QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 10:25 PM) i never thought of that ... interesting thought process. how bout Daniel Fields-cf the sox got. Fields defense looks good but his bat leaves a whole lot to be desired. I'd take my chances with May over Fields any time.

The irony is that fans want to interact with athletes on Twitter and then become butt-hurt if the athelete says something the fans don't agree with or mis-interpret. Athletes, like fans, have an equal right to say what's on their minds and nobody is being forced to "follow" anyone.

I still think the Sox trade for an outfielder so who's left? Bruce, Jennings, Ethier, Crawford, Guyer, Gardner, one of the Astros outfielders. I'm really curious to see if the Sox stick with their desire for a LHB or are they open to a RHB now that Fowler is signed. I still cling to some hope for Jackson but I get the feeling that the Sox are thinking 1-2 years for Jackson while Boras/Jackson are looking for more. I'm just guessing here and really have no idea if the Sox even have interest in Jackson. The price might still be high considering the Rangers had a need for a RH OF bat and signed a career SS to play LF for them and they gave up a pick. With Boras reputation, I wouldn't be surprised if the price is still high. Which leads me back to the idea of the Sox trading for an OF or (gulp), stick with what they have. Unless the Sox genuinely feel Jacob May could be ready to be the backup CF at some point this season.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 04:35 PM) I find it hard to believe David Freese is still looking for work with the shortage of 3B in the league. He is not the greatest but has put up over a 2.0 WAR the last couple of years. His price has to be pretty reasonable at this point. I'm surprised as well. I was thinking to myself that Freese would sign with Cleveland but they with Uribe instead. I would have taken Freese over Uribe but I imagine Cleveland went with the cheaper option in Uribe.

Watch those Twitter rumors, they'll suck you in. No offense to milbelt, but hasn't he been way off base on more than one occasion this winter? Grain of salt... -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 05:42 PM) Based on Hahn's comments it sounds like it. Granted you can only take that with a grain of salt until something actually gets done. Yep. I don't think Hahn would publically say something if he didn't think he could add someone. We'll see what happens.

Things are finally heating up for Jackson. The Halos made an offer, Cleveland just lost their CF, Baltimore took a big one up the chili-hole from Fowler and the Sox are still looking for an outfielder.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 03:32 PM) Did Chad Croger make you pop a boner again or something? I took it as a warning. Just say no to Nickelback! Nickelback is bad, MMMKay!

The battle for shortstop - applying some odds

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) Rollins - 10% Saladino - 8% Anderson - 1% Sanchez - 1% Beckham - 80% Nice! As long as Rollins and Saladino are healthy I don't think Anderson and Sanchez have much of a shot so for me, it comes down to Rollins/Saladino. I think both will be on the opening day 25 man roster but I have no idea who starts opening day or what roles they will be used in. I do know that I'm going to have fun watching them both in ST games. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:20 AM) and for me, i will judge this in, is he better than Avi in the OF, defensively?? i will let those posters who are really good with the advance stats to figure this out. At this point, yes, Venable is definitely better than Avi defensively. Venable has been declining with the bat and glove the last few years which happens with outfielders his age (33). The Sox didn't miss out on anything.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:34 AM) It is 1/$8M with a "mutual option" for the second year and a $5M buyout. Most don't see a scenario where both Fowler and the Cubs want that mutual option, so it's effectively a 1/$13 deal. Yeah, makes more sense now and thanks for setting me straight on it. Definitely an oversight on my part. My morning coffee has not been as effective as it usually is so I blame the coffee.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/02/cubs...ter-fowler.html This has been what I've been basing my posts off of this morning and its my fault for not looking further into it. After looking at BR, I see Fowler signed for 13M so again, apologies for my confusion.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:27 AM) 13M is more than 11M, so that isn't true. Now I see the confusion and its my fault. The blurb I was reading said Fowler had signed a 1/8M for '16. Apologies to all for my confusion.
-
QUOTE (shysocks @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:24 AM) This directly conflicts with your previous statement that it was never about the money. What are you arguing? I'm not arguing, just pointing out its not just about the money. As I've been saying, Fowler took less money to stay with the Cubs instead of signing with the Orioles. I don't understand the confusion.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:22 AM) It's nonsense though. He'd rather play for the Cubs this season and become a free agent again, possibly landing a better 3-4 deal next offseason than taking the Orioles firm 3 year offer. I agree and that's what Ive been saying. If the Baltimore rumors are true, Fowler took 3M less to play for the cubs.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:15 AM) If Fowler has a good year, then opts out, he could blow that 3/33M deal out of the water next offseason. He's taking a chance on himself to make more money in the future. Just like Heyward. Would he have signed the same deal with the Reds? No. But it's still about the money in the long run. I agree and pretty much said the same thing in a previous post. Fowler is betting on himself this year to lineup a payday next year all the while getting another chance at the post season. Imo, Fowler taking a mere 8M this year speaks volumes, he easily could have gotten much more elsewhere and yet he still chose the cubs.

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 08:20 AM) maybe it is nothing or could be something. i am going to take this at face value and say, good for cle to allow Venable the area to get in shape until his contract is serrle. Venable is likely at the Indians camp taking his physical and now the Indians are waiting for the results before they make the official announcement. To me it doesn't matter either way since I don't really have any interest in Venable anyway.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:00 AM) you make an excellent point, however whether it is 1 mil or 5 mil on the table, i think most players will go for the money. now there are some who would rather go for the ability to go the playoff. but those players are long in the tooth and want one final go around with a team that will make the playoff. but think about it, 1 million+ dollars ???? If the Baltimore rumors are true, then this was never about money for Fowler. Baltimore's offer was supposedly for 3/33M and yet Fowler signed a 1/8M with an option for 1/9M + 5M buyout next year. Fowler took considerably less money to re-sign with the Cubs. He said " this is where my heart is" and considering he signed for less, in this case, it's true that it wasn't about the money.

QUOTE (MDWhiteSoxFan @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) On the other hand Terry Collins allowed Yo to smoke in the dug out... Collins knows better than to get between a smoker and their nic fix.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 08:23 AM) Only way a team was getting him is if they offered something like 3/45, in my opinion To be honest, I'm not sure that would have been enough to lure Fowler away from a playoff contender and world series favorite. I definitely think, in Fowler's case, it's about more than just money. If I were in his shoes, I would have wanted to return to the cubs too.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 01:39 AM) There has been progress, ever since the RBI program started we've seen more black players drafted than any time in recent memory. The lack of black fathers has something to do with it and another thing that contributes to it is that black people don't feel welcome when it comes to baseball, because the vast majority of us feel like our culture is not welcomed. Look at this: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseba...-his-hat-around You're a black player and when you do something 'not white' you're told to stop. Good grief, Collins needs to shut up about the backwards hat. That's just too pretentiously nit-picky. It's ST, who cares! Then again, I'm not surprised. I've had people from the generation before me give me a hard time for wearing my hat backwards and I've been wearing my hat backwards since the late 70's/early 80's when I was a kid. If the sun is out I wear it the usual way to shield my eyes ( ginger's don't like sunlight ) but otherwise, I prefer it backwards and always have. Society is too wrapped up with what is socially accepted as the 'proper' way of doing things. I appreciate your insight from an African American's point of view on Baseball. It's amazing how far society/baseball has come and yet still has a long way to go when it comes to accepting the cultures of others. When will people learn? I think Rollins, Anderson and Saladino should all wear their hats backwards and make a statement.
