QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) We have made plenty of "safe" picks over the last few years. Its time to get a possible number 1, instead of a possible number 5. Only six more days until we find out for sure. I have an overwhelming feeling they'll screw it up. They'll pick the highest ceiling, safe pitcher imaginable. A potential #4 starter. Nick Schmidt sounds about right.

Angel Villalona. Please Sabean, let us have a turn at receiving a generous package. Crede is a veteran with World Series experience!

QUOTE(fathom @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:49 PM) His stuff is deteriorating too quickly for my tastes. His fastball, which was once 94-95 mph, is now in the 89-91 mph range. I know many here would consider it blasphemous, but I'd trade Jenks for much the same reason. Considering his past injury history, his weight, and his drop in velocity, his future status within this organization worries me. You want to talk about selling high? With someone under contract for quite a while with previous success and a (still) decent fastball/curve combination? There's no question he'll lend us quite a return. Yes, he's one of the two most dependable arms in the bullpen. The question you have to ask yourself is whether the White Sox have an opportunity to compete next season. Most wouldn't think so. So, then why waste Jenks on this team when he could help solidfy our INF or OF? Perhaps bring in a SP prospect. I'll take my chances with MacDougal, Logan, Thornton, O.Perez, Day, Aardsma, etc. Bullpens notoriously overturn themselves season to season. Good seasons may come out of nowhere (Politte/Cotts). Better to sell high, for once.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:25 PM) Let me say that KW really doesn't have a whole lot of say in the draft, so lets not kill him for the minor league system being so bad. He employs those responsible for developing players. It's his responsibility, even if it isn't directly, to find the right personnel to build up a farm system capable of competing with those within the division. Anyways, Williams IS placing himself in the draft this year. All decisions end with him. -
QUOTE(spiderman @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) I'm hear to add some sombering thoughts. Enjoy his last 20 starts with the White Sox because chances are he'll pitching for a new team next season. Hell, he could be gone in 2 months if the White Sox can't get this going. He'd bring a boat load of prospects, and Kenny is going to have to think about that if the White Sox are buried by the Indians. He should -- if pitching well -- and I won't accept any excuses to the contrary. No Gavin Floyd's. No " or "former first rounders who have yet to reach their potential." Give me legitimate prospects.

According to Guillen, Erstad received ligament damage and will likely be out several weeks.

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) The one positive of the night is MB. Great game. Hopefully all the starters follow suit. Even if they do, the offense can't be relied upon to score runs.

Even though it's tought to watch games such tonight, the loss is easier to digest when you consider this White Sox team just isn't very good. They'll be around .500 the entire season -- perhaps feed off a weak National League for June -- but it's obvious this team isn't doing anything in October. Williams failed us this season. If this style of play continues, only one course of action is necessary -- selling players. And we'll need midseason deals that obviously favor us and immediately help our minor leauge system. Get on it, Williams. You'll have a lot of work to do over the next month.

I have a book to recommend to Williams. He may want to consider reading it over the next month. -

QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:50 PM) Here would be my moves: - Trade Crede (call up Fields) - Call up BA for CF and Sweeney for LF (dump Pods) - Trade Iguchi if you can get any value Even though I doubt Iguchi or Crede would be traded, it'll have to be another month of losing games before any of that is considered. Hopefully Podsednik is cut before that point. -

QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:41 PM) But he's got horrible facial hair. I don't think people don't like Erstad. What I was more frustrated with, and many others, is that it sure didn't seem like he won the job and the amount of playing itme he got for what was supposed to be open competition in CF. I believe it's time to end the Rally Proton Accelerator. It's brought shame to this ballclub and needs to be terminated. -

What was bad about what I said earlier? I know it was sarcastic, but I wasn't showing satisfaction from his injury. -

Unless we overcome this insurmountable lead, we're going to be either 7.5 out of the division lead or 5 games out of the wild card lead with potentially five teams to jump (if Baltimore wins). -

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 31, 2007 -> 05:07 PM) Senior righthander Nevin Griffith’s first outing against senior slugger Mike Burgess got lots of national hype, and Griffith was again sharp Tuesday in a rematch with Burgess and Hillsborough High at Griffith’s Middleton High. He touched 96 mph with his fastball, and leaned heavily on a low-80s slider that has developed into a legitimate strikeout offering. “He rang the bell once again,” said a scout with an American League team that was among more than 30 scouts at the game. “I believe he even broke Burgess’ bat, and he was swinging metal. He’s got power (stuff).” He's definitely a pitcher with potential. With only two picks in the first two rounds (#25, 91), we don't have the advantage of waiting until the compensation rounds -- where Nevin is probably going to be picked. May as well go for the most projectable arm at #25. If we were willing to do something similar with Broadway and McCulloch, I don't see ANY reason not to do the same with Griffith.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) I'm going with Main right now. Judging from recent performances (he struck out 14 in a start last week), and his power arsenal, I'd be shocked if he were available at #25. If he were there, I wouldn't mind taking him either. About a month ago I wasn't too sure -- since many were concerned with his delivery and offspeed offerings -- but he's apparently molded into more of a pitcher. What's worse is Max Scherzer signing with Arizona pushes everything back one slot. That can mean everything.

QUOTE(danman31 @ May 31, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) There will still be high ceiling college pitchers with minimal question marks late first round, especially in a deep draft this year.I've been following the progress of players projected to fall within the first round/sandwich round for several months, and the true strength in this draft remains high school pitching. I know our draft philosophy recently favors college pitchers, but aside from Aaron Poreda and Nick Hagadone -- perhaps a handful of others who have come out of nowhere and escaped media attention -- there won't be many high ceiling, college pitchers available. More high schoolers with projectability will be there. Andrew Brackman stock has plummeted, but he's a Boras client. Forget about that. Jake Arrieta and Nick Schmidt will both be available, but do you associate either as high ceiling college pitchers? Or Jason Simmons? Even Poreda and Hagadone have problems with throwing secondary offerings. Since Latos is off the board, I'm pimping Nevin Griffith. Although it'll obviously serve no purpose, as we've likely had our selection in mind for several weeks. Still, if high ceiling college pitchers is the criteria -- and the various mock drafts I've seen remain true -- we're going to have to take a chance with a one-pitch pitcher.
