Thanks for the insight. Anyone else kinda numb to this after last offseason? I won't be crushed if they miss out. It's Just onto the next one.

To me, it all depends on the price.  If he signs elsewhere for 5/$115M or less, I'd be pretty disappointed. I have previously said 5/$100M would be my max on Wheeler, I would be willing to stretch to 5/$115M to make it happened.  If it starts getting much over $23M AAV for 5 years or more, and you just have the looks of what could be a very bad contract if Wheeler doesn't continue his 18-19 performance.

Disagree completely, they have the money and this is probably their biggest area of need in a rotation full of question marks outside of Giolito. We know they won't engage with Strasburg or Cole so they are back to relying on lightning in a bottle to get to the playoffs with their pitchers. One signing does not mark a change in culture.

I agree, but it is a step in the right direction.  It is is certainly better than sitting here today with Grandal having signed elsewhere.  Let's not forget Thanksgiving was less than a week ago, the winter meetings have not even occurred yet, and all of the major FAs are still available outside of Grandal.

The sky is not falling because other teams are also interested in Wheeler.

So as soon as someone else signs a more premium FA that narrative becomes correct again? Considering I still think Cole was the best signing they could make this offseason, I will fully agree to your standards.

Not really.  I think the Sox dispelled a lot of narratives with the Grandal signing, and I fully expect them to sign at least 1 more impact FA this offseason.  Cole was never going to happen - but yes, we all know that signing the most unattainable FA on the market was the only way you'd be pleased with the offseason.

If the FO swings and misses on Wheeler, that's two off-seasons in a row where they publicly chased a "premium" free agent and didn't land them. With all of the superlatives and Hahnspeak surrounding the rebuild, I wouldn't be surprised if this was an intentional strategy.

Don't forget, Jerry said it himself, carrot on the stick.

To date, the Sox have signed the most premium FA that has been signed this offseason.  So maybe its time to put this narrative away for the season, even if someone decides to give Zack Wheeler a stupid amount of money and he signs elsewhere.

Signing stras at 5/175 would put sox payroll around 113. That should still leave room for other things for a team trying to be competitive. There is no reason this team needs to cap themselves at $120 mill

I don't see any realistic scenario that Straburg signs for 5/$175M if Wheeler is truly approaching Corbin territory.

edit: and if that is realistic, signing Wheeler for anything over $110M is insane.  Just give it to Strasburg.

This is last off-season all over again just earlier.   We get the Joc rumor and the leading candidate for a top free agent then everything fades away and the White Sox were at the table but in the end the cost was too much for their budget and philosophy.

The White Sox are not in on Ryu, Cole or Stras.

    Carry  on.

Ryu very well get less than half of what the Sox have already offered to Wheeler.

    so try again buddy.

I'm very disappointed in our fan base. Yesterday we were all good with 5 and 110 if it came to it. Today, we can't fathom 6 and 120. I am not a fan of overpaying players but sometimes shit happens and you have to put your big boy pants on.

It’s well documented the Sox already have an offer on the table for 5/$100M+. Which is an aggressive offer. I’m sure they have some wiggle room, but at some point you have to draw the line in sand when you’re talking about a good but definitely not elite pitcher.

Do you think we went this deep into this process because we are making a run at those 3.  Why wouldn't we just go directly to Cole and Stras and backup the brinks truck and say what Uniform # would you like.  This sounds like target 1A for the sox.

Because Cole and Strasburg aren’t signing until February. Maybe the Sox change course and start talking to those two if Wheeler signs elsewhere.

Wheeler are 6/$125M+ is more than likely going to be a rough contract.

Odds are that the ship has sailed on a Castellanos signing...and a Wheeler deal would put the final fork in it.

You can, of course, argue the merits of Castellanos AND Ryu vs. Wheeler.

If Wheeler signed, Sox payroll is slightly over $100M. They definitely have room for another $13-16M AAV player.

Thank you ! My point exactly. No one knows who will reach full potential and trading Rutherford or whoever for 1 year of Joc in a season where Joc is useless if we don't make the playoffs is just a poor choice rather than giving your so called fringe OF prospects another year.

I mean if the price is a guy like Sheets or Gonzalez..who cares?

I hope you're right.  But Sox have a lot to fix themselves.  They really could use a real 8th inning flamethrower, e.g.  And a RF (although I'd be satisfied with a Puig type).

If the Sox like Wheeler, they need to overpay for him.  That's how the Nats got Corbin; they really liked him (and they were correct in that assessment) and they paid a premium price.  And were rewarded.

A little early to call that Corbin contract a reward. But generally, I agree with what you’re saying outside of the Puig nonsense.

They either are planning on keep Kopech in the minors to get back the extra year or maybe they want to move Lopez to the pen.

Yah I am moreso referring to 2021.  Let's just say Sox sign Wheeler 5/$105 and Hamels 2/$25M.

In 2021 you have Giolito, Wheeler, Kopech, Cease, Lopez, Hamels, and Rodon.  With Dunning, Lambert and Stiever not terribly far away.  That is a lot of SP.  Obviously someone will get injured and maybe Lopez isn't a SP long term (I think he is), but that I just don't see the need to add 2 multiyear SP.  But I guess you could always just trade from the depth - its not the worth thing in the world.

    This tells me two things.

    1. Kopech will be called up in June.

    2. He will replace Lopez when he comes back. Unless Hamels is awful, in which case he becomes a lefty ace hopefully in the pen.

For anyone who thinks it's crazy to call up Kopech in June remember this we get that year back we lost, and he will pitch through the remainder of the season and for a playoff run. They will tell him they want him to ease back into things at AAA limiting innings pitched and increasing rest.

I think its a no brainer for Kopech to be in AAA with the kid gloves until they get the year of control back. Hahn has pretty much already said that is what they're going to do.
