  1. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 03:31 PM) He threw a pathetic hanger. That's probably why. 9-5 Giants. Maybe. I was thinking perhaps Tracey shook Widger off or threw another pitch which Widger wasn't expecting. It's just odd because of all the crap we've seen this spring, never have I noticed our catchers out there noticeably upset.
  2. Look to anyone else like Widger gave Tracey an earful after that homerun?
  3. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:35 PM) [quickman] They all suck. Trade them all. [/quickman] Quickman has it easy on Soxtalk. He'll say every minor leaguer is terrible--trade all of them--and nothing happens. Meanwhile I'll say, "our system is only good for producing Aaron Rowand and Felix Diaz clones" and all hell will break loose.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:28 PM) Wow, our minor league pitchers are awesome! Yes, it's very pitiful to watch. I know.
  5. Can we just forfeit the game right now and save the misfortune of watching this six run deficit become twenty?
  6. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) Anyone ever seen Troma's "Redneck Zombies"? that was the best lost in the southern hickville movie ever made! And zombie movie for that matter Have I? s***, I've had the video for nearly 8 years. Typical Troma production:Cheap effects, terrible script, odd 80's soundtrack, plenty of gore--especially the scene at the end when the Zombie's head is blown off. I recently bought "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" from a video store in Park Ridge which was closing. Interested in watching this pile of crap.
  7. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:06 PM) No roid-boy... Dammit. I was looking forward to Lumsden and possibly Logan facing him.
  8. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 02:22 AM) Why can't it be this simple? Just read through the comments posted after the article. They grudgingly accept our championship, yet continually note our "luck." I admit there were numerous lucky breaks with we were fortunate to exploit--I'd be foolish not to--but winning 99 regular season games should have given some consideration to our talent. I've said this before, and I'll say it again--anyone feeling confused by the Sox success can label our championship "lucky," but I guarantee Beane wishes he ballclub were this "lucky." Rather be the worst team within the last 15 years to win a World Series title than the best not to. The arrogance which is often evident through the writings of sabermetric fans is why we'll never be given credit. I don't dislike the advent of advanced statistics in baseball. I don't feel threatened, as Hawk or other oldtimers might. It just so happens these people are incredibly absorbed in their methods and would rather dish out plates of "luck" than reflect upon reasons why they're wrong when such events occur. Although I suppose influencing Baseball Prospectus to reassess defense can be chalked up as a small success. Honestly, aside from the personal satisfaction and pride of winning another World Series, I'd like to win another to prove everyone wrong. Our players have all the motivation they could possibly need with a subcription to Baseball Prospectus. Maybe if we repeat, BP will create a new category named after the White Sox which can accurately predict luck.
  9. QUOTE(SnB @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 09:42 PM) Here's one of my theories: If you're wearing a north face jacket, there's a 95% chance I hate you. Interesting. The particular brand does attract an astounding number of douche bags.... Since this topic is taken off course, I'll add one of my own theories concerning college. I noticed it several days ago. -Collar popping is exclusively a northside/downtown phenomenon. I've only turned 21 two weeks ago, but since I've been on spring break this week I've had time to go around numerous bars. Of the four I've been to on the Southside I haven't seen ONE f***er popping their collar. Of the four I've been to on the Northside (spec. Rush/Division St.) there have been several in each bar. Wonder what could be said about that.
  10. With the whole "lost in woods/mountains/desert with crazy locals" sub-genre, I'd say Deliverance is near the bottom. I'd recommend Dead End far before any movie with Burt Reynolds.
  11. HAPP3Y BURFDAY Soxtalk needs more posters like Kalapse. People who like stirring s*** up and deflating internet egos.
  12. The only force that can stop the momentum of this movie is its release date. IMO, August 18 is too far away. Even bmags has to admit five months of "MOTHERf***ING SNAKES!" is pushing it. If New Line Cinema would releases this movie in June it would pull in respectable box-office numbers.
  13. QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 03:53 PM) U of I is beginning to rival Northwestern in academics. Good for them. I'm sick and tired of seeing universities lower their standards simply to pad their bottom line. I wouldn't doubt it. My cousin is a law graduate from University of Chicago, and said the most difficult aspect of such a prestigious university is admissions. Beyond that, everyone across the nation is learning the same material. Only so many methods to teach business ethics, or understand Quantum physics. One school doesn't have access to exclusion information another doesn't. A paper enscribed "Northwestern" is worth more than "University of Illinois," but why? Reputation. Professors with published material in their field and extended education select schools known for their high standards. But truthfully, is a professor with an elaborate resume and 15 years of experience any better at teaching material than someone less credited, although with 25+ years? Think about this--how does one even judge a school's academics? By the students themselves? By the ACT scores of incoming students? By the jobs these students hold after graduating? It's sort of a ridiculous system. If I were to tell anyone UIC is the second most difficult school academically in Chicago, they'd probably laugh. But it's true--if you were to judge by the academic history of professors. Atleast in engineering and several LAS programs This is because there's an odd system of transfer which happens in Chicago. UofC professors often are stolen by UIC. Our school is labeled a "research institution," which attracts top-tier professors from the school. So why isn't UIC a more highly regarded institution academically? Low admission standards brought on a student population of 10,000. An ACT score of 20 could probably get you in. Many people expected our school's child psychology program to be rated within the top 10 in the nation this past fall. An entire team of psychologists from U of C transfered over to our college from their nationally ranked program By logic, you would expect the rating to move over to ours, but it didn't. So many factors--many political--go into judging one school over another. U of I probably dos have their share of quality professors. Just because they're not appointed with a spot on Princeton Review/US News doesn't mean s***.
  14. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) Cruz reportedly has strong feelings about being a starter. He was terrible last season as a MLB reliever, then went down to the minors and excelled as a starter. I have some worries that he just half-asses it when he's put in relief. Any thoughts on this? Still, he'd clearly be better than Thornton. But I wonder if he might be worth more to another team as a prospective starter. Interesting how Cruz is insisting on a starting position. If Sox could somehow acquire him from Oakland without paying a high price, it could open several intruiging possibilities: 1. Trade Contreras to a preferably National League ballclub for a package centering around one quality BP arm and one legitimate SP prospect. 2. As result of Contreras' departure, McCarthy moves into the rotation. 3. Cruz replaces McCarthy in the bullpen. If an injury occurs which requires a replacement, Cruz is available. 4. One bullpen spot remains--likely belonging to Thornton. Logan is sent down to the minors. Your rotation is set with Vazquez/Buehrle/Garland/Garcia/McCarthy Bullpen is set with Cruz/Politte/Cotts/Jenks/BP Arm from Count trade/Thornton. Improbable--yes--but certaintly not a scenario I'd be against. Beane just won't give Cruz away to a fellow American League contender for nothing. That's one noteable problem...
  15. QUOTE(ptatc @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:32 PM) Rest has absolutely nothing to do with this back problem. He has an instability caused by a disc problem. It's a matter of trying to keep the back in a good mechanical position to minimize the excess motion. The more motion that occurs the more inflammation will appear. This is the reason for the epidural injections. It's like putting a crap load of ibuprofen in a localized area to decrease the inflammation. He will have the problem until he has surgery. The key is to manage the problem through rehab and meds. Hermie (the trainer) is one of the best at managing this type of thing. Give them a chance. Thanks for setting me straight on this issue. That's why people with actual medical knowledge should post here more often. I"m still worried on whether or not Hermanson can be an effective reliever. Unless epidural injections allow him a fluid delivery, he'll still have a drastic drop in velocity.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) According to SI, Turnbow is currently throwing around 96. They're wrong--he's throwing 98. I saw with my own eyes when he pitched against our club. No velocity problems from Turnbow this spring.
  17. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:06 PM) Well, if Ozzie cant rely on him then I am fairly sure he wont pitch him. Ozzie has never been one to make sure everyone gets in their regular work in the bullpen, and he goes with the hot hand a lot. Hermanson hasnt had a good spring by any stretch though, and already having lower back problems is just not good. Those kinds of injuries arent going to heal at all and are probably going to get worse over the course of the season. If Hermanson's back troubles persist and he's ineffective pitching, he should atleast consider beginning the season on the 15 day disabled list. Honestly, after watching him this spring I believe he's done. If devoting the ENTIRE offseason to rest your back doesn't provide comfort, then what difference will a short period make? I recall last season Hermanson said his aches were so severe he had trouble picking up his own daugher. This is a problem. If he returns from any designated DL trip and continues to falter, what happens next? Someone will have to make a difficult decision--whether it's Hermanson or the Sox. Don't need backless pitchers on our roster.
  18. QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 04:00 PM) Hermy gives up a walk and double in 1 IP. 3-1 Ms. What's funny is that line is actually an improvement for Hermanson. Previous outings you could expect two walks and two doubles. Hopefully his velocity is recovering, although I doubt it.
  19. QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 03:46 PM) The White Sox have just one hit thru 7 innings. Who's in today's lineup? Moyer just doesn't pitch 5+ innings of one hit ball against a major league lineup in 2006.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) Everyone loves Chris Singleton... Now what is going on with the game??? From a recent scoreboard update, Seattle was leading 2-0 in the 7th. Garcia gave up an RBI single to Everett.
  21. I knew from the moment Singleton was hired he'd be atrocious. I didn't need to "give him a chance," or allow time for him to "become comfortable in the booth" to know it was a mistake. Hiring Singleton would have been acceptable if the personality opposing him were strong--such as Hawk. The problem is neither Singleton or Farmer are particularly good at providing PBP or analyzing a situation. I'm sure someone is going to whine about my criticism, but I stand by it.
  22. Nope. Game ends on a strikeout. Overall, nice game from our club today. Can't expect much from Redding and Nomo anyways.
  23. It's not worth complaining, but atleast two pitches from the last AB should have ended the game. You almost expect a walk off HR now.
  24. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Mar 23, 2006 -> 04:44 PM) Thornton hasn't pitched today. Yes. Against Diamondbacks AAA affiliate in Tuscon.
