  1. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 12:28 PM) What makes you think they are making a bunch of 1B/DH types? If anything, the system had a lack of that depth just a year ago. Let's look at the 1B/DH guys in the system that even remotely qualify as worth noting: --Andy Wilkins, who has been a 1B for a long time. He was a 3B, and is supposedly a good defensive 1B. He's a fringe prospect. --Rangel Ravelo has a serious bat, also a 3B convert and therefore likely to get pretty good at 1B defensively. --Keon Barnum has been a 1B/DH power guy all along and has serious raw power. And that's it. Who are you talking about? He's not really a prospect, but another guy that fits that bill is Dan Black.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) They're allowed to do a one-game callup that doesn't hit the 40 man. But Hahn said no to Rodon. My suggestion, since the Sox are not competing anyway: Matt Zaleski. He's the only pitcher - ever, as far as I can tell - to play 11 seasons in just one organization and never make the majors. And he's actually been decent in AAA. Give him a start, save the MLB arms. I'm all for this.
  3. I just wanted to add that I'm also a huge Recchia fan. I think he's definitely a legit prospect. He shouldn't be discounted due to his age or his indy ball background. I don't know a ton about Hansen, but he's huge, was a fairly early pick, and has good strikeout numbers at age appropriate levels. There's potential there. I wouldn't label him as organizational filler by any means.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 07:47 AM) They've got a DH coming up and can add one extra player for that day - might be a good opportunity if they were ever going to do that. That'd be a classy move by the organization, and one I'd love to see. We're not winning anything this year anyway, why not do it?
  5. QUOTE (peavy44 @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) Tim Anderson has too many errors i dont think he is. He's too young and too far away from the majors to use the errors he's making now as a reason why he won't be our SS in the future. His bat is too good to ignore; we can only hope he continues to improve his glove as he moves through the minors. I've heard good things about Anderson's athleticism defensively so it appears the potential for improvement is there. Micah's no gold glover either, but that doesn't stop people from pegging him as the future 2B. I said it before, but we need to find a way to fuse Anderson and Rondon into one player. Seriously, get on this science.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:51 PM) I'd guess right now it's 60/40 in favor of Micah Johnson, with many thinking of Semien as a platoon partner with Gillaspie, PR and fill-in at 2B, SS and LF. Probably true, but I've noticed many people mention their concerns with Micah's defense and considered that when I made my comment. A number of people want him to move to CF.
  7. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:51 PM) For those talking about how we had a chance to see Semien earlier this year, let's not ignore the fact that he only had 142 PAs in AAA prior to his brief major league stint. Clearly he wasn't ready for the majors and was only up due to Beckham's injury. Drawing too many conclusions from those limited at-bats is quite short-sighted IMO. I didn't say that it was enough to draw any conclusions from, but the fact is we did see him for a bit and now with Sanchez's bounce back the organization wants to take a look at him.
  8. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:53 PM) See, I don't agree with this. Sanchez gets that tag because he has put up an empty batting average up until this year. Semien has proven he can walk a ton and slug at a decent clip. That isn't a utility player, just because he can play multiple positions. I like the Ben Zobrist comp. Just to be clear, I wasn't actually saying Semien is a utility guy. I think more of him than that.
  9. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:51 PM) Yes, he's still one of the youngest players in AAA at 22 and he's putting up an OPS+ of 110 with solid defense. I think he's almost criminally under rated as a prospect because (Rick Hahn voice) progress isn't always linear and he took a step back before taking a big step forward this year. I too am shocked at how quickly people discount Sanchez. I really don't get it.
  10. I don't think many, if any, people are sleeping on Semien. In fact, he seems to be the consenus board favorite for 2B of the future. If nothing else, Semien is thought highly of by many. If anything, people are sleeping on Sanchez. People act as if he's some slouch when that's not the case at all. It seems like people's love for Semien is clouding their judgment on Sanchez. I said this in the Beckham trade thread, but I'll repeat it here: We got a good look at Semien earlier in the season, now we're going to see what Sanchez has to offer. Besides, Semien will be up in like a week and a half anyway. Sanchez is young, had a good bounce back season in AAA, and showed by far the most pop of his career. Perhaps there's more power potential there than initially thought; his body is filling out now afterall. We'll know who's better based on who wins the job out of spring training. For now, let's give Sanchez a chance. He certainly deserves it.
  11. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:27 PM) I don't think he has the range this team needs...it's a ground ball staff (and that's not changing) and too much gets through. I agree that he's a good platoon hitter. (and you know you're a platoon hitter when Flowers pinch hits for you). That's why I'm thinking LF....he should be able to play OF if he can play 3B. I'm not giving up on Davidson. I just don't give up on talented young players after 1 bad year. I would also like to see Gillaspie try to expand his versatility by playing LF. Ditto Ravelo.
  12. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:30 PM) Semien has been fine at Charlotte overall, and has been crushing it the past month. He's ready. So what do we do? We call up the utility guy... I don't think it's fair to label Sanchez as merely a utility guy. The utility label could just as easily be applied to Semien. Sanchez is young, had a good bounce back season in AAA, and showed by far the most pop of his career. Perhaps there's more power potential there than initially thought; his body is filling out now afterall. I think he can be an above average starter at 2B and perhaps average at SS. Not to discount Semien at all, but we got a look at him earlier in the season. Now let's see what Sanchez has before they battle it out in ST. Besides, Semien will be up in a little over a week anyway.
  13. QUOTE (TRU @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:49 PM) And yet, no one can back up any reason as to why Davidson wasn't ready. Based on what he did in Arizona last season, and then his .308/.341/.564/.906 slash line from spring training, I am suppose to buy into him not being ready? Sorry, that's not good enough. Now I will wait patiently for the next textbook soxtalk poster to tell me that on a board that has greg constantly posting, I am posting some of the most illogical stuff you've seen. Putting aside those small sample sizes of his play during his September call-up with the D'Backs and during spring training, an entire season's worth of futility in AAA is more than enough proof that he wasn't/isn't ready to be a full-time ML player. Your entire argument is based on "we don't know how he would have performed had he been with the ML team from the get-go." Well, based on his play in AAA, it probably would have been horrid. Your blatant disregard for Gillaspie and his "two month hot streak"as you called it is ironic given all the hoops you're willing to jump through to defend Davidson. Davidson has the higher ceiling, but Gillaspie is far and away the better player and there's a decent chance he always will be. You bought into Davidson's hype as a prospect and therefore anything Gillaspie did would not have been good enough in your eyes.
  14. QUOTE (TRU @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) Yes, totally joking. I forgot that at communist soxtalk people don't discuss when they don't agree with you they just make wise ass one liners and try to be cute. Not as cute as that kitty in your avatar. "Meow."
  15. QUOTE (TRU @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) lol, Gillaspie is not a starting position player at the MLB level. Get his two month hot streak out of your head, jesus. No one knows how Davidson would have played had he started in Chicago, so your argument that he wouldn't have been ready is just as "illogical" as me thinking getting sent back to AAA didn't have something to do with him struggling, even if its not the only reason. And Davidson is not a starting position player at the AAA level, apparently.
  16. QUOTE (TRU @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:35 PM) Nope. This was a 99 loss team, there was no reason for a guy like Gillaspie to be starting at 3B for this team. Davidson was ready and played well in his call up with Arizona the season before. Just because it "worked out" doesn't make it the right move. Gillaspie is worthless to this team, and he will never be on a Sox playoff team. Davidson should have been up here from the get go. Instead, they shipped him to AAA when he shouldnt have been and that to me seems like the biggest reason for his struggles as most of his stats line up with what he did in the minors before. What the...
  17. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 06:58 PM) Those people are just sad, I'm sorry, its embarrassing. I know every fan base has those fans but ugh. From Facebook: Lorraine Thompson-Winenger WHAT???? That's right....trade one of your BEST players!! #DumbMove
  18. Hahn: trade was about creating opportunity for young players. Carlos Sanchez gets the call tomorrow. Marcus Semien after rosters expand. Sanchez it is. Fine be me. We got a decent look at Semien earlier in the season, now let's see what Sanchez brings to the table. The real battle will be in ST.
  19. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 01:08 AM) We live close to the Peoria and Camelback stadiums. It was a nice night so we decided to check out the Summer league for the first time. Is there anyone on that team with some potential? We did see one player who DH and listed as a catcher park one. That was Jose Barraza. His numbers are pretty decent, but from what I understand he's a work in progress behind the plate. I believe he missed most of last season due to injury. The two biggest names on that team are Micker Adolfo and Spencer Adams. Tim Anderson and Francellis Montas are rehabbing there, too.
  20. I have no confidence in Leury doing anything positive here.
  21. I can't think of a question that hasn't already been posted, but I'm looking forward to this interview. It should be very interesting. I hope he continues to perform well, I'll definitely be rooting for him.
  22. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) I'd be perfectly happy with a 6 man rotation in September. Maybe Rodon gets four starts. 9-6 at Cleveland 9-12 vs Minnesota 9-19 at Tampa Bay 9-25 vs Kansas City Two home. Two away. Forget that bullpen horses***. I have tickets for the 12th, so I'm crossing my fingers that you're right.
