Despaigne called up; Delmonico released; Fry to IL
Per MLBTR on Delmonico discussion: Injured players can’t be run through outright waivers, so Chicago opted to simply release Delmonico to open the necessary 40-man roster spot. As noted at the time of his surgery, it’s commonplace to see teams release and then re-sign 40-man players who incur a season-ending injury while in the minors. That could well be the case here. Delmonico certainly has the right to explore other options, but as a player who’s fresh off surgery and won’t be ready to play until 2020, his appeal to a new organization will be fairly limited.

Looks like I was right. Hah! Delmonico released.

I believe they'd need to promote him back to the bigs then immediately place him on the 60 day IL. Which I am sure Nicky would be thrilled about (more $/more service time). Just a bizarre scenario that doesn't play out too often. For example, the Sox would never do that with Adolfo, but in Nicky's case I doubt the Sox care about the service time at all. I guess we'll find out before too long as Nicky's 40 man spot is likely going to be needed between now and 8/1 IMO.

I've got a buddy who has been on super heavy adderall since he was a kid. Literally cannot live without it at this point. Its kind of sad. Maybe he actually (medically) needs it.....but I kind of think he is just purely addicted to it at this point. A few years back he got his bottle of adderall stolen when hosting a party, and the doctor wouldn't fill his prescription early, and he literally ruined a few close friendships playing the blame game because he wanted his drugs so bad. Sad.

That is almost certainly what happened and really the only thing that makes sense with the Sox optioning him instead of placing him on IL.

How did Delmonico sustain a season ending shoulder injury when he not appear in a game between being optioned and getting surgery?

Maybe semantics, but can they shift Nicky to the 60 day IL when hes on the minor league IL?

I mean I get it. I just think the Delmonico situation is unique. Why didn't they put him on the mlb IL a few weeks ago if he was hurt? Why did they option him and then he had surgery before appearing in AAA after being demoted? Its strange. If you're right, and you may be, the situation almost sucks more for Delmonico as he isn't cashing an MLB paycheck while he's out for the year. Obviously a grievance would be filed, but if this activity is allowed, why didn't the Sox option Kopech before his TJS, and then place him on the minor league IL to save service time? Part of the issue is we probably don't know the whole story with Nicky, but the whole situation is weird.

So MLB teams are required to keep a minor leaguer on their 40 man even if he is hurt and out for the season? What happens if 6-8 guys in the minors but on the 40 man all got hurt in one season and are done for the year? The team is basically working with a 32 man roster then? Farfetched scenario obviously, but I think there may be some gray area here. If you're right, the Sox should do what I just explained in the post above. Recall Delmonico, place him on the 60 day IL immediately, then add Despaigne to the 40 man. Why give away an asset if you don't need to?

Honestly, if Delmonico cannot be DFA'd they should recall him and immediately place him on the MLB 60 day IL to create 40 man space. Why would you DFA another player if you don't have to? He cannot play this season and is taking up a 40 man spot for no reason. At least with Adolfo, he's a legit prospect. With Delmonico, chances are fairly decent he never plays for the White Sox again. Very different scenarios. This is a fairly unique situation. I know a good amount about MLB roster management and how it all works, but this is one situation that I am not 100% sure of the rules on. I would love to hear from someone that is 100% positive on the rules in this situation and what options the Sox have.

I don't recall all the details. That may have been it, I just know he was suspended at one point, and I believe Baltimore released him due to it.

He is not on the major league IL. I could be wrong, but I think that is the major distinction here. If he were on the MLB IL, I agree. They also could just shift him to the 60 day IL to clear him from the roster, and then figure out what to do in the offseason. But since he is on the IL in AAA, they cannot do that (if my understanding is correct).

I don't really think Delmonico's case is common. For some reason they optioned him, he went to AAA but then never played. Then a couple weeks later we heard he was out for the season without ever appearing in a game for Charlotte after he was optioned. I would think generally when a player is hurt, they put you on the MLB IL, not option you. It sounds like his surgery was optional, so perhaps that is why. But still a little strange. If he was on the MLB IL, the Sox could shift him to the 60 day to make space on the 40 man. Since he is on the minor league IL, I don't believe they can put him on the 60 day. I would imagine if Delmonico got DFA'd he would not be the first minor leaguer on a 40 man but not an active MLB roster to get DFA'd when they get hurt and are done for the season. But I guess we'll see. If he was on the MLB IL, none of this would apply. Which is part of the reason why what happened with Delmonico is interesting, and if you're into conspiracies, there may be more to the story than what is out in the public. He also deleted all his social media accounts, and has had previous issues so who knows.

So what do we think the corresponding move will be today. Almost certainly will be Vieira optioned to AAA for the 25 man spot. But Sox need to create room on the 40 man. I do not believe guys on the minor league IL like Adolfo or Delmonico can be shifted to the 60 day MLB IL, so I believe somone will need to be DFA'd. Options not on 25 man include Delmonico, Engel, Palka, Medeiros, Cordero and Stephens. I will guess it's Delmonico, because I see very little chance he is claimed while he's out for the year, and he will be easily outrighted and retained in the org.

What options does Renteria have with Yonder Alonso?
I don't believe that is how it works. I think if he doesn't reach the vesting option, the Sox owe him $1M (unless he is on another MLB roster at the end of the season, then they owe him). I do not believe the buy-out has the power to override the option if it vests. That being said, there is no way the Sox are letting that option vest.

Cease pitched 2/3 of an inning yesterday, and was removed. He was not an option for today.

Rumor: Cease will be called up "very soon"
Yah. I get it. There is value to getting Cease some MLB action this year. I agree. I just am not willing to give up close to 20% of his control for a handful of starts. If they want to get him up here in a couple weeks, sure go for it. Once the ASG hits and if he still in AAA, just leave him there until late May 2020. Yes, I know control is different for pitchers than hitters, and you want to get as many innings out of each guy as you can while they're healthy, but still. The Kopech injury was an absolute kick to the nuts, and pretty much eliminated any chance of the Sox being long shot contenders in 2019, and this organization cannot afford to repeat that mistake. Get Cease up here in June, or leave him in AAA for the season. I understand others have different opinions on this and that is fine, but I feel pretty strongly about this one.

They are not going to let his option vest. They will just release him in August if they need to.

What options does Renteria have with Yonder Alonso?
Palka is 5/35 in June. His season average is down to .239 in AAA. I don't think now is the best time to call him up.

I thought we heard he'd be back in game action by June 1. Any updates?

I will repeat. Castillo serves a purpose on this team. You calling up Collins to sit on the bench 5 days a week? You calling up Collins to make McCann the back up. The only way you can get Collins DH at bats where he probably should be most of the time is keeping Castillo around.

Lopez Needs to go down
Just keep running him out there every 5th day.

Rumor: Cease will be called up "very soon"
Yah, I don't think he did himself any favors in getting up here "soon" though. That being said, I am about 3 weeks away from saying just leave Cease in AAA until next May. If you're going to use a year, may as well get your moneys worth an get him up here ASAP. I am fine with him in AAA, and I do think he has more refining to do (3 BB in 2/3 of an inning yesterday would state as much) but waiting to call him up for until mid August for a handful of meaningless starts is so dumb.
