  1. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 01:28 AM) As it stands, Porcello>Pordea. However, if it were that simple, he would probably be a Royal right now. Just remember, 20+ teams passed on Porcello just like the Sox did. Sure it would have been nice to see the Sox take a bold move, but 20 some odd teams made the exact same choice the Sox did. Whatever reason you may feel justifies our decision to select Poreda instead of Porcello, the fact remains a divisonal rival selected the second overall rated pitcher. A team already full of projectable arms with another (Miller) ready to replace Robertson in the rotation. It's past the time of reasoning. Phrases such as "29 other teams would want a (insert pitcher)" too are no longer valid. Whether that be in regards to our draft selections or the money alloted to international scouting. If we don't find a legitimate ace within the forseeable future to combat those of other teams it's not going to be a good 4-5 years. Why else were our first five selections pitchers other than Williams and company saying to themselves, "oh s***, we somehow have to match Verlander/Miller/Porcello/Bonderman." If the White Sox feel selecting a college lefthander with medicore numbers and one pitch because of signability exceeds the need to revive a stagnant farm system with a pitcher drawing comparisons to Verlander, all because he commands 9+million, then it freightens me to think how they will compete in the international market.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) So, who projects to be @ the top of next year's draft? From what I recall, Vanderbilt's third baseman Pedro Alvarez will be somewhere in the discussion. I'm sure daa84 could provide more on him.
  3. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:32 AM) he better have an off-the-chart GB/FB ratio if they expect a guy with his college strikeout rate to succeed in the majors. Surrendering 7 HRs in 99 collegiate innings isn't a very good indication of that. Maybe we'll teach him how to throw something besides a fastball like we have Sisco and Thornton.
  4. Hopefully he'll reach the big leagues in several years as a front-line starter with several quality secondary pitches.
  5. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 10:37 PM) White Sox have been outscored 89-44 in their last 14 games, going 3-11. They weren't a good team before then, maybe you could say they were mediocre. After this stretch, I don't know how anyone can claim this is anything but a BAD team. I truly believe the worst-case scenario these next few weeks would be for the White Sox to perform well against the National League, and perhaps give management the illusion this team has turned itself around. Then there's the possibility Williams resists trading Buehrle or anyone else.
  6. I believe I got it right this time, unless there's a fifth game I'm unaware of.
  7. Is that our future All-Star swinging and missing terribly at three fastballs?
  8. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) Is it me, or did Gonzalez just not catch that on the fly? Looks like he played the short hop, even though he should have caught it normally. It looks much cooler catching the ball on a bounce.
  9. May as well bring up MacDougal and Aardsma. Hike up their value for a trade nextseason if nothing else.
  10. That's hilarious watching eveyone leave. I would have left the minute Bukvich entered the game. Please, idiots, don't run onto the field. I don't want to have to read about it in the Tribune tomorrow.
  11. Now it appears only one dependable reliever remains in our bullpen. Yet, it's going to be Bukvich time here. Where's Jenks?
  12. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:37 PM) Thornton is taking the Damaso Marte career arc with us. Watching Marte, Cotts, Politte, Hermanson and now Thornton and MacDougal, I've come to the conclusion if a White Sox bullpen arm has a good year -- trade them immediately. I've said in the past I support trading Jenks because of his velocity drop, and the fact we're likely not competing for several seasons. Thornton or MacDougal would obviously be the prefered choice, but they'll need to become more consistent from this point forward. If none of those names are likely to be moved, then hope Logan finishes the season well and think about packaging him.
  13. Typical evening for our starters. Good outing through 6-7 innings, a few runners are on once they depart, then the bullpen comes in and lets the inherited runners score.
  14. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:29 PM) Man am I glad we drafted some big time hitters today. No, we drafted Matt Thornton redux.
  15. Bad bunts from other teams always have a way of finding an open space where no one can catch it.
  16. If Fields would have advanced the runners, at the minimum, we'd be looking at a 2-1 lead. One positive, if you can call it that, is he didn't hit into a DP.
  17. Fields missing a fastball down the middle with 2 on, 0 outs? Bad. Real bad. All-star he is not, right now.
  18. If the Yankees win, and Detroit continues its ass-raping of Texas, we're looking at 9 out of the division and 6.5 out of the wild card lead with six teams to jump. Delightful. Goodbye, Buehrle. Dye -- the least you could do is get on a hot streak and drive up your value. Otherwise, hit well so you can bring this ballclub Type A compensation. We'll need every additional draft pick for next season.
  19. What the hell was Fields doing bunting? We didn't bring him up to bunt. And concerning our selection of pitchers with the first five picks, it proves to everyone the concern this organization has towards our future. The division has too many quality arms, and we desperately need to keep up. Porcello only highlights this "arms race," and how we're far behind the competition. For anyone wondering where the offensive prospects are, remember how many rounds the draft is. We can easily draft positional players from now until the end. I don't recall Williams saying the market for positional players was outrageous last winter, either. We'll find replacements for current players, whether it's from free agency or trade of current players.
  20. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:56 PM) analysts at the draft saying that poreda could be every bit as good as the guys to go at the top of the round. Sure he could, if he develops plus offspeed pitchers. Any pitcher has the potential to match Price if they do this, or that, but as it ism few have everything put together as he does.
  21. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:53 PM) I said it earlier and I'll repeat it. This is why Detroit will be competing for the pennant while we will be around .500 the next few years. Even when they're not receiving top 10 picks for terrible seasons they're still finding a way to draft top talent. Drafting five straight pitchers suggests to me people within the organization know we're going to be in HUUUGGGEE trouble unless quality pitchers emerge that can compete with those within the division.
  22. Minnesota hasn't drafted one pitcher thus far.
  23. This is our scouting department at work these last two picks. I haven't even heard of LeRoy Hunt.
  24. You figure the Angels have money to spend since their first pick was in the 50's. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Middlebrooks was taken by them; making it the second straight round a talent is taken before us. Not that it's guranteed we would/will take those names, but you never know. Let's hope it's different now.
  25. If they're still interested in pitchers, there's always Tanner Robbles or Julian Sampson. Although both could probably be taken in the later rounds.
