  1. Ozzie was getting a lot of love on ESPN today from Sutcliffe and Gwynn for the way he had the Marlins running the bases aggressively. and he's been telling the Florida media he would like the job In many ways, it makes sense, especially if the Sox are keeping everybody but Kimm on the payroll
  2. not sure Gillick has the personality to work with Steinbrenner. But Cashman will be a goner -- especially if the Yankees lose to the Contraction Twins.
  3. Bob Nightengale, who allegedly talks with Kenny Williams on occasion and praises him often in print, throws three new names into the discussion in the new issue of USA Today sports weekly: 1. Paul Molitor 2. George Brett 3. Robin Yount I believe Molly and Yount are coaching somewhere. Think Brett is in the front office with the Royals. Have a hard time imagining Brett doing it. But Molitor usually gets good reviews and was mentioned as a possibility with the Twinkies if Gardenhire had bombed. Not sure about Yount. Just throwing it out there. Nightengale also includes Buddy Bell and Cito Gaston on his list -- but not Ozzie Guillen
  4. Sox fans win!!! Sox fans win!!!! Sox fans win!!!!
  5. What I really like about Gillick is he has standards he won't compromise he got out of Balty when he saw what direction management was taking that club and now that Seattle management has failed to spend down the stretch for two straight seasons, he knows the run is over there. That club is ready to plunge. Cameron, McLemore and Rhodes are all free agents. Edgar might retire. They can't wait to get Garcia outta town. That's a place that led the AL in attendance and they're awfully conservative with their spending.
  6. International ball probably will be tough for him, considering this is his first full pro season. The experience of seeing more new pitchers has to help, regardless of the stats he posts. My concern about the Kotsay comparisions is that Kotsay has already started to decline. His strikeouts have been above 80 the last two seasons. His OBP percentage has declined in consecutive seasons and he's no longer stealing many bases. As an AL guy, I haven't really seen much of Kotsay in the field. Don't really like the comparison game. I'd love to see Reed hit second, take charge in centerfield and be a solid hitter with high walk totals and the ability to steal a strategic base. Not that concerned about HRs. Gap power is fine. I've seen too much feast or famine the last three seasons. More excited about him than I've ever been about Borchard because Borchard's strikeout totals have always been a monstrous alarm.
  7. i'm anxious to see him play -- and to see how he performs for Team USA. Only thing that concerns me is the player he is most often compared to is Mark Kotsay. Kotsay is decent, but nothing truly special. Like to see the Sox have a special centerfielder for a good run.
  8. I hope you are right. we could use a left-handed bat a guy who doesn't strike out much and a guy who can steal bases. Hate to get too excited about a rookie, though, because it's been awhile since the Sox have had a GREAT one
  9. this is shaping up as an October to forget for White Sox fans
  10. Reed, Cotts, Pacheco, Honel and Wing are our best hope for the future -- and I'm skeptical any of the five will be able to assist during 2004.
  11. This column was written before last weekend, I'm certain. And it's just one paragraph in a rundown of many, many teams. And most are planning to CUT, not add, payroll. probably part of a owners' strategy to roll back payroll -- or at least try to.
  12. Seattle is fairly cheap also wouldn't pay Johnson, Griffey, A Rod. that's why Piniella left. probably why Gillick is leaving, too. Bottom line: They ain't going to take on Maggs for $14 million. Other than Yankees and BoSox, not sure who would. Cubs?
  13. Majewski and Wylie are also there, I believe Not sure whom the Sox picked to replace Jeremy Reed, who is playing for Team USA.
  14. winning two out of three against You Know Who -- TWICE
  15. not sure if it is on-line yet. got my Baseball America in the mail today. check www.baseballamerica.com. then columnists for tRacy ringolsby. He outlines alleged salary cuts that a lot of teams are going to make
  16. That's what Tracy Ringolsby, the national baseball writer for the Rocky Mountain News, reports in the latest issue of Baseball America. He sez the $15 million cut has been ordered by Reinsdorf. Of course, he also reports that a number of other clubs have been ordered to cut payroll, too.
  17. The latest Baseball America features Jeremy Reed on the cover as a prospect to make the Top 10 in Southern and Carolina Leagues. Overall, Sox farm system finished in middle of the pack -- 10 Top 10 prospects throughout the minors. As expected, they were shut out in the International League.
  18. the arizona fall league began yesterday. Neil Cotts pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Two hits, two Ks and a single walk. Ryan Hankins, who is learning to catch, singled in his only at bat. I believe they are the only two Sox prospects who played yesterday.
  19. for a million bucks, Fick was bargain piece of crap for atlanta this year
  20. braves better make their move damn quick
  21. for Sox fans, the last three plus weeks have been as bad as it gets
  22. If it's a Cubs/Twins world series, it's the worst nightmare of Planet White Sox.
  23. Braves are worthless They make the Buffalo Bills look like Secretariat Gaggin Dawgs that's why Atlanta fans stay away
  24. And the crowd goes WILD -- ON THE SOUTH SIDE
  25. That's why they're the Team That Lost Four of Six to the Sox
