If you just picked last season or the last 3 they are much closer. The Joc age 28 season probably pushes it over the top but Calhoun has been in the AL. The Sox have certainly has problems bringing in NL hitters .

I don't really consider 8% above average and 27% above average that close, but yah.

Kole Calhoun would be fine with me, in all honesty.  I'd prefer him to spending a bunch of money on a DH to play RF in Castellanos or Ozuna.  If you're going to sign a FA RF, Calhoun is one a handful that make some degree of sense because he is a plus defender.

But there are a handful of trade targets that fit much better on 1 year deals that should be pretty cheap to acquire.

How much better is Joc than Kole Calhoun ? You could probably get Calhoun for the same money  or less and not give up a player.

Joc Pederson has been worth 5.7 fWAR with a 127 wRC+ the last two seasons.

    Calhoun 2.5 fWAR wiht a wRC+ if 95.

Calhoun is a better defender, but Joc is clearly the much better all around player, and he isn't a bad defender.

Don't think Familia is the money they want to rid themselves. Cespedes and Cano both top that list . To take on that Cano contract they'd have to eat money and give up player(s) since its still got 4 years to go. Cespedes is 1 year $29.5M but with a full NTC. I don't know if the Mets are trying to take action to change his contract from guaranteed to non-guaranteed which is a better way to explain it then simply voiding it. Apparently Cespedes could play in 2020 since he has been taking BP .

Cano is owed $92M , AAV $24M with a cap hit of $20.25M  since the Mariners give them $3.75M every year for the final 4 years.  He also has a full no trade clause. Both would have to agree to waive the NTC.

Rosenthal specifically mentioned Familia and Lowry.

It wouldn't be too crazy to see them signed to minor league deals, right?

No, but there was a FAR higher likelihood of retaining them in the org when another team had to place Burr/Frare on their 40 man roster. Now all 30 clubs can sign them to a minor league deal without a 40 man spot.

I would think if the Sox wanted to retain them, they would have DFAd and not non tendered guys making MLB minimum.

Link here's a rundown on how they go, the league the player is in would get precedence (if claimed).

I could have sworn I read somewhere that the in the offseason, waiver priority goes to the worst team in the opposite league first.  In which case the Marlins would have had first dibs.

  6. On a 1 year deal, I have zero issues with Hamels at all, so long as he isn't the marquee SP addition. I suppose I could live with him on a reasonable 2 year deal, but things will get pretty crowded in the rotation in 2021.  These things tend to work themselves out though, so having too much SP isn't a horrible thing.  Could always trade Hamels next offseason as well if need be, assuming he doesn't have an awful 2020.

  7. I really don't see the Sox just punting Collins in a trade.  He isn't going to have a ton of trade value, he is dirt cheap, and he provides two of the things our lineup needs most (high OBP/left handed).  Worst case scenario, IMO, is he starts the year in AAA as insurance.  I still think the Sox are going to do a C/DH/1B rotation something like this:

Grandal: Catcher 90 games, DH 30 games, 1B 30 games

McCann: Catcher: 60 games, DH 20 games, 1B 10 games (primarily plays against LHP)

Collins: Catcher: 10 games, DH 50 games, 1B 30 games (primarily plays against RHP)

    Abreu: 1B 90 games, DH 60 games

Not exact numbers, but something like the above should work.  I also think Eloy will be sprinkled in at DH a little more often than he was in 2019.

Correct. It seems weird if they were not asking the players to take less though... why else protect them?

They could still come back but they are UFA's so they wouldnt be capable of taking an assignment.

I mean these we’re pre arb guys. It clearly wasn’t to save money (ie: asking the players to take less). Looks like they simply didn’t want either in the org. Far greater chance to retain them via a DFA as opposed to non tendering when all other clubs can get them without committing a 40 man spot.

I just don't think they thought anyone would claim him with the injury. He will likely end up accepting an assignment, but who knows?

Edit: thought this said Burr. Ignore.

My understand is that Burr and Frare are now FA.  They don't go on waivers.

I don't understand why the Sox would handle these two players that way unless they just wanted them gone.

Does this make Burr and Frare immediate FA?

    Pretty sure it does.

Don't really understand that move from the Sox perspective.  Why not try to get them through waivers?  Its not like the Sox have boatloads of MLB ready bullpen arms sitting in Charlotte as insurance?  We just lost 3 of them today.

Its not a big deal, but why not DFA Burr and Frare and hope they clear and then outright to AAA?
