QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 10:38 PM) Why, we're not in win or compete now mode. He went through the entire offseason last year basically doing nothing. No reason to be twitchy or itchy now. If anything, it's the Cubs with a lot more pressure to improve themselves instantly at the major league level. While I agree they won't win any WS next year, I definitely think they'll be competitive

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 10:21 PM) I don't think anything Hahn does will be as a response to this trade. He will do what he does based solely on the Sox needs. I guess I phrased that wrong. I dont think he will do something to try responding to this trade, but I wonder if he gets a little twitchy with a trade proposal he has on the table right now.

Interested to see how Rick responds to this trade

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 03:29 PM) I expect to see at least one of our SP's get dealt, soon. ::thumbs up icon::

QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) Is Wong better than Semien? When I read about Alexei going to Cards, I keep thinking that Cards will try sending us Kozma in return, plus a second rate prospect. Is Semien definitely going to play 2B even? I dont think having two guys that have showed good plate discipline and solid OBPs in the minors in the fold would be a bad thing. As for the Kozma and prospect package, no thanks.

QUOTE (mike65 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) Hello. I was last here around the trade deadline because I thought the Cardinals had interest in Ramirez. Back then, everybody was talking about Adams and Martinez as the possible trade chips. Now, with that pressure off, I am assuming the Cardinals still have interest. I read the other day that the four teams the Cardinals are speaking to regarding a trade are the Diamondbacks, Angels, Rangers, and White Sox. I don't believe the Cardinals will go the free agent route. Peralta doesn't fit the "Cardinal way" and Drew's being LH is a problem for the Cadinals because our GM has already said he doesn't want to go anymore left than the team is right now (Adams, Taveras, Carpenter, and Jay). What do you guys think the cost would be these days as compared to July? Wong or Martinez

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 08:15 AM) If the Sox were indeed on Johnson, that takes me from... Sox probably trading pitching... to Sox DEFINITELY trading pitching. Agreed. Makes me also wonder who they will target instead of Johnson now to fill that roster spot. Another low risk, high reward type of guy? A guy like Scott Baker might be an interesting name even though he hasn't pitched much of the last two years

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 07:42 PM) Santiago is not going anywhere Why wouldnt he?

Been rabid for some White Sox offseason action. Santiago, Beckham, and Reed are gone is my guess.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) A lot of people have given up on Phegley which I find really hard to comprehend. He didn't set the world on fire in his trial with the Sox but he's the closest thing the Sox have to a long term solution which seems to be the key words I keep hearing. He didn't take walks, he flailed away at a lot of bad pitches but he still struck out 15% less than Flowers ,is 2 years younger, and had a very good year in the minors. I think any lefthanded or switch hitting catcher at this point makes sense for the Sox. Sure we'd like him to be a possible long term solution or have some pop , OBP skills or be a defensive whiz but every catcher out there seems to have issues. You can still build a competitive team without having any sort of permanent solution or a platoon at some positions. If or when the Sox get a LH hitting catcher there won't be much point in whing about it because the pickings are slim. There's much more talent at other positions to spend money on . When Matt Weiters wants a Mauer type contract it just tells you how desperate teams are for catching. While I don't think he will be anything special, I am semi-surprised so many people are jumping off the Phegley ship so soon as well

Reinsdorf on Score....there's still money in the budget

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) You have the Sox contending in 2014? I think they can definitely be competitive with another move or two. -
QUOTE (scs787 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) And why is that? The problem with Weiters is, while yes, he is a switch hitter, but he is much better as a RH hitter vs LHP. Over the last 3 years he's hit just .225/.289/.382 against RHP, which we all know the Sox face a lot of. You sign Salty with the hopes that he continues to hit RHP like he did last year(.294/.350/.523). Never sign someone based on a career year, his numbers otherwise shout regression to the mean
-
All good points. I think you do it if you can get him extended, but at this juncture I'm still most interested in the Rosario whispers. Wieters is a decent second option, I'd definitely like that more than Salty.

QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) Good player, but not a fit for the Sox where they are right now. Definite fit, not sure how he wouldn't be?

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 10, 2013 -> 07:26 PM) Wilin Rosario is a popular name these days... That, in addition to the Abreu signing, would have me very excited for next season.

Sox likely to be quiet in free agency after Abreu
Dunt replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 31, 2013 -> 03:44 PM) Needs more than Abreu to do what? Compete this year? I don't think there's enough out there in FA to make that happen, and if next year's FA class is better, then wait for it. I like next years class much more than this year. If the Sox can somehow swing a trade for Brett Lawrie with the Jays, I would be extremely happy with the product they are putting on the field next year. There wasn't much in this free agent class I wanted besides Abreu though, I think McCann is a nice player, but grossly overhyped and will get grossly overpaid. -
Did he slim down at all?
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 08:35 PM) http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/201...3-carlos-rodon/ Per Baseball America Says 2014 class best since 2011. I know there is still a long way to go here, but if you drafted today, would you take Turner or Gatewood?
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 11:33 AM) Keith Law's Insider reaction piece essentially says that this is a weird move for the White Sox because it's risky and that Abreu has a good chance of declining rapidly by the time the Sox are contending in a few years. Keith Law is a dumbass
-
QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 18, 2013 -> 08:26 AM) This, in the 'Bad Dream' Department..... Abreu signs, is added to the 40 man roster, and starts out in either Birmingham or Charlotte after spring training. Not happening, he will be opening day 1st basemen

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 11:52 PM) Alright about to go play GTA and then hit the hay. Nugget: One of the Agencies who have been in touch "informally" with the Sox fairly recently has been ACES. Do some research and you can probably get some names. Finally...Chone Figgin will be part of the Sox! Kenny always gets his man!

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 11:45 PM) Before I go to bed ill share a juicy nugget on the board, its pretty general. Can you just post it now? I wanna just not sleep the entire night now

I liked the Kepp signing originally, but learned to hate him as the season progressed. That said, I dont think he is as bad as he was this season.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 11:01 PM) Actually helps us in the market IMO. Keep an eye on high-contact scrappy players, I know it sucks but I think mgmt thinks they have the power at this point. I hope it's high OBP and not just hit contact rate guys. Keppinger was a high contact rate guys as well right?

This has me so fired up for the rest of this offseason now, Hahn has some real room to get creative now
