Five factoids today: July 20, 1941 - Slick fielding Sox first baseman Joe Kuhel tied a Major League record set in 1905 by recording 40 putouts in a double header against the Philadelphia Athletics. Kuhel recorded 17 putouts in the first game and 23 in the second one. The Sox split the two games played at Shibe Park winning the first 14-0 and losing the nightcap 3-0. July 20, 1957 - The Sox Dick Donovan one-hit the Red Sox at Comiskey Park and won 4-0. Ted Williams got Boston’s only hit on a single to right in the fourth inning. It was Donovan’s second one-hitter in two months. On May 25 he one-hit the Indians in Cleveland winning by the same score of 4-0. July 20, 1973 - Wilbur Wood started both regularly scheduled games in New York. He became only the fourth pitcher in the modern era to try this feat. Unfortunately, he got beat around twice, losing both decisions 12-2 and 7-0. Earlier in the season he started the suspended game and a regularly scheduled game in Chicago beating Cleveland twice in the same evening 6-3 and 4-0. July 20, 1975 – Two years later, however, Wilbur Wood capped off a super-hot streak with a third straight win and sixth straight complete game, winning a doubleheader opener vs. Milwaukee, 9-2. Wood had also won games on July 13 and 17, meaning he threw 27 innings with three complete game wins in the space of a week. The first two wins were shutouts versus the Brewers and Tigers. July 20, 2008 – Future Hall of Famer Jim Thome collected his 2,000th Major League hit as he doubled in the seventh inning at U.S. Cellular Field. The hit came off the Royals Ramon Ramirez. Thome would finish his career with 2,328 of them, 469 as a member of the White Sox.

It absolutely is a generational thing.

Not "proud" at all. I enjoy what I enjoy. Don't need to waste my time on things that I don't care for. I've got everything from ABBA to ZZ Top on the computer. Have 400 vinyl albums and about 400 45 RPM singles including some valuable ones from the Beatles and Elvis. Like I wrote, I'm perfectly fine with what I've got and enjoy. I've traveled with athletic teams for decades including up to this past March, I've heard enough of the music they are listening to, to know it's not my style.

There's not a lot of people on the planet with the athletic ability to throw a baseball 95+ with control. If there was they wouldn't be getting the money they make. And agree completely that pitchers get injured a lot more this year for various reasons that experts have been discussing for several seasons which is why the adage "you can never have enough pitching" rings true. So when you come across pitching, good pitching you need to hang on to it regardless of cost especially if they are younger. And I've preached for years today you need six, maybe seven competent starters because someone is going to get hurt or slump. In 1983 the Sox had seven starting pitchers on the roster who won at least 10 games in a big league season. Man to have that depth today.

Just about a perfect day... Sox won, Guardians lost, Twins lost, Tigers lost, Brewers won. Unfortunately it had to take a Cubs win to hand Minnesota their loss but you can't have everything.

We'll see how it eventually plays out. To those who say he had no place to play, he's a shortstop by trade. Acuna could have easily been DFA'd. Nothing wrong with having that kind of talent on the bench maybe starting two games a week. A lot is going to depend on how good Thome's kid turns out to be.

It happens... so the alternative is to not do it and lose quality pitchers because of the injury risk factor? Again it may be fiscally sound but as stated other teams don't have the same reservations which puts the Sox at a big disadvatage. If I'm still around it will be interesting to see what Ishbia's policies are regarding contracts, free agency et al.

It's still pretty incredible how fast he completely fell apart.

You know you're getting old when you don't recognize a single solitary song post either by the song itself or the recording group. Just based on some of the titles it appears I'm not missing much if anything.

JR's policy may very well be correct as far as 'fiscal responsibility' (his words) is concerned. The problem is very few of the other MLB teams subscribe to it which puts the White Sox at a disadvantage.

Hagan Smith was promoted to Triple A Charlotte. Let's see if he can stay healthy.

In essence they did because they weren't going to pay him given JR's standing philosophy. You can discuss if that is a good thing or not but it's a fact other teams don't seem to have those misgivings.

Burke has been on a serious roll for over a month now. Should the Sox get into the post season he and Martin could give them a nice one-two punch. Of course you need more than that which is why I hope they can bolster the pitching staff at the deadline. Offense is still hot/cold. Romo has got to go, he's not getting it done at all. Bring back Quero or bring up Lee. Let's see what they can do Monday night against a very tough pitcher. 30 more wins for a winning season.
