QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 11:30 AM) This here kinda sums up my feelings. The whole story of a college kid (not even an NFL player yet) being outed by Deadspin like this is just creepy. Disagree. He brought this on himself even if you believe that he was duped into believing his "girlfriend" was a real person. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 11:22 AM) It seems quite obvious they weren't dating until late 2011. If this is a scam that has been attempted on others, it's possible he could have encountered her before the scam was on him. I would need to look at his statement again, but I thought he left the wording just vague enough that he could have had some amount of in person contact with an impostor despite most of their interactions occurring online. Notre Dame's AD said the relationship was exclusively an online relationship. -

So what is the best case scenario for Teo here? That he was duped into believing this online persona was real but lied and embellished the story about meeting her and how in love he was with her etc, and then playing up his dead girlfriend for sympathy and attention even though he had never met her? I mean even if someone was to give him the benefit of the doubt that he believed she was real (in which case he is a f***ing moron considering he apparently was in an online relationship with her for 3 years yet never met or video chatted her) it doesn't fix the fact that his entire story is a lie. Edit: Also, the girlfriend you supposedly love is in a car accident and you don't visit her? She is dying of leukemia but you never visit her? Yeah, I'm not buying Teo's story at all. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:42 PM) Swarbrick just explained that there were times she was supposed to go to Hawaii but something always came up and she never made it there. LOFL. Brian Teo: "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there." -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) I'll go higher than him. I'll go straight to Swarbrick and Jenkins because they're sticking their necks out for him and they're the main reason I believe him. Explain the numerous stories about Teo meeting her in person and her flying to Hawaii to be with him. I'll hang up and listen for an answer that will never come. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) All I will say is that you are a bunch of sick f***s, and I'm betting that less than half of you will have the balls to admit you were wrong and apologize when Te'o is proven not to be in on the hoax. Well that would still make him a piece of s*** pathological liar who took advantage of the fact that his "girlfriend" who he had never met "died" for publicity by talking about how he had met her, and having his parents talk about how they met her. -

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jan 16, 2013 -> 08:24 PM) Why would ND even get in on this? There's literally no reason for them too. Nothing good can come from it. That was an atrocious press conference by Swarbrick. Holy hell did he do a terrible job. -

"This was exclusively an online relationship." Well thank you for contradicting Manti and his family's entire story about his girlfriend during the season. Awesome, just awesome. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) Except for 2004 Dolphins, where he was QB/Assistant HC. And 2005-6 when he was OC for NC State and they were 95th in total offense (119 total schools) So that is part of the reason why he went to Canada. He was coming off 2 pretty bad years and did not even have a job in 06-07. Trestman may be the best coach ever, but you are reaching if you say hes never been part of a bad offense. His last 2 jobs in the US were bad offenses. The Arizona offenses he coached were nothing to write home about either. Arizona was middle of the pack on offense in 1998 but then was absolutely terrible on offense the next two years. Scott Mitchell was not appreciably better with Trestman as his QB coach for one year than he was otherwise (and he was nowhere near as good as he was in 1995) and that offense worked only because Barry Sanders was an absolute monster that season. His offenses in San Francisco were really good but that had almost nothing to do with Trestman (look at their stats before and after he coached there). The Raiders were terrible on offense Trestman's last year there but very good the previous two (they were also a top 10 offense the two years before Trestman arrived). Trestman is supposed to be a very good offensive mind and he may be a great hire (I'll keep an open mind) but looking closely at his resume there isn't anything that really jumps out as a great job.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 11:42 AM) That was a rough season. It is actually crazy that that team won 13 games in a shortened season. What an absolutely atrocious roster.

Why do announcers still stupidly insist you should wait to go for a 2 pt conversion when you will definitely need to get one at some point? Houston needs to know as early as possible if they are going to need 2 TDs or a TD and a FG so you can plan accordingly. Waiting doesn't do anything positive for you.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Deja Vu. This is why watching road games is worthless. Sometimes you just dont show up. It is more than that. If Illinois doesn't regain its 3 pt shooting touch they aren't going to be good. Our big men are as bad as you will ever see in the Big 10 (with Egwu being the only Big 10 talent) and while our guards are good at penetrating none of them are good passers. This team needs to make 3s to be good but the problem is that you have a bunch of guys who have never shot the 3 well before that were making 3s early this year but aren't now. Sadly, I think our shooting capabilities from 3 are closer to the current level than the early season hot streak, especially with Griffey reverting back to being a terrible basketball player. -

Also, I'd like to say f*** you to Ron Guenther yet again. Illinois was a borderline elite basketball program that Guenther allowed Weber to run into the ground. Add in that he allowed our football program to be a laughingstock and he had to have been arguably the worst AD in the country over the last 20 years. -

Also, Groce needs to just go to a lineup of Abrams, Richardson, Paul, Bertrand and Egwu and then only sub when guys get in foul trouble. I wouldn't play anyone else on this roster more than 10 minutes a game. They are all f***ing terrible besides those five. -

QUOTE (Boogua @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 03:08 PM) The question should be "Why do you have one post player, 2 million wing players, and no true point guard?" The 2009 class looks pretty bad now. Paul, Richardson, Bertrand, and Griffey. 4 players and not one true ball handler or post player in the bunch. The 2011 class was similar, except that egwu has the potential to be a good post player. The lack of inside presence and ball handling are killing the Illini in big ten play. A million wing players who can't shoot or pass btw. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) The questions be coming for John Groce. This is the first game this year I felt like the team looked completely unprepared. We have a lot of terrible players though. None of Shaw, Griffey, McClaurin and Henry are even close to being Big 10 players. Richardson sucks and has sucked for 3 years. Weber was a remarkably terrible coach, he completely destroyed Illinois basketball. -

It is clear that the early season 3 pt shooting for Illinois was a fluke, you had a bunch of guys who have never shot the 3 well making 3s. You have 3 awful seniors getting minutes in Richardson, Griffey and McClaurin and sadly the guys who sub for them are just as bad if not worse. Everyone on the planet just got to witness why Shaw doesn't play. He f***ing sucks and has no idea how to play basketball. Henry is completely worthless and a huge disappointment. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) Shaw was a top ten player at one point, finished hs with his RSCI in the 60s. How you can't find minutes at the four with this team is just shocking. Have to assume total bust. I think it is a few things, he rebounds well but has always looked completely lost on defense when he plays (albeit in very limited minutes). He also thinks he is a small forward on offense and jacks threes and jump shots even though he isn't a good shooter. I also tend to think that he is being pushed out the door because he isn't good and the slight upgrade he might provide this year, if any, isn't as valuable as his scholarship is going forward. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) Oh yeah in his own right he's not good. But he's the best option at the four right now. His defense down low for this team is huge, and paired with Egwu you have a competent front line. He's also a better rebounder than our other options, even if poor in his own right. Offensively, whatever. Griffey is giving you nothing anyways. Henry is the best threat there but he isn't a four at all. Really just out of position. I've been calling for more minutes for Langford, but other than that, I want to see more of the Egwu/McLaurin combo if it means less of Griffey and Henry down low. I sound like a broken record, but Griffey really does make everyone he plays with a lot worse than they actually are. McClaurin has been a solid offensive rebounder but he has actually been the worst defensive rebounder on the team this year. It is scary how bad our options are at the PF position. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) You can play McLaurin with Egwu and in fact they have a lot this year. IMO, that's when this team is at it's best. Problem is you lose depth by starting them together. Either way, Griffey playing next to either makes both look worse than they are. McClaurin doesn't rebound and kills the offense when he is in there with Egwu. Playing them together for long stretches does not work. McClaurin plays solid low post defense but doesn't really bring anything else to the table. -

So the one positive from last night for Illinois is that Egwu looked like a legitimate Big 10 center for the second straight game. He is really talented so hopefully the light has gone on for him permanently and this wasn't just a couple of good games. The biggest negative (other than the fact that it is clear at this point that Richardson is just a terrible shooter and not just in a slump) is that we now have the worst production from the PF spot out of anyone in the Big 10. Griffey and Henry are just awful. Henry showed ability last year and I loved him in HS but he still doesn't play very hard and he rushes shots constantly. If I need to pick between the two I choose Henry because he at least doesn't looked scared on the floor and has upside but Groce has very limited options. McClaurin isn't very good and you can't play him with Egwu, Griffey sucks, Henry sucks, you can't really play Bertrand at the 4 for long stretches because then all the wing players are going to play way too many minutes although that may be the route you have to take, maybe you try Langford at the 4 and see how he does.
