  1. Still interested.  Higher the buy-in the better as far as I am concerned.  Anything less than $200, I am probably out - just not worth the time commitment.

As mentioned previously, I am a yahoo fantasy guy.  Don't really care to debate the positives/negatives of the yahoo platform vs. others, but its what I use and I am not going to add a league in a different platform.  If you guys elect to go with a different platform, that is completely fine with me, I will just pass.

@iWiN4PreP, either way, thanks for trying to set this up.

Y'all - we did not at any point previously acquire a hall of fame player! This is not reverting to previous ways!

Revert back to previous ways = making short sighted moves that hamper the future success of the organization in year that was always a pipedream to compete anyway.

But those 81 wins in 2020 with Betts will be oh so sweet when he signs a $350M deal with the Dodgers in February 2021.

    ...okay, so again

April can be covered with 4 pitchers.

There is no reason Cease could not start a full year.

Carlos Rodon will be available, and has discussed even the all star break for a return.

Is it ideal? No. Is it that different than what the Brewers cobbled together? Or how the cardinals rode a pretty terrible back rotation to the playoffs with excellent 2nd half defense?

Would I rather that then just doing the puzzle piece roster creation with average pieces you all want? Absolutely. Great players are great because they are very good and hard to find. A Hall of Famer is available and it's not the right time to acquire him because we need a cheap 5th starter?

    Give me a break.

Sox should be all over this. He's one of the best players in baseball.

We're all welcome to our own opinions.  You're a smart baseball guy, and I definitely respect your opinion.

But the fact that you think we went through this incredibly painful process just to revert back to our old ways in the 11th hour is strange to me.  But to each their own.  In the incredibly unlikely event the White Sox acquire Mookie Betts, I will be VERY excited.  He is a wonderful player.  I just think it is a very short sighted move assuming the return includes significant pieces of the future - Reynaldo, Cease, Madrigal, etc. all included.  Just glad to see you've at least changed your tune from moving Cease for Betts to ReyLo for Betts.  That is slightly less horrific.

If we can get him for Dunning + Basabe + Sheets, go get him Rick!  But we both know that ain't happenin'.

Trading for Mookie Betts is pushing all of your chips in on 2020 while simultaneously leaving the exact same holes as you had in '20 going into '21.

And also leaves 2020 wildly short on pitching to actually be "all in", and ~$30M less to fix it.  If the Sox trade Reynaldo in a package for Mookie Betts, and actually want to go all in on 2020, they better be prepared to also pony up for Cole/Stras and another 2nd/3rd tier FA SP, thereby having a 2020 payroll north of $160M.  Otherwise none of it works.

You are the one putting weird restrictions around Kopech, reminder:

April has a lot of rainouts and days off that typically don't require 5 starters

Carlos rodon is also joining the staff around august

You can also do some bullpen days as get-me-overs, and there are likely some decent Minor league signees which could be decent for some starts.

I also don't believe Lopez or dunning are actually long-term pieces of core, so this is short term considerations anyway.

First of all, its not weird.  Michael Kopech is at most going to throw 170 innings total next seasons (AAA and MLB).  If he starts in the big leagues, he's shut down by August 1st.  If he starts in AAA, works once per week in short stints, eventually working up to 4-5 inning outings, and is called up in late May/early June - the Sox should then have him unimpeded through the rest of the season, AND they get the extra year of control.

Also, Rick Hahn has said Kopech is starting in AAA multiple times.  Dismiss the available information to fit your Mookie Betts wishes if you so desire, but the chances of Kopech breaking camp with the team are rather small.

why would you even trade Sheets straight up for Betts?

We are not going to compete as we are built this year. Unless you think Betts playing w/ us this year increase the chances of him signing there's no way I trade anything of value for him.

Now, if we sign Stras/Cole + a strong DH then I would try to pull the trade bc that would place us in contention this year and if he leaves next year oh well.

This would require a payroll approaching $175M in 2020.  Obviously not happening.

Then wait a year and get him next offseason. Everyone on this board hated the idea of trading for Machado for 3 months, but loves the idea of Betts? It doesn’t make sense to give the Red Sox players for a rental that isn’t going to push you over the top.

To be fair, there are only like a handful of intelligent people pushing for the Sox to acquire Mookie Betts.

All the crazies on Twitter that don't know what they're talking about can be mostly dismissed.

I also don't think they need 3 pitchers but regardless, no, I don't think they need to add a bench piece nor do I think they need to add a bullpen piece.

Also because I'm not a big fan of this pitching crop and prefer they wait a year, I'd be fine with a hodge podge grab bag of miley, wood, wacha, roark, porcello, walker, and go into next year with your new HOF right fielder, get an actual good starter, and have another year of depth to trade from.

Got it.  So trade future assets for 1 year of Mookie Betts making $30M before you're a true contender.

And then go to battle in said 1 year with Mookie Betts with a rotation of Giolito-Cease-Kopech-Miley-Porcello, with Covey filling in for Kopech the first 2 months.

Can't see how this could wrong at all.  It would be fun to acquire Mookie Betts, but that team is .500.

You could switch that up, but Kopech will still be on an innings limit next year and starting his season in the majors will likely cost you down the stretch.  IMO, it’s ideal to ramp him up slowly in the minors, recoup that extra year of control, and let him go somewhat unrestricted June forward.

Exactly.  If Kopech starts the year in the bigs, he's shut down by August 1st, and he's also now a FA one year sooner than he would if the Sox let him slowly build up endurance in AAA.  It makes no sense - and furthermore, Hahn has been remarkably clear about Kopech starting in AAA multiple times already this offseason.

They're not significant pieces.  It's a reliever, a 4th OF and an injured pitcher for a top 3 player in the game.

Lol.  Lopez is not a reliever.  I don't give a fuck about Basabe.  I'd like to keep Dunning ideally, but I'd move him for Betts as I have already said minutes ago in this very thread.  I am not trading Lopez, and I don't really care to get into a debate on Lopez with someone who clearly doesn't value him at all by calling him a reliever.

So explain to me this: who is in the Sox OD rotation if they made this deal (Lopez + Dunning + Basabe for Betts).  Our 2020 payroll is now ~$110M after adding Mookie.  We have three rotation spots to fill.  Please explain to me how we fill those and stay within a reasonable 2020 budget ($135M max).

  11. 1 minute ago, Chicago White Sox said:

I mostly agree, but given we would get a comp pick back I’d be willing to give up Lopez + lesser prospects.

So now we have 3 rotation holes to fill, $28M less to spend to fill them, and while we solve RF for 2020, we still have to figure it out again next offseason.  Such a Kenny Williams move.  Betts is an awesome player, but I just don't see how it makes any sense to give up anything that projects to a significant piece of puzzle moving forward for 1 year.

I honestly don’t think we will end up with anything more in FA. It will most likely come via trade. We fall short on Castellanos, and lowball Keuchel.... the only one that we could completely execute on (and possibly screw ourselves by doing) is Bumgarner.

There is 0% chance the Sox are done in FA this offseason.  They're not just going to pack up and go home after offering a good not great pitcher $25M AAV and he signed elsewhere.  C'mon, such a silly take.

oh damn you are starting to turn.

Funny thing to me is losing out on wheeler makes me less amenable to the betts trade. I thought we'd be able to add a high end starter...now we still have no idea who that can be.

I am not really turning.  I am never trading Cease or Madrigal for Betts.  I am not even interested in trading Reylo for Betts.  That is what I am extremely against and have mentioned countless times when this has been discussed.

The only packages I would offer for Mookie are packages that other orgs in their window should be able to easily beat.  We both know that a Dunning + Basabe + Sheets offer has no chance to get accepted, and that is about the max I would be willing to give up for 1 year of Mookie.

I think the BoSox would rather keep Mookie than Price and Eovaldi.

I think they really want to lose those contracts, both of them if possible.

No team is going to sign up for either Price or Eovaldi unless the BoSox agree to eat a huge chunk of those contracts and/or they include Benintendi.

The other thing I mentioned earlier is that the Carmines need a catcher we we can deal from a position of strength there.

Or perhaps a straight trade  - McCann+ Fulmer or something... for Benintendi

McCann + Fulmer for Benintendi? Lol.

I realize the Sox will not actually get Rendon, but you find a way to get a perennial MVP candidate into your lineup. Next season's FA class outside of Betts, Springer, Simmons, Semien, Realmuto, Bauer, Ray the pickings are pretty slim

Thankfully there are several RF of note, and that will likely be our only position of need at that point, assuming we sign a SP to a multiyear deal yet this offseason.

  16. Just now, steveno89 said:

It does fill a hole though. It adds a legitimate veteran superstar to the organization who is in his prime right as we are looking to contend. You cannot trade for a player like Rendon, you either have to develop them or blow your wad in free agency. This is the time for the Sox to sack up and pay a star after missing badly on Machado.

Move Moncada to RF, Madrigal goes to 2B, Robert in CF and enjoy the fireworks. It would easily be one of the strongest White Sox lineups ever.

Yah, don't get your hopes up.

Moncada isn't moving to the OF, so you move him back to 2B, and then trade Madrigal for a SP/RF.  And if its for SP, you still have a hole in RF.  And if its for a RF, you still have a SP hole and $250M+ less to fix it.

Your plan sounds great if this were a video game.  But its not.  Like I said, I'd love to see it - but it just doesn't seem even remotely possible.

  17. Just now, BackDoorBreach said:

I'm trading Madrigal in this scenario for SP/RF and putting Yo at 2b.

So we just spend a quarter billion dollars on 1 player and didn't even fill a hole?  Which is exactly this scenario is never going to happen for this organization, among other reasons.

Look, I'd love to have Rendon play for the White Sox.  But this isn't MLB the Show.  They aren't moving Moncada again (especially to a position he's never played), they aren't trading Madrigal just to create a hole at 2B to fill one elsewhere, and Rendon isn't going to sign somewhere to play somewhere other than 3B. The guy is good, but based on where we sit today, its just not a great use of limited funds.

That being said, if the Sox actually did it - I certainly wouldn't complain -  I just don't see it as every remotely realistic.

  18. I think the White Sox young pitching staff is going to be in much better shape if we have a RF that we don't need to wish/hope improves to merely "serviceable".  Eloy is our LF, and he isn't going to be a good one.  We really need at worst a slightly above average defensive RF, or this team isn't going to be very good.  As Hawk always said, rule #1 in baseball is to catch the ball.  And the man is right.

I think when he gets to 10 years service time during the season. He's currently listed on Baseball Ref at 9 years and 61 days.

Man, time flies.  Can't believe Chris Sale has been in the league for 10 fuckin years.
