QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 19, 2007 -> 09:55 PM) Latos plays for Broward? He's definitely on our radar then. That's the territory of the scout (I don't know his name) who brought us Gio, and most recently two of Latos' teammates. One of those teammates was Sergio Morales. PG crosschecker listed him as one of the Top 10 draft and follow candidates from the 2006 draft. Oddly enough, a blurb you posted May 11th on SSS concerning his signing comes up as the first search result using Google. It'll definitely be Vitters. Cubs have been all over him for quite awhile. He's, without question, the most polished hitter in the draft.

About time someone took advantage of a weak breaking ball.
-
How many breaking balls has Marquis hung, four already? The offensive approach of this team has become downright pathetic. While it was discouraging before, there was atleast the glimmer of hope the lineup would collectively begin putting together quality ABs. If things don't shape up quickly, we're going to be sellers come July.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 19, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) Supposedly reported on the radio pregame. Removes him from today's game, then. Let's hope Vazquez lasts atleast 6 innings.

How would you feel about selecting Matt Latos? He is one year removed from high school (pitched for a community college; don't know immediately about the statistics), and possess a 94-98 mph fastball. I've discussed it before, as the concern with him is whether he'll accept the Padres offer as a DFE. Other problems relate to this supposed lack of maturity and competiveness, which have resulted in a drop in status. These are the type of decisions we'll have to grapple with. Recent article: EDIT: Found recent statistics: Broward Community College: 2.03 ERA 75.1IP, 102K, 58H, 17BB

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 19, 2007 -> 04:46 AM) And you would trust KW to rebuild this team? Why? Let's say they lose Buehrle and Dye as Free Agents...do you really trust KW to rebuild, when we've had so many blown first round draft picks and busts in our farm system? I don't trust anyone currently employed by the organization to successfully rebuild from within. However, I can only hope they've learn from past mistakes; such as adopting a weak draft philosophy, targeting players based upon Fall League statistics, or otherwise including players such as Floyd who resemble Coop-projects more than prospects. I take additional solace in the possibility that if a rebuilding effort is undertaken and Williams fails, he'll be fired. Regardless of 2005. He won't enter it half-assed knowing his jobs on the line. This upcoming amateur draft is very important for our future. Not only with the first selection, but more for showcasing to fans that they've finally realized safe picks don't win championships. And they certaintly don't match up against the talented prospects of divisional opponents. I don't consider drafting someone with the knowledge of one day including them in a trade as productive, either. We need to draft for our stability; not the possibility of acquiring a veteran.

QUOTE(danman31 @ May 19, 2007 -> 02:40 AM) I'd rather stay away from high school arms in the first round, but otherwise I like the idea of going for a higher ceiling guy. I have no preference either way. If our scouts, crosscheckers, etc. have a high school pitcher atop their list and he's available, we can't debate the merits of drafting young arms. Who are we to limit our field? We can't develop high school or college talent if the last decade is any indication. I'd rather go with the pitcher possessing the greatest potential; regardless of experience outside of high school. Matt Cain (2002 - 25th) Jeremy Bonderman (2001 - 26th) Chad Billingsley (2003 - 24th) Philip Hughes (2004 - 23rd) All recent high school pitchers selected around our position. If someone such as Garza (2005 - 25th) is available, then by all means hone in on them. I just hope Williams isn't restricting the available pool of talent his scouts are responsible for watching.

Baseball America's first round projection for the White Sox. While I wouldn't place much emphasis on Main (this draft is widely regarded as unpredictable beyond the Top 3), I'm THRILLED to hear of this new 'mandate.' It should have been adopted several years ago.

Don't embarrass us again, White Sox.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 18, 2007 -> 11:34 PM) In terms of in-game managing and player evaluating, I'd definitely choose Manuel over Guillen. Guillen's big advantage over Manuel was supposed to be player relations and motivation. There's been rumblings about some clubhouse issues lately.....and we have to get this AJ bulls*** to stop immediately. Inside Information.....

QUOTE(fathom @ May 18, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) Must be nice to be the Indians....they get down 4-1 in the 2nd, and three batters later, their game is tied. Andrew Miller is pitching for the Tigers, and he looks pretty good. If he can pitch well for them this year, I see no reason how they don't make the playoffs. Watching these offenses makes me so jealous. Wait a few seasons and you'll have reason to be jealous of Detroit and Clevelands pitching staffs as well.
-
According to Guillen in his post-game interview, MacDougal pitched the ball well. Was he watching a replay of yesterday's game?
-
QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 18, 2007 -> 04:30 PM) He still has crappy power numbers for a corner outfielder. So, yet another stellar White Sox prospect proves the strength of this organization is promoting players who immediately contribute.

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 18, 2007 -> 04:15 PM) Which is why I've been arguing all along we need to blow it up and rebuild sooner rather than later....before it becomes a 3-5 year project, like the Kansas City Chiefs. We may get away with this 2007 roster floundering aroud .500 through July, but these next few seasons, the different between our roster and those of divisional rivals will grow more noticeable. It's essential for our future that blue-chip prospects emerge either from within or from trade that can make pursuing expensive talent for other positions possible. The pressure should be immense on our scouting department. I don't even care if it's unrealistic, it's what essential to survive in this division.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ May 18, 2007 -> 04:12 PM) He would have been a great addition to the team....unfortunately, he's going to be a liability due to a certain idiot trying to play him at 1B. His throw to second base was atrocious. Hall simply can't windup the ball. Baseruners in the future will run all over him.
-
EMBARRASSING. Honestly, I felt embarrassed watching the game from the confines of my living room. These players should feel ashamed of themselves. Anyone who feels this team is anywhere close to contention needs to reflect on the problems which still persist -- mainly offense. Or how about a catcher that can't throw? Other teams will just run all over him. Or how about MacDougal and his inability to pitch in pressure situations? He became a completely different pitcher today.

There have already been numerous pitches just missing the strikezone. If we're down late, you can count on Hawk citing how our starters have to throw through a "tea cup."

White Sox vs. Yankees, 5/16/07 Lets Play Two!! (W), (L)

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 17, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) The Sox have 2 of the first 100 draft picks. This is not a draft to restock the farm or find an immediate impact guy. You have to begin somewhere. I'd rather they adopt new evaluation techniques (rather than focusing on "athletes" or "safe" selections) now, give perhaps a year to judge the results, then go onwards from there. I'm not expecting immediate production from anyone selected in June. Just prove to me, and anyone else critical of recent failures, that new measures are being adopted for evaluating players. Because whatever the White Sox have been using recently hasn't worked. -

QUOTE(fathom @ May 16, 2007 -> 11:13 PM) I wish there was reason for optimism about this offense for the next few years. When Konerko, Thome, and AJP are the only people you know will be here in two years, that's troubling. I wouldn't be shocked if the White Sox endured a 90+ loss season within the immediate future. There's numerous positions which require an upgrade (or atleast a cheap(er) alternative), and even our perceived strength -- starting pitching -- may not provide immediate help for 2008. I hope for nothing more than Sox fans to apply tremendous pressure on management beginning this June. First order is the draft. I'm first looking forward to faces behind the picks on TV. Aside from that, I'm hoping the employees involved with the amateur draft are beginning to feel the threat of a pink-slip down their necks. Production from our selections-- especially those from within the first round-- needs to improve now. It's not enough to talk about our lack of top round picks, or how we've fared in the latter rounds; the first round has been pitiful for over a decade with this organizaiton. . -
QUOTE(fathom @ May 16, 2007 -> 11:28 PM) Be prepared to be pissed off about how we handle the starting spot on Sunday. I know you have Charlotte connections. Speak on it, son.
