Right now, the Sox bench consists of Saladino, one of Navarro/Avila, and Jerry Sands. Teams generally carry 4 bench players in lieu of the extra reliever we carry, and I think that our need for an outfielder who can play defense (given Sands'/Garcia's incompetence) or an infielder who can play 2B off the bench will force our hand.
The candidates:
-Jason Bourgeois: speedy, versatile outfielder/second baseman/shortstop hitting .397 in 131 AAA at-bats this year. Has been around in the Majors (including with us).
-Jason Coats: outfielder with a decent bat, although this move would probably come at the expense of Sands
-Matt Davidson: power hitter who isn't as bad as he usually is this year, although this would probably come at the expense of Sands as well
-Nick Delmonico: another DH candidate, but he was just promoted to AAA recently
-Leury Garcia: versatile, speedy utilityman, but a very poor hitter with unexciting stolen base numbers (Adam Engel could even be better in a pure pinch runner role)
-Danny Hayes: LH hitting 1B/DH who is hitting quite well for Charlotte
-Jacob May: speedy switch-hitting outfielder
-Carlos Sanchez: often up in the Majors, but still young and could benefit from regular AB's in AAA
-JB Shuck: LH outfielder hitting well for Charlotte, was decent for us in the Majors last year
