Republican Convention Thread.
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) I wasn't a fan of her speech, but I think she became more comfortable as it went on. I do agree with that, for her first time giving a speech on such a large stage she did seem pretty much at ease and that is fairly impressive.

QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 10:03 PM) More like shot, shot, bulls***, stretch of the truth, shot, shot, my darling husband, shot, shot, poor John, shot... That's about it so far. I missed the very beginning, but I've basically heard her take shots at Obama, talk about how terrorists are still threatening the country and then McCain as a POW.

So does this about sum up her speach....fear...war.....shot at Obama...fear....war....shot at Obama? But seriously, I was really hoping to hear more about real issues during this speech and there has been very little of that.

Twins Watch Thread 2008
Ken Griffey III struck out with a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs. I still for the life of me can't understand the love affair with Carlos Gomez.

2008 Chicago Cubs Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 06:09 PM) Something is f***ed up over there. Why did he miss his MRI? Didnt he think that may be a bit important? Saw that cubs fans are now saying they believe in the curse because Harden's shoulder is hurt. Ummm, the guy is always hurt folks They are lucky Harden stayed healthy this long. I'm more surprised when Harden is healthy than when he is hurt.

Sox @ Indians 9-3-08
Huge win today as it puts pressure on the Twins to keep pace against AJ Burnett tonight. Thankfully this team has Jenks because the rest of the bullpen is a disaster right now.

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 11:11 PM) And BTW- how can you think 3rd and 2nd aren't big holes? Going into next year, we might have Getz and Fields at those spots, and that would be brutal. Did you read his post?

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) The 2008 team is very much one dimensional. Its important to have those speedy guys in ur lineup. We only have one guy who has true speed and thats Alexie. Looking at many of the divison leaders in the AL, all of them have guys at the top with speed. Boston has Pedroia, Elsbury. Minny has Gomez, TB has Upton and Crawford, LA has Figgins, not mention many others who can steal at any given moment. Its obvious we need to get fast, need alittle more diversity in the lineup. Im sure KW knows this and im sure KW will figure something out in the offseason. As of now we just have to hope that our boppers keep bopping because thats the only way the 2008 White Sox can win games. Carlos Gomez is currently a freaking terrible baseball player. I cringe when people bring him up as the type of player the Sox need because he he has been one of the worst hitters in the major leagues. He strikes out a ton, doesn't hit for average, and doesn't walk. But you could have him in your lineup if you want speed. I will take a guy who is actually good at baseball. He may be good someday but he is currently the definition of an awful player. Jacoby Ellsbury may steal bases but he isn't great at getting on base and isn't hitting for power either. Those are not the type of players we need. Speed is nice but only if the guy is actually a good baseball player. I would love to have a Pedroia on our team because he hits line drives and is just a really good hitter, that he has speed is a luxury. I would love to add some guys who hit for average and hit line drives. Whether they have speed is far less important.

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:03 PM) That is a good analysis but it only further points the finger on Konerko and Thome. Those guys are both hitting below .250 - it would be naive to call that an anamoly given their ages and apparent decline in skill. They are major contributors to the Sox being so low in hits. More over, they are SLOW and hit into A TON of GIDP. Does that mean we should replace them with hitters that can hit .270 - .280 with 15 - 20 hrs? Maybe a Sean Casey / Carlos Guillen type hitter? Thome has not been a problem. He may not hit for a high average but he does get on base at a .370 clip. Konerko has been an issue because he has sucked this season, not because he is a power hitter. Same with Swisher. For the Sox to score runs on a more consistent basis they will need to upgrade the 1 and 2 hitters. The rest should take care of itself.

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 09:58 PM) I agree regarding Dye and Quentin. Thats why I mentioned building a lineup with the only power hitters being those two guys. The question is how to upgrade the other positions with more versatile batters. It doesn't matter how versatile guys are if they don't get on base. AJ and OC aren't power guys but they don't get on base consistently and that kills the production of the lineup.

So... what are our options?
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 09:41 PM) Whether we win the World Series or miss the playoffs, I think its clear that a lineup that generates ~50% of its runs from HR's isn't the best idea. Clearly we have to play out the rest of 2008 as is. That being said, what do we do for next year? Back in the 90's the Sox generated plenty of runs with just the Big Hurt as its main power hitter. Am I correct in saying that? Does this mean we should build a ball club with Quentin and Dye as our only legitimate power hitters? If so, what does that mean? Get rid of all of these (Griffey, Konerko, Thome) guys? It seems like Getz might be the type of hitter to give us more balance. Would a 2009 IF of Fields, Alexei, Getz and Swisher be sufficient? Again, that leaves us without a legitimate CF that can get on base. We don't really have anybody to trade in the minors, so what do we do? I'm guessing there isnt any young studs that are coming up for free agency, so maybe a Dave Roberts type player for a year or two? I am just thinking out loud, but am I being captain obvious by saying that there is NO WAY that the White Sox go into 2009 so heavily tilted toward the all or none HR style that gets extinguished against the Dice-K's and Cliff Lee's of MLB? Well for one thing, it would help if we had guys in the 1 and 2 spots who didn't suck at getting on base. This team does rely too much on the HR at times. However, if we had guys in the 1 and 2 spots getting on base for CQ and Dye this lineup wouldn't go through funks near as often. The 3 power bats in the middle of the lineup haven't been the problem. Having guys in the 1 and 2 spots who don't get on base and then having PK and Swisher each sucking for the majority of the year has been the issue. If Konerko and Swisher had hit like they were capable of we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Sox vs Carmines
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 30, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) How did AJP pop into a double play? If it was on a bunt attempt, I might as well stop watching tonight. Cabrera was on the move and AJ hit a ridiculously weak pop up to the pitcher.

Game 2! Sox vs. O's WCIU Start time after tiebreaker
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 08:40 PM) If you said "Jim Thome is not clutch late in games" I'd actually agree with you. When you say "Jim Thome is not a clutch hitter" I greatly disagree. He really is pretty bad late in games, that I can not defend but he tends to come through big in the first 6 innnings. There's just something about Jim Thome (probably all the K's late in games) where people tend to forget all the times he comes up big in close games while a guy like Joe Crede who's "clutch" stats aren't all that impressive is considered one of the best clutch hitters in the game. (it seems like every time Joe Crede comes through with a big hit it's memorable, which leads me to believe that he's more "memorable" clutch than he is "consistently" clutch but that's a theory for another time) So really it's all about the wording. I really don't have stats to back this up and I am not going to look for them, but I think one of the reasons that Thome struggles so much late in games is that he is probably faces a lot of left handed specialists and he struggles to hit lefties to begin with.

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread
QUOTE (JuiceCruz16 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) I just saw a list of the unofficial top nfl times, and Ted Ginn is the top at 4.06. another guy Wright I think at 4.09 Bo Jackon 4.12 with Dante Stallworth 4.13. The most jaw droping though was Deion Sanders 4.45 backwards. There were also some claims of Willie Gault posting a 4.05 and a 3.98. Honestly I would guarantee all those times are crap. All hand timed and thus much better times than they actually were.

QUOTE (JuiceCruz16 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 01:08 PM) Not a chance he would be in the 4.0. He easily would be sub 4.0. 3.75 max. Other guys have run sub 4.0 and Bolt is the best ever trained for just that type of thing. He would be closer to your superhuman 3.5 then your 4.1 prediction. Who has ever ran sub 4.0? Nobody has ever come remotely close to that at the combine.
