Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming NFL Season. I've got the Bears with nine wins which could get them a wild card spot. Schedule is very tough and the questions on defense and many and varied. I don't think they did enough to shore that side of the ball up. Losing Bryant hurt badly.

It would be nuts to have Castillo pitch against them unless I guess, the Sox were to win the first two games of the series.

It's interesting someone posted about "owning" everything. That is precisely the reason why JR didn't want anything outside of the park itself. He wanted all revenue streams to be coming from the park itself and going to him.

Four factoids today: September 8, 1960 – You have to respect the man’s beliefs at least. Veteran pitcher Al Worthington was acquired from the Red Sox on August 29 to help with the stretch run of the season. On this date he left the White Sox, stating that he couldn’t play for a team that cheated. Worthington, a devoutly religious person, had heard rumors the Sox were stealing signs via a flashing light in the scoreboard relaying the upcoming pitch to hitters, and when manager Al Lopez wouldn’t confirm or deny the charge, Worthington left. He remained in the organization playing in the minor leagues the next two years before the Reds selected him in the rule five Major League draft in November 1962. From 1964 through 1969 he became one of the best relief pitchers in the American League with the Minnesota Twins saving 102 games and winning 42 more. In his short stint with the White Sox he appeared in four games with a 1-1 record and a 3.38 ERA. September 8, 1962 - Sox pitcher and future Hall of Famer Early Wynn won his 299th career game beating Washington 6-3. Wynn would throw a complete game scattering nine hits with three strikeouts. He would get a spring training invite for 1963 but was cut. Fortunately, the Indians, the team Wynn pitched for earlier in his career, picked him up and he got the coveted 300th win on July 13 when he beat Kansas City 7-4 on the road. It was his last win in the Major Leagues. September 8, 1993 - Sox pitcher Jason Bere tied a 73-year-old White Sox rookie record, with 13 strikeouts over eight innings of an 8-1 win against Boston. Bere tied righthander Frank Lange, who had a fairly brief run with the White Sox in the early 1910s. September 8, 2022 - Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada did something that had never been done before in the American League as part of a 14-2 rout by the club over the A’s in Oakland. Moncada went 5 for 5 with five RBI’s for the second time in the season which had never happened in the league since RBI’s became an official statistic in 1920. He had two home runs and a double among his hits and finished the game with 12 total bases. He did it the first time on June 15 against the Tigers when he went 5 for 6 with five RBI’s. Also happening in the game were back-to-back home runs leading the game off by the White Sox. Elvis Andrus and Moncada both went deep off of J.P. Sears to start the rout.

Absolutely. It's unfortunate that JR won't allow them to pay the price for premium pitching.

I reached out to Tim Wrightman this morning, the Bears TE on that team. He said that Matt had dementia and that led to his death. Very sad to hear that.

Three factoids today: September 7, 1954 - One of the lynchpins of the famed Sox pitching staff of the late 1950's, Dick Donovan was acquired from Atlanta in the minor leagues. Dick would win 73 games in six seasons on the South Side including a pair of one-hitters and be named to the All-Star team in 1955. September 7, 1960 - In a game at Comiskey Park infielder Sammy Esposito booted a cinch double play ball hit by future Sox infielder Bill “Moose” Skowron, with the Sox leading in the eighth inning, 4-1. That lead quickly evaporated as the Yankees rallied for four runs and an evnetual 6-4 win. Willie Harris and his friend, Jesse James (I swear I'm not making the names up) had a wager on the game. When Esposito blew the ground ball Harris took matters into his own hands. He jumped over the box seat railing, ran on to the field, had words with the player then the two started throwing punches. It took several uniformed police officers and ushers to pull Harris off of Esposito. Harris left the field shouting that he was “A real Sox fan.” September 7, 1970 - The White Sox were swept by the A’s in a Monday doubleheader at Comiskey Park, in front of 6,115 fans. As the losses dropped Chicago to 49-92 on the season, the sweep was not remarkable. But what was? With September’s expanded rosters, the Pale Hose used 13 players and five pitchers in the 7-4 opening loss, and 16 players and seven pitchers in the 7-5 nightcap loss. The 41 total players in a doubleheader set a Major League record for the time (it has since been broken.)

To say the Sox may be trying to help a player with some type of retirement benefit during this crucial part of the season is stretching things to an almost ridiculous limit. It does happen of course, especially with coaches trying to get their time in and are hired by managers who are their friends and I can even see it happening at some point during a season for a team either out of contention or early in the year but not now with what the Sox are looking at. I actually had to read the comment twice to make sure I didn't misunderstand it.

And of course a great trivia question... May, may be the only player to have his birthday on the back of his uniform as he was born on "May 17th!"

I think no 100 loss team has even posted a winning record in the following year either in MLB history. Unless the Sox completely fall apart I think they should at least be able to get to 82 wins.

According to Jeff Agrest of the Sun-Times: "Outfielder Tommy Pham has one at-bat in one game with the White Sox since being acquired Aug. 31, but the team put him on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strained left calf. Pham’s IL stint is retroactive to Sept. 3, the day after he appeared as a pinch hitter."

Like I wrote last month it's going to come down to the end. In that respect the Sox may have an advantage Detroit, Kansas City, Colorado the last 10 games. Seven of the 10 are at home. That doesn't discount though what takes place in the 10 days or so before that especially if either the Sox or Cleveland go on a run or fall apart. Another thing that could play a factor is playoff experience. Cleveland has made the post season seven of the last 10 years. I don't know how many of their current roster has been through the wars to get into that position compared to the Sox roster.
