2014-2015 MLB off season player movement and rumors thread
GGajewski18 replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
Everyone is on the Cubs nuts with what they are going to do, yet the Cardinals out of nowhere just won the off season. Getting Heyward and Walden for Miller who they weren't high on is an amazing trade for St Louis. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 11:16 AM) Interesting. I assume the Cardinals are confident that they can get Heyward extended. If I'm Heyward, I sign an extension tomorrow. That team consistently competes in the playoffs and young enough where they will for a while.

Great deal for the Cardinals.

And people thought Hayward wasn't going to get traded. Wow, what a steal by the Cardinals. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) Jesse Crain signed a 3 year, $13 million deal. Andrew Miller might sign for 3x that amount and more than 2x the AAV. Times have changed in baseball. At that time, that was an expensive deal for middle relief pitching. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) The last time we invested "heavily" into set-up guys, it didn't go so well with MacDougal, Dotel and Linebrink. That said, we have to find the middle ground between buying at an absolute peak and finding "bargains" on the downside who end up costing almost as much (and probably moreso if you factor in replacing them constantly) as the premiere players. Jesse Crain was really good until the last year of his contract when he got hurt. That was a heavy investment in relief pitching. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 06:39 PM) The Pirates also have Josh Bell waiting in the wings. He should be ready to join their crowded outfield soon. Watching the AFL All Star game, they were talking about Bell and how he has been playing some first base lately. I could be mistaken, but that would be awesome for the Pirates Bell can make the transition to first.

If Hahn can somehow pull off signing Miller, that would be amazing. The comments underneath are interesting, what about Bastardo from the Phillies. He's an interesting arm to look at too. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2014 -> 08:00 AM) Bernie Pleskoff @BerniePleskoff 26m26 minutes ago #Dbacks acquire Jeremy Hellickson from #Rays 4 prospects SS Andrew Velazquez and OF Justin Williams. I have never seen either prospect play According to MLB, they were the Backs 11th and 13th rated prospects. Velazquez was the player last year to reach base 70 straight games. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 02:21 PM) And if you get those targets but still have something left over the Astros want and you are willing to dump. I have the feeling this offseason will either really excite people or really bum people out. I don't think there will be much meh. I agree with this. The FA class next year for pitchers is going to be pretty damn good. I wouldn't be upset if Sox holder out until then to make a move for a righty starter. With Castro, I figure he can't be worth a whole lot coming off a down year. How many more years does of control with him?
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 05:42 PM) It's also a situation where the contract could be somewhat backloaded so we still have a large pool of money to be used for 2015 in trades / other FA signings. Very true, as he would get more money as he enters his prime years. With that said, I give it a 1% chance that the Sox get him.
-
This is certainly interesting that a mystery team has emerged but I don't think its the Sox like others have said. Hahn has said that they would go after him if he were to bat lefty, but I don't know if I like that excuse because if your scouts think he's good enough to play LF, you can go the cheap route in FA for a lefty bat (LaRoche). On top of that, Tomas comes with no draft pick compensation. And still have assets to trade for a right handed starter or another offensive piece.

Well deserved even though its 4th.

Mets/LAD/NYy interested in Alexei, according to Levine

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) Take a look at his Minor League Stats. He consistently gave up a lot of hits. I'm not impressed. Doesn't look like he's be much better than Noesi. His WHIP was 1.4 this past season. A bit high. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) They'll be done tomorrow. The GM Meetings are always typically quiet. QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) They ended yesterday afternoon Well that's odd lol. But back to Alexei, I really don't think we trade him unless Wheeler or Syndegaard is coming back in the trade. Unless Montero and a couple more interesting pieces are involved. Alexei is a key part of the Sox success and has been a mainstay at SS for sometime now, the young players will need to look to him for leadership and guidance other than Sale and Abreu. -

Just off topic question real quick, are the GM meetings still going on until tomorrow, like an all week thing or have they finished? -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 10:48 AM) We are 100% done and there is a chance ILL and others could add some guys so I think overall the Big Ten could improve. I think the only player left on Illinois' radar is Marcus Lovett. Unless Murray reclassifies to '15. -

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) True , I forgot. And how he mentioned that maybe he could end up somewhere else too Yeah but he did say is that he wants to win with the White Sox. I wouldn't be too worried about that because Sox still have control of him for 2 more years and 3 more years of arbitration. So 5 total years, which would take him to 33 years old. -

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:34 PM) Sorry if this is dumb/been discussed already, but should we worry about trading alexei and viciedo and the effect it'd have on abreu? Just wondering because the whole Cuban thing and him mentioning when he won Roy how having both has really helped him, etc (with him having the opt out etc) Abreu did address that when they interviewed him when he won ROY. He says they were a crucial part but he said he understands that its a business. -

Went on the Yankees board to see what they would offer for Alexei, one poster suggested JR Murphy and Shane Greene for Alexei. What do you guys think? -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) I understand everyone's concern about dealing Ramirez but if they can snag Syndergaard or Wheeler they have to make the trade. While I disagree with the premise of their Cuddyer move, I don't think that Sandy Alderson is an idiot. Cuddyer isn't going to be the only thing the Mets do this offseason. Cuddyer alone just doesn't make any sense. Get them to overpay. Exactly. The Cuddyer move is a win now move. They will make more trades/signings this off season so they can compete for the division next year. Wait for them to overpay just like Jimmy said.
