Obviously change may be on the horizon but Wheeler is literally the anti White Sox signing. A pitcher for more than 5 years over 100 mil. Throw on top of that the fact that he has injury history and I think almost any team in baseball can take it to a level that will make the Sox bow out. I hope I’m wrong but I see the Twins as a team who has tasted winning and will do what it takes to stay on top of the division. This is all gut feelings and past history that makes me feel this way.

I mean, if the twins want to give him 6/$125M+, so be it.  5/$100M would be my max on Wheeler.  Even at those years and dollars there is a better than 50/50 chance that contract turns into a real mess.  I know its a risk the Sox need to take, but at some point he just gets to the point to where you may as well pay up for Strasburg or Cole.

Depends what you think of Senzel and Aquino. If you think their bonafide stars, that's not a bad lineup if they add another piece to it. Suraez and Votto could use a rejuvenated year though.

Senzel is legit.  Aquino.......most likely is not an MLB regular, despite his super fun couple months.

Strange. Haven’t heard anyone else report the Ryan Burr DFA either. Still no official word on Yolmer from the Sox. Are they just not announcing DFAs?

They’ve probably just told Burr they’re going to DFA when they need space, but it won’t formally occur until they need the space.

Colome is a decision point, but he likely gets tendered.

I don't really think he is a decision point at all.  They knew what his arb price would be in 2020 when they traded for him, and he had about as good of a season as the Sox could have hoped.  Obviously her peripherals were not as good as his ERA in 2019, but he's still a solid contributor and we're in no position to be punting an above average bullpen arm.

Ummm...the Indians probably had double the number of early extensions over the last two decades (when Hahn was already in charge of this for the Sox).  The Rays are way more proficient, for example.

I mean, I think its pretty fair to give Hahn props for his extensions.  The only reason we have Moncada, Giolito, Eloy, Kopech Lopez and Cease are due to Hahn's extensions of key players.

You put Marte in this coming years offense and we win the division hands down.  Not sure the details on what it would take, but if that is a realistic option I think you have to do that and stick him in right

Not sure any one addition would “win this division hands down”.

  7. I think as we stand today without Yolmer, the correct figure is somewhere in the $81-83 range including arb eligible players.

Should be plenty left to spend. $40M of it will be two SP and RF, if I had to guess. The rest will be on the cheap.

I don’t understand the notion of trotting out a 110 wRC+ bat at every position as the only way to build a team. If you could save $$ at RF (let’s be honest, none of the RF options are that great this year) to build up your bullpen or get another notable starter alongside Wheeler, you’d at least think on it.

Pillar has averaged 2 WAR/year for the last 4 years and improves OF defense compares to many other RF options. And taking a closer look, I think you could even get him for 1/$6 or 2/$11, and if you could get him for cheap and pair with a offensive minded platoon, say Matt Joyce, there is a lot of surplus value right there. Plus, I think Pillar would have been the 8th or 9th hitter on the team anyways.

Yah, I mean I'd vastly prefer David Peralta who should be only slightly more expensive than what you suggested for Pillar.  But I hear ya.

I don't know if this is where I'd spend my money but he'd make a really good 4th OF and he'd probably get a ton of playing time in that role. Sub in for Eloy or Robert late in games to rest both or improve defense if the game is close, covers CF for the first few weeks of the season, lots of injury replacement time was available last year, would be an excellent platoon partner for Pederson or Calhoun, would move Leury's job to mostly being backup IF.

Exactly.  Doesn't take much to convince to replace Engel with Pillar.  Pillar would be a great 4th OF, but pretty gross as everyday RF.  But yah, doesn't seem like best way to spend that $15M.

If we sign Wheeler, I would look at some non tendered players to fill out some holes.

    RF - Pillar 2/$15M

    2B/Util - Profar 2/$9M

SP - Tyler Anderson 1/$2M with $4M team option

Though I have a hard time seeing Giants nontendering Anderson having just claimed him last month, nonetheless Pillar and Profar could be cheap, under the radar options.

I'd be surprised if Profar actually got non-tendered, but if he did he would fit on just about any team.  Would like that move.

Pillar would be pretty gross as the everyday RF, though he would make the OF defense much improved.
