Past, present, and future: Frank, Paulie, and Abreu

I don't know if I should be psyched or mortified that the Sox are willing to spend $20 million on a guy that hadn't thrown a major league pitch
-
@BNightengale - 2m - The #Dodgers, while confirming their interest in Tanaka, say they won't spend wildly on him, particularly with Kershaw about to hit FA

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 8, 2014 -> 11:39 AM) Maybe that moves us to .0001% chance. So you're saying there's a chance?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 29, 2013 -> 08:21 PM) 26. Minnesota Twins — The Twins won 66 games in 2013 but help is on the horizon. They have one of the best Minor League systems around and it’s only a matter of time before the Twins are fielding a lineup with Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton. But this off-season, the Twins signed Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, and Mike Pelfrey to multi-year deals totaling $84 million. Years ago, the trio might have been deemed underrated, but each has been in the league long enough to establish a track record, and each has failed to live up to expectations. The Twins are essentially gambling $84 million for them to, at once, realize their potential. The Twins could have instead used this money to try to get Masahiro Tanaka and more cheaply gamble on players like Josh Johnson (now with the Padres). http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/...partner=ya5nbcs Wow, the Sox didnt make their top 5 best offseasons but the Tigers, Tampa Bay, and St Louis did? What?

Could really use another Sox move or two this week to get my mind off that Bears game

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) I was under the impression one of our MI would be gone replaced with a vet. This was before the whole Davidson thing went down though. Fingers crossed he still is

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 04:25 PM) Then we will have to worry about the league having made adjustments to them, but them not adjusting to the league. That's why you see sophomore slumps. Besides, guys like Beckham, Rowand, and Crede have given all of us false hope in the past after initially showing great success. You can understand why Sox fans are leery. Oh definitely, the trademark Sox fan pessimism is understandable and well documented. Guess I am just very excited for these players to be in White Sox uniforms.
-
I think the whole youth adjustment thing is slightly overblown. Ya, you definitely plan for an adjustment period, but these guys have mostly had a taste at this point and there are plenty of examples around the majors of under 25 year old players make big impacts.

I realize a lot of these acquisitions need to pan out for this to be a good team, but looking at this team in it's current state, I am incredibly optimistic that they can atleast be a playoff contender next season. We still have one of the best pitching staffs in the AL and have shored up pretty much everywhere besides catcher in the field. I dont think this will be anywhere near a 90-99 loss team next season and I dont think the Central will be as strong this season. I like the moves KC has made this offseason, but they still have almost no starting pitching. I think Detroit has actually taken a step backwards losing Fielder, Fister, Infante, Benoit, and Veras. Why not next season?

Who hits from the left side if Hahn trades Dunn, De Aza, and Gillespie? Eaton who you are hitting at the top of the order and who? -
All he would take is a package like Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman, and another A prospect. Lulz.

Im guessing Jones starts the season as closer, then Lindstrom, and the season will finish with Webb as closer

I wonder what this means for the Charlotte squad? Start Semien at SS and Sanchez at 2B? I see Semien stepping in for Beckham before Sanchez is ready but I would hate to see either hinder each others playing time. This offseason has me very excited, all these acquisitions and a 3rd overall pick. Lineup is looking something like: Eaton Beckham/Semien Abreu Dunn Garcia Davidson Viciedo Ramirez Phegley/Flowers -

Rick Hahn is a f*cking BEAST! -
Interesting nugget on MLBTR this morning: The White Sox are looking to cut their payroll from just under $119MM in 2013 to between $89MM-$99MM range for 2014, ESPN Chicago's Doug Padilla writes, with the $99MM figure being the likelier of the two. Despite the cuts on the Major League side, GM Rick Hahn said the club will reinvest the saved money into extra spending on the draft and international signings. That is the first time I've seen the $99MM figure thrown out there. Is there another acquisition coming up shortly or is that for the draft? I was under the impression that the ~$84MM included the draft before.

Wow, who cares what he says his goals are? I'm glad he's confident and I think he'll kill it. Is a .400 OBP ambitious? You bet. Will I be ecstatic if he actually does it? You bet your ass I will be -
