Is a 4 year deal really that long for a first time FA? I don’t think so. 6+ I start to agree more with your sentiments. Locking up your own guys early are sound investments no doubt. It’s too bad they don’t have a legit body they could do that with in RF instead of wasting assets & dollars on stop gaps, retreads, or playing guys woefully out of position.

I can’t argue with your points, they are sound and logical. But if this team wants to win in this big spending large market world they have to sign quality free agents at some point. The internal options available don’t put this team in a better spot to win, and wasting money around the edge on stop gaps won’t either.

As badly as they misplayed that one, we are talking 4 years here and not 8 to 10. And they don’t even want to go 4 with an out after 2. Does not compute to me.

They waste enough year in and year out on the periphery that it would be easy to find that cash if they wanted to.

He’s 29 not 32. If you’re worried about a free agent declining at the back end when most guys don’t hit FA until 28-30, then you’ll never sign a FA long term. Some risks are worth taking when there is no one in the system close that can adequately fill the gaping RF hole.

Hence saying year 1 salary. Kimbrel won’t be here beyond this year and other dollars come off the books. There are ways to make it work.
