  1. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jan 25, 2016 -> 05:17 PM) What is the split? I wasn't very clear, my bad. The split is based on where the ball is hit. Just gonna paste it here again for reference: (Avi / MLB) Pull: 88 / 156 Middle: 137 / 126 Oppo: 163 / 106 So MLB hitters last year put up a 156 wRC+ when they pulled the ball, 126 hitting it up the middle, and 106 hitting to the opposite field. Compare this to Avi, who was progressively worse the further to the left he hit. You should really be above 100 in all three of these, because only AB's where contact happened are in the data pool. The fact that Avi put up an 88 when pulling the ball strikes me as weird. Looking at other guys who didn't do so well when they pulled it, that list is real short on power hitters. One of the ways for Avi to improve is to develop that power we've been waiting on, but that will never happen if he doesn't learn to pull it with any authority.
  2. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 25, 2016 -> 02:01 PM) Avi surprisingly had the third highest walk rate among all Sox starters last year. Through May last year he had a .323/.360/.445 slash and was .278/.331/.435 in August. If he can hit like that all year he is fine. It's just the .548, .581, .588 OPS's he put up the other three months that made his year look really bad. The kid is a hard worker. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make great strides this year. I realistically could see him putting up a .280/.330/.460 slash line this year. Yes, I remember well. Half the board was calling him a bright spot in a bad year. The other half was citing his .400 BABIP and warning the first half that it wasn't going to last. Regarding pulling the ball, here are Avi's wRC+ splits vs. MLB last year. Pull: 88 / 156 Middle: 137 / 126 Oppo: 163 / 106 He's just weird.
  3. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 25, 2016 -> 01:41 PM) Young guys Bad baseball players are generally looked down upon on here, if they are on the Sox.
  4. Do not overreact and sign Fowler if Cespedes is gone. Go get Austin Jackson and put 3 major leaguers in the outfield, keep the pick, possibly grab some depth, call it an offseason and try our luck in the toss-up AL.
  5. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) #MysteryTeam is always the biggest threat. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 01:56 PM) Re: Bowden's report of Sox, Mets and Nats being the finalist. I think the Angels are the Sox biggest competition for Yo. I take full credit for knowing this.
  6. QUOTE (Kevtrem @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) If we let this thread get to 300 before Yo signs, I would be ashamed and embarrassed for proud of us all.
  7. This is just all very bad, I need to actually get s*** done at work today.
  8. Great googly moogly, was not expecting that. Giving me heartbeat irregularity despite source's uncertain credibility.
  9. #MysteryTeam is always the biggest threat.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 20, 2016 -> 10:21 AM) http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...ing-up-momentum Cespedes back to Mets momentum increasing "Sign him to a five-year, $120 million contract with a two-year opt-out and a ton of deferred money. Cespedes, 30, could claim victory -- he would get the long-term security he wants and a higher average annual value ($24 million) than Justin Upton ($22.125M). The Mets would win, too -- the five-year term is shorter than Cespedes desires, the deferred money would lower the present-day value of the deal and the opt-out would ensure that the outfielder stays motivated." QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 09:13 PM) Mets fans are crazy on Twitter about Cespedes. Rosenthal has a proposed deal suggestion that I'm sure people will relay as being an actual offer.
  11. There's plenty that's attractive about Jackson, but most of all I agree with those who've emphasized that he doesn't have the pick attached. Desmond, nah. I'd rather just roll with Saladino. He's a league minimum guy we're reasonably sure can provide plus defense in a lineup painfully short on guys like that. We can live with his bat, though less so than if we add Jackson to the outfield than Cespedes.
  12. Didn't read the piece, don't know what the criteria were, but if 10-year attendance decline is a factor, then you're starting the Sox at an unusually high bar for them.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 03:41 PM) "I was told there would be punch and pie" There isn't any.
  14. Don't think I've seen anybody post the terms of the deal, but if I missed it I apologize. Unconfirmed: It's 1 year, $4M guaranteed, mutual option for 2nd year, according to this Fangraphs piece. That's a scoop, as far as I can tell.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 12:50 PM) So, is there a known reason why he just stopped being good 2 years ago? 2014, he had a bad knee and was playing through it. 2015, he was cruising along like his old self until he went into a tailspin the last couple months. I remember wanting the Sox to trade for him at the deadline. His BABIP went from .292 in the first half to .205 in the second half and I'm not sure there's a good reason. I'm not quite ready to stick a fork in him; his contract is relatively attractive; and people want power in the outfield, there it is. The tipping point, however, is I just want a better defender than Bruce. By sticking him out there, you admit you're fine with an outfield full of butchers.
  16. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 12:36 PM) Continually giving up draft picks for minor upgrades isn't the way this organization will sustain success. Fowler would improve the team. Hell, it may even be enough to put this team in contention. But giving up 3 draft picks in the last 2 years with a bad farm system isn't a good recipe. It sucks actually. I can't really disagree. Fowler is not ideal. But the Sox started down a certain path when they acquired Lawrie and advanced further when they acquired Frazier. Going into the season with a role for Avi would be equivalent to turning back.
  17. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 12:19 PM) Is Fowler the best option out there? No. Does he make a solid improvement to this team? Absolutely. If he ends up being the guy, it is somewhat disappointing but lets not act like this isn't a sizable improvement. Think of it this was, if you can't have the top 2, he's the next best option. That may end up being what the Sox are faced with, Fowler or nothing. I would rather have Fowler than Avi + the pick.
  18. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 12:17 PM) So how do you stack your batting order if Fowler is indeed the option? Eaton L Fowler S Abreu R Frazier R Melky S LaRoche L Lawrie R Avila L Saladino R Fowler S Eaton L Abreu R Frazier R LaRoche L Melky S Lawrie R Avila L Saladino R Interesting to note the spots in the batting order where Melky has been best: 1st .287/.349/.404 2nd .284/.331/.412 3rd .338/.375/.513 4th .281/.339/.456 5th .269/.333/.346 6th .253/.303/.345 7th .273/.350/.401 8th .243/.301/.359 9th .297/.338/.408 How would you feel about this lineup? Fowler S Eaton L Cabrera S Abreu R Frazier R LaRoche L Lawrie R Avila L Saladino/Anderson R I don't like batting order splits, samples are too small, too effected by hot/cold streaks. Most of Melky's plate appearances hitting 3rd came in his career year with the Giants. I'd still have Eaton leading off, Frazier 4th, and push either Fowler or Melky down below him.
  19. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 11:58 AM) It's been a long time since the Sox haven't had a position player on the roster for at least 8 consecutive seasons. What a cool bit of trivia. Alexei Ramirez - Paul Konerko - Frank Thomas - Ozzie Guillen - Carlton Fisk - Jerry Hairston - ...? I can get back to 1983. Anybody in 1982? Edit: Hairston is wrong, flavum's on it up there with Squires.
  20. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 11:52 AM) Have we come to a consensus on Rey's parents yet? I know the big reason people say Luke can't be her father is that Jedi aren't supposed to have romantic relationships. But was Luke ever told that? That "rule" never even came up until Episode 2, long before he was born. I suppose Yoda or Obi Wan could have told him but they never really made a point of bringing it up in the original trilogy. I still think she can't be Luke's daughter because it's too damn obvious. Just seems like a red herring to me.
  21. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 11:39 AM) If we do get him I hope his power from last season stays, that his defense can rate OK in RF, and that he returns to his .360 career OBP. It'd be a fine move if it weren't for that damn QO. That's the rub. Given our absolute need for an outfielder I wouldn't hate getting Fowler, but he's not worth the pick like Upton is or Gordon would have been.
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 11:00 AM) Unless he has a bad year, the draft pick compensation shouldn't really complicate Cespedes market. He is good enough that you don't worry about the pick. It is when you get to those guys who are in the 10-15M annual range where I think people think awful hard about going long-term and losing the pick. A guy like Cespedes, who I presume still commands somewhere around 18-20M per year and I really see no reason why he couldn't get that over 4 to 5 years, shouldn't be impacted by the pick. I am really curious what the real numbers around Cespedes are. If he really isn't getting a LT offer, why not offer a 4 year deal @ 80M with a 2 year opt out. Give him the flexibility that he could go short with the benefit of knowing he has a guaranteed longer term deal. I think the biggest loss to him taking a 1-year deal would be that he can't do any better than last year. He'll be a year older, coming off what is overwhelmingly likely to be a worse season, and throw in the QO on top of that. It wouldn't make sense for him. I agree with the rest.
