March 3, 20179 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 02:20 PM) Any update on if Rodon threw his bullpen? Daryl Van SchouwenVerified account @CST_soxvan 2m2 minutes ago More Renteria acknowledged possibility of Rodon not being ready by first week of season. Supposed to throw first bullpen today.
March 3, 20179 yr Dan HayesVerified account @CSNHayes 20s20 seconds ago More #WhiteSox said all along that Carlos Rodon is fine. Taking "measured" approach w/ him to help w/ bigger expected workload. 1st side today.
March 3, 20179 yr I don't get it. A "measured approach" to reduce his workload = him missing the beginning of the season? But he's healthy?
March 3, 20179 yr Author Bruce Levine @MLBBruceLevine 36s37 seconds ago Rick Renteria on Carlos Rodon . Hopefully we will be able to put him out there with no concern. ( on regular season opening week rotation)

March 3, 20179 yr He is either fine or there is concern. What the hell is it? It has to be concern for something.

March 3, 20179 yr Connor McKnightVerified account @C1McKnight 55s56 seconds ago More Coop: If everything goes right from this moment to the end of spring [Rodon] will pitch in the first 5 or 6 games. Connor McKnightVerified account @C1McKnight 41s42 seconds ago More LT: To clarify, Coop's saying Rodon can make his first start in the rotation. WTF is there so much contradiction out there right now?
March 3, 20179 yr Dan HayesVerified account @CSNHayes Don Cooper said if all goes right Carlos Rodon would make start in first 5 or 6 reg season games. Also said Rodon dealt w/ arm stuff in '16.
March 3, 20179 yr Good news is that if he was seriously hurt or they were overly concerned, he would be shut down right now
March 3, 20179 yr QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 05:06 PM) now they claim he didn't throw hard because of a stomach ache. This keeps getting weirder.
March 3, 20179 yr QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 06:12 PM) This keeps getting weirder. No it doesn't. All was said is that he was slightly under the weather with a stomach thing, but they wanted to keep him on schedule so they had him throw today as originally planned.
March 3, 20179 yr Maybe he came in out of shape and so this slow approach is to avoid an injury due to being out of shape. But the result of the slow process may preclude him from being stretched out enough to make the start.

All was said is that he was slightly under the weather with a stomach thing, but they wanted to keep him on schedule so they had him throw today as originally planned. Read page 4 of this thread. It's not just that, it's the news that he may miss the beginning of the season. Since that came out, a new tidbit about his health has come out every half hour. Edited March 3, 20179 yr by Jose Abreu

March 4, 20179 yr QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 06:21 PM) The arm issues he supposedly had last year that hadn't been mentioned until today are definitely concerning. Hoping for the best... It's possible they don't want to abuse Rodon in a season where we aren't going to compete. Asking him to throw over 200 innings would be a mistake. We need to make sure to keep him heathy and trust the training staff
March 4, 20179 yr Help me understand something: Rodon's been pretty mediocre so far in his career; where some see promise in his Sept/Oct results last year, I see a "garbage time hero." He's been a bit of a China Doll so far in his career, with injuries in every season sidelining him, and now whatever this latest issue may be... He's represented by Greed Incarnate, who will never ever agree to a contract extension here. Why is Rodon considered to be a part of this team's core again? Thanks in advance. Not every top prospect comes up like Chris Sale and instantly dominates. Rodon has improved and improved, and had a very strong finish to the season last year. He has ace potential.
March 4, 20179 yr QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 3, 2017 -> 08:54 PM) You're kidding...right? Not at all. I was a big fan when he was drafted. (Big-time slider, high draft position, etc...) However, look @ what he actually is as a player. He's been injured every year. He struggled with control for much of the year, although he did look good in garbage time last year. He's been good for 2.0 & 2.7 fWAR, the latter of which was exactly the same as Gonzalez provided in 30 fewer IP. But all that aside, there is no way in God's Green Earth that he'll re-sign here with Boras as his agent. So why should we as a fandom look at an oft-injured, mediocre-performing, Boras client as a core player? If he improves, he's gone. If he stays the same as he is now, he's a middling player. (2.7 fWAR ain't great)

Rodon has improved and improved, and had a very strong finish to the season last year. He has ace potential. 2.0 fWAR in 2015 to 2.7 fWAR in 2016 isn't really a quantum leap. And he's hurt. Again. Set aside his draft position, & consider what he is, not what we hope him to be. He was, by one metric, equal to Miguel Gonzalez last year, even with him padding his stats in garbage time late last year. And his agent is dying for him to sign elsewhere. Why is he a core player? He may not be good, & even if he will be, he probably won't be a part of the next good Sox team.

He may not be good, & even if he will be, he probably won't be a part of the next good Sox team. He made significant improvements last season with his BB% and change-up effectiveness. Fangraphs has poor pitch framing costing Rodon 14 runs last season, which isn't baked into his fWAR, ERA, etc. He's already established that his baseline is a mid-rotation SP, and he clearly has the potential to be much better than that. It's unlikely that he'll ever become Chris Sale, but someone that projects as a ~3+WAR pitcher would earn close to 20M per year on the FA market. Guys like that don't exactly grow on trees.
