QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:50 PM) By what you just said, what if McCarthy wins 20 games and Denks never makes the big leagues. Turn a negatives into positives. And yes I know McCarthy can start because he's start for this team. If we were going to trade McCarthy, this wasn't the right time to do it. McCarthy has not started for an entire season for the Sox. Assuming that the tolls of the 162 game season as a starter wouldn't possibly hurt him (a DL stint), who's to say that he'd suddenly turn all that untapped potential you see into his supposed ace material? You question that the other starters are going to be able to carry the ball (despite having proven over entire seasons that they can) yet with no sample size from which you can cite, you demand for us to take the leap in over a chasm of logic to believe that just imputting McCarthy into the rotation is automatically going to mean that he'll have it all put together. And this is just as feasible as the situations you thought up -- what if McCarthy puts up an ERA the wrong side of 5 for the entire season? He got traded while he still had an upside and we got a lot for him. Although I really thought the Cardinals would have bitten at the McCarthy for Pujols straight up deal.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:43 PM) It's a step back because you know Count is good for a DL stint or 2. Is MB going to rebound? Will Vaz every find his stuff back from his Montreal days? Will Garland even be on this team? Too many questions marks when you had a guy ready to step into the rotation with not much of a drop off. Can I get a look in your crystal ball that you're certain that Contreras will be on the DL twice during the season? It's amazing that you question if MB (a proven starter with 1-2 ability) will get it back but think that McCarthy is going to come into his own with zero to little growing pains as a starter for an entire season. That is such a chasm in logic, I can't even see the other shore from where you made that jump.

QUOTE(Wanne @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:42 PM) I'd like to go back and see how many people said this about Thornton too. I guess I'm one of the few that's not upset with this trade at all...because personally...just wasn't sold on McCarthy being a consistant pitcher at this level. Obviously KW isn't just going to toss a couple starters away for nothing...give it a chance. Arms added: Sisco, Aardsma, Gio, Danks, Masset, Floyd Arms lost: Freddy, Cotts, McCarthy Arms to be counted on: MB: contract year...will come back strong IMO Garland: most consistant pitcher the past two seasons Count: Very consistant past few years Javy: Pitched very well at the end of last year Come off the ledge people...we're in good shape next year....and KW's seeing to it that we'll be well off for the future as well. He's not s***cannin' '07. Get out of here with that logic and reason! You must not have gotten your invitation to McCarthy's Cy Young ceremony from now until his retirement and you're just bitter about that. That's gotta be it.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:33 PM) If not then KW just started that trend now... Suuuuure. But hey gang, how's that Olivo HOF ceremony going to be? I'm thinking of attending. Do you think it'll be crowded?

QUOTE(Dan @ Dec 23, 2006 -> 03:30 PM) WORST. TRADE. EVER. Um, Lou Brock and Ernie Broglio would like to speak to you. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/baseball/w...dlinedeals.html
-
Reading this thread is really reminding me of some previous threads regarding trades. And on that note, how goes Cooperstown's efforts to get Olivo's bust bronzed for his impending HOF ceremony? I swear -- for many people on this board -- if KW walked on water, you'd complain about him not swimming. We've still got a few months before spring training, let alone the start of the season. A trade or some FA work may still be possible. It's also amazing that McCarthy who has shown flashes of being very good but hasn't been able to put it together is automatically, again in many peoples' responses here, going to overtake Johan Santana in 2007 for the AL Cy Young. Take off the homer blinders and look at this pragmatically please. Just like the Garcia trade to Philly. People thought we didn't get enough for him. Yet everybody here was joking about how bad Garcia was all last year (my favorite being Kalapse's Flamethrower Freddy with the 86 mph speed gun saying "Intimidation had a New Name") I'm personally amazed that we got something more than a sack of scuffed balls for him. Never mind. Forget I said anything. Continue with the complaints that the sky is falling and the end of the world is at hand. Never mind that all the prospect trading over the past seasons might just mean that we may need to restock a little bit. I'm not defending KW, I'm just pleading for a little reason here rather than emotional "OMG!!!11! WE'RE GONNA BE WORSE THAN DA ROYELS THIS YEAR!" knee-jerk responses.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 21, 2006 -> 08:35 AM) Actors get hurt too... Are you trying to tell me Rocky Balboa was real? I was just making the point that wrestling isn't fake. The results are predetermined. There is a significant difference. However, a lot of people think wrestling is so much more low brow and for the uneducated because of that fact yet do not realize that their favorite TV shows, movies and books all have the same thing (the results are predetermined) It doesn't make the acting, lyrics, words etc. and the emotions people feel while being engaged in it any less fake. -

SS, that is so true not just for Tank but especially if he was a member of the Bengals. -
Never underestimate some parents. I had an experience where I was threatened by a parent that wanted to take me to the school board because I supposedly got her kid kicked off the football team because of his behavior. He got in my face, ripped up my detention and then told me off. His coach asked for behavior reports from the teachers and told the parents that at orientation. So, I wrote him. She got completely bent out of shape about it saying I had no right to do that, despite being told by the coach that he wanted this information from all teachers. Later on, we all find out that the reason he was suspended was because he was skipping practices -- but telling his family he was going. After getting that info, I sent it to the parents. They told me that that I was lying and that it was all a cover up and that my "friends" (i.e. the coaches that I'VE NEVER MET) were covering for me. So, this story really does not surprise me about the beliefs of some parents.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/20/law...oran/index.html "The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Quran. "I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped." ... Not more Muslims! Oh golly gee whiz! What ever is this MELTING POT supposed to do. Give me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...as long as they don't pray to a different invisible man than Rep. Goode. Muslim: It's the new Irish. And here's an idea for the guy. Don't want to swear in on a Quran? Then I suggest you don't do it but don't b**** and stop those that do because that is part of their religion. It doesn't harm him at all that Ellison swears in on a different book. The Earth's axis won't stop spinning and the sun will continue to shine. God, I hate this stupid f***ing pseudo-outrage from fundamentalists of all religions.

Just got done watching the Straight Shooting Series with Terry Funk and Shane Douglas. It was very informative and entertaining. They talk a lot about ECW and how it eventually became a parody of itself with Douglas talking about how "I talked to Paul about there being six interviews. It doesn't matter how good it is, people won't want it after seeing five others. The same goes for tables. After seeing six, seven, eight tables, nobody wants to see a ninth, tenth table." It was a really good discussion of how oversaturation of one element led to the product possibly failing. They played up Heyman's creativity but criticized him for not really being a good "boss" to control things like that. They also made a point about wrestling being like Thanksgiving dinner in that you want a little of everything and not a plate full of one food and nothing else. Really informative shoot. Also, Samoa Joe is missing Final Battle this year with a severe MCL sprain. He is off the knee til the January TNA PPV. AJP/Torborg vs Eckstein/Hoyt is being discussed for a future TNA PPV. I did laugh at Lashley's lack of mic skills and his Freudian slip calling it "WWECW". And ROHWrestling.com is having a 15% off sale. -

QUOTE(NUKE @ Dec 20, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) This issue has a lot more to do with just McKinney and I only bring it up as an example. My overall question is why is it alright for blacks to make racist remarks and not whites? Recall that when the Seinfeld guy ( I forgot his name already ) made his famous rant against blacks it was preceeded by those 2 poor victims of his racist bile calling him a cracker and insulting him? How do people like Al Sharpton get away with calling Jewish people "evil interlopers" and still be revered by many as a crusader for civil rights? ( I cant keep a straight face when trying to put that name in the same sentence as anything positive ) Why is it alright to refer to white people as crackers and honkeys but if white people use racial slurs against blacks they are the personification of evil? Right, and that's why I was one was on the few people who said that what Michael Richards did was not news back when it happened. Tis funny though to see all those "OMFG, he said n*****!" people that were outraged really not getting upset here too. Hypocrites. But that said, McKinney and all this is still not news. -

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Dec 20, 2006 -> 07:48 AM) Kinda like David Duke, who seems to always pop up in the news even though he should be thrust off into obscurity, eh? Uh, outside of his trip to Iran with the Holocaust deniers, I haven't seen or heard much of him in the news. A simple Google search of the news shows that the only other (outside of the story that he was going to Iran) was a David Duke story from 2004. He was on CNN being interviewed as a part of that story of his trip to Iran. I do believe he was interviewed in Tehran too if I remember correctly. Should he be in obscurity? Yes. So should McKinney? Yes. Is a lazy media going to pick up on a non-issue because it has something to do with race and shove it down our throats until we can't stand it (a la the non issue of Michael Richards and his usage of a word) because it creates a cheap buzz, gets people talking -- outraged that it is even being covered and otherwise -- ? Absolutely. It's a non-issue for both Duke and McKinney. Who cares what their outgoing views are? They're not in any frame of power any more and are just getting used to create fake wedge issues when there are plenty of real ones. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 10:21 PM) Interesting, if the former President Bush was challenged to a debate by Cindy Sheehan, would he be chicken for not responding? GMAB people. The lack of respect for Presidents is appalling. I don't think any of you would have been saying this if Reagan turned down a challenge from someone. And say what you will about Carter, but he has lived a very noble life. I believe he has walked the talk for many decades. Could you imagine Reagan building homes for poor people? Traveling the world to monitor elections. I am far prouder of Carter than anyone that followed him. But but but, he's a liberal so it's funnier to go after him!

QUOTE(NUKE @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 02:40 PM) Now you're comparing this scumbag DA to the U.S. Governments detention of terrorists huh? Thats a rediculous statement even for you. Need I remind you that it is leftists like you that are preventing these terrorists from having a day in court with your frivolus legal challenges. Actually it is representatives from the CIA and the US government who have said that some of their extralegal maneuvers to extract information (read: torture) means that they cannot bring many of these people up for a trial or they'll have their system exposed because what they did to them was extralegal. And yes, I am comparing the two. Hiding of evidence, going after people who are innocent while the public buys into the media campaign. Its the same thing. Pardon my skepticism and love of the idea of "innocent until proven guilty" in all cases.
-
You mean the government's assurances that they were going after the guilty party(ies) were not just enough to assuage everyone's possible skepticism in this case? To many people here at ST.com Overzealous DA wanting fame and attention to get elected going overboard with accusations = bad US government wanting fame and attention to get elected going overboard with accusations = good foreign policy See -- hiding evidence, lying government officials...And yet people get all hot and bothered when somebody dares to question indefinite detentions where over 80% of them are eventually freed because there is no evidence to prosecute. Simply put -- Wrong is wrong no matter who does it or says it.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 02:01 PM) Apparently, Carter agrees with you. True true. I just have a severe dislike for Dershowitz. He throws out accusations of bigotry and anti-Semitism during debates more happily than a chimp in a beat off contest. Most notibly, he said that Norman Finkelstein was anti-Semitic and did not understand the plight of those who survived the Holocaust -- except both Finkelstein's parents were Holocaust survivors. Dersh was just pissed because Finkelstein's study in "The Holocaust Industry: Exploitations of Jewish Suffering" showed how the Holocaust was being cheapened by the vein of academics such as Dersh who threw it out there all the time when the seriousness was not there. He also showed mathematically that due to the severity of the Holocaust and the populations of Jews in the world at the time, that many of the new claims of survivors trying to get money from Swiss banks etc. were likely to be false. Finkelstein thought that that sort of crap shat all over the memory of the Holocaust and was actually defending the banks from being defrauded. He felt that if people exploit the Holocaust for their own personal gain, it actually cheapens and destroys the true brutal inhumanity that was suffered there and that he saw when his parents told him about their experiences.
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 17, 2006 -> 01:42 PM) You'd think if Carter really believed what he said, that he'd be all gung ho for the debate. If your opponent 'knows nothing' then you embarrass him in public debate. Academically, there were more than a few questions about the academic integrity of Dershowitz's "The Case for Israel" in his usage of sources, not citing them etc. He was cleared by Harvard but there's a lot of other colleges who believe that he was still less than academically honest. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rj-eskow/der...s-_b_26296.html http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=10891 http://dir.salon.com/story/books/feature/2...witz/index.html

QUOTE(The Critic @ Dec 16, 2006 -> 06:39 PM) Jim Cornette is fantastic. He's being wasted as TNA's "general manager" or whatever he is. They should pay QVC to take Don West back and place Cornette in that chair permanently, since managers are a dying breed. It was SO nice to have Angle take out West last week on iMPACT! so Cornette could get some mic time. There are a bunch of Cornette shoot videos on YouTube. He's always been one of my favorites. And that tape you're talking about is hilarious - Cornette + hunger + anger = comedy gold! Remember when the E let Cornette have his "opinion" videos in the mid/late 90's with such gems as "Hulk Hogan, you're a household term. But so is garbage and that stinks when it gets old too." QUOTE(YASNY @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) The level off terrorist ass-kissing on here, at our own peril, is incomprehensible. I remember being skeptical of the US government and their assurances even though data, research and human rights groups have debunked a lot of their assurances. But I don't remember doing that. C'mon YAS. You're better than that sort of vitriol. And before you ask, I was trying my best to be respectful in my long post in this thread. I just had the images of Abu Ghraib in my head too when you were talking about inhumanity. And with this Americans vs 'terrorists', what about the idea of: Wrong is wrong. No matter who does it or says it.
