on a trade no one else is chirping about, plus not verified. Anyone know if it's real? -
White Sox sign Micker Zapata for $1.6 million

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 05:27 PM) @BristolSox 5h New @whitesox signee Micker Adolpho Zapata takes a round of BP in Bluefield pic.twitter.com/zTtdBkg8iA Does this mean he's skipping DSL, or are the player development people just getting a closer look? -
I think the takeaway is Phegley needs to establish himself as the guy because there isn't a lot that is a year or two away in the minors to write home about. The next wave that may emerge in my mind are Gonzalez, Ayala, and Pizzoli. The rest just seem to be guys filling a milb roster.

I am at work so I can't watch the video, but there are 4 things that stand out in my mind from my memory of that fight: 1. We learned Magglio was a kicker. Strangely enough that's something that tells you a lot about a person. Especially considering this was before MMA became popular. 2. Foulke after that fight looking like he got stomped in the face. 3. Fick receiving the beer shower. If I remember correctly he was flipping the fans the bird as it was happening. 4. Frank Robinson using this fight to show that he was the new sheriff in town and handing out crazy suspensions.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 07:36 PM) Toby Thomas, 21st round pick this year, still only a 19 years old SS, is having quite a start to his pro ball career. 5 K's in 70 PA's is also very encouraging for this system. He's an interesting story, put up great numbers as a SP in high school and JUCO splitting time at SS. Was recruited by a lot of big schools but chose JUCO, with speculation that the reason was the fact that Pensacola State could offer a full ride, which most Division I schools won't offer. That coupled with the rule that JUCO players, as we know, can be drafted after their Freshman year, as opposed to their Junior year in DI.

Jake Sanchez with a great start today. A bit old for the level, and played in Joliet last year, but you have to at least smile at 30 K and 4 BB in 28 ip.
-
Joe Borchard, the gift that keeps on giving.

22 OF ranked #11 in the Red Sox system, one of the better systems in baseball, coming into the 2013 season. Former 10th rounder in the 2009 draft, was playing for the Portland Seadogs, the Red Sox AA affiliate before the trade. Anyone have any inside scout details on him?

Andrew Mitchell is having a pretty good start thus far. Walks could use reducing, but 1 hit, albeit a homer, through 4 is pretty good.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 10, 2013 -> 09:07 PM) Caulfield is seriously starting to run with his shtick. He never seizes to amaze me. Or ceases for that matter.
-
I'm most happy that they resisted the temptation to allow Jared Mitchell to remain in the top 25 strictly because of his athleticism and high draft pick. He's a bust, it's fare to say at this point.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) Just curious... what do you know about Luis Arteaga? Hadn't really heard anything about him before. Not a lot, all stat based thoughts really for him. I liked him more last year than this year, but he still seems like one to keep an eye on. What I liked specifically in 2012 was a 17 yr old with a good FIP (3.31), average k/9 (6.51), good WHIP (1.18) and above average BB/9 (2.65). BABIP tells you he may have been a bit lucky, but it's not way out of wack at .278. His numbers have regressed a bit in 2013, though with a smaller sample size. Granted these are DSL numbers, which tend to slant towards pitchers, but he's done it as a young pitcher as opposed to a 20/21 yr old dominating 17 year olds.

I'd also probably have a final tier of players on the watch list for potential to crash the party, a la Micah Johnson. For that tier I would place guys like: Adam Engel Nick Basto Sammy Ayala Luis Arteaga Brandon Brennan Jason Coats Roger Ramos Kevin Vance Braulio Ortiz Jose Bautista Daniel Gonzalez

I was all set to post that Hawkins has done much better as of late, how his k rate has come down, and his wOBA and OPS were a lot higher over his last 10. I was all set to say maybe he's starting to get back to the super prospect we were all thinking we had last year. Then I checked the scores for tonight. And then I saw Hawkins going 0 for 4, with 4 k's. 4 strikeouts in a night where the rest of his team had 16 hits no less. Before we all go off the deep end though, it's important to remember that Hawkins is a year removed from high school, with crazy flashes of brilliance, and crazy inconsistency, as you would expect from someone that age that isn't named Trout or Harper. Patience, my friends, patience. Courtney Hawkins isn't Trout, Harper, or Griffey Jr. for that matter, but he still has an excellent chance of developing into a phenomenal player after years of polishing in the minors. Here are my thoughts on our prospects not in order, but placed in tiers. Potential Future Stars: Courtney Hawkins Keon Barnum Tim Anderson Trayce Thompson Josh Phegley (Only if he stays a catcher) Potential Future Average to Above Average MLers: Andre Rienzo Erik Johnson Micah Johnson Andrew Mitchell Tyler Danish Jacob May Carlos Sanchez Potential Future Role Players/Back of the Rotation/Middle Relievers: Joey DeMichele Myles Jaye Keenyn Walker Scott Snodgress Jake Petricka Marcus Semien Daniel Webb Kyle Hansen Christopher Beck Adam Lopez Complete Wild Cards (Boom or Bust): Micker Zapata Luis Castillo Hanleth Otano Trey Michalczewski

White Sox promote Phegley from Charlotte, DFA Gimenez. Finally a reason to watch.
-
Phegley with a homer.
-
Braulio Ortiz roughed up pretty badly.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) Why don't you do some research before you question me on this. I don't come on this site and just spout off nonsense. Nor am I a Cubs fan. Even with their 2nd largest bonus pool, they could not sign all of the guys that they wanted. They traded for more bonus pool money. It is something that not many other teams did. That is how they found loopholes and exploited the market. I would have liked it if the Sox did something like this. Winning international signing day is not necessarily as great thing as one might expect. Here are the top Int'l signing bonuses from '08, none of these guys are lighting the world on fire to my knowledge: 1 P Michel Inoa A's Dominican Republic $4.25M 2 OF Rafael Rodriguez Giants Dominican Republic $2.55M 3 OF Yorman Rodriguez Reds Venezuela $2.5M 4 P Adys Portillo Padres Venezuela $2.0M 5 OF Luis Domoromo Padres Venezuela $1.25M 6t 3B Roberto De La Cruz Cardinals Dominican Republic $1.1M 6t OF Julio Morban Mariners Dominican Republic $1.1M 8 SS Alvaro Aristy Padres Dominican Republic $1.0M 9 SS Gian Carlos Arias Yankees Dominican Republic $950,000 10 OF Ramon Flores Yankees Venezuela $775,000 2007 has a few recognizable names, but the overall story is about the same: Kelvin De Leon OF $1,100,000 2007 D.R. Young Il-Jung RHP $1,000,000 2007 Korea Julio Teheran RHP $850,000 2007 Colombia Martin Perez LHP $580,000 2007 Venezuela Jefry Marte 3B $550,000 2007 D.R. Dae-Eun Rhee RHP $525,000 2007 Korea Cesar Puello OF $400,000 2007 D.R. Rymer Liriano OF $300,000 2007 D.R. Esmailin Caridad RHP $175,000 2007 D.R. Tomas Telis C $130,000 2007 Venezuela Point is, international signing is a must, but unless someone is an off the charts talent, they odds are they will most likely never see a MLB ball field. They are much more of a crap shoot than the American draft. It is better to go for bulk and see what sticks in my opinion then place all your eggs in one basket like both Chicago teams have done.
