About six hours until the deadline. Merkin hints Putnam, Petricka, and Alburquerque as non-tender possibilities. Not sure if that’s based on knowledge given to him, but maybe.

Yeah. Farquhar seems like he would be included in the group of "possible non-tendered candidates" for sure if it was just a guessing game.

You sure like complaining about odd things. $1M for a guy like Farquhar to fill a spot in a rebuilding team’s depleted bullpen is normal course of business. We need someone to pitch innings and you’re not going to get anything much better for the price. It may be a boring move, but I don’t see how it warrants complaints.

Agreed, we need bodies out there to eat innings during the rebuild. Farquhar is a serviceable middle reliever for 2018.

It is really a $200k deposit on an arm. They could still release him later on and pay him only 20% of that.

I think the guy is a stiff. No future. Rather give some kids a shot since they are still rebuilding next year. Some of them may prove useful when the team is actually good.

What kids? Have you seen our AAA depth chart? It’s not exactly overflowing major league ready bullpen talent.

I agree but we ran through a lot of young pitchers last year from AAA and no one really stood out to me that can't be obviously penciled into the bullpen. We might have some more arms to look at by late '18 early '19.

Well, you don’t want to rush young kids that aren’t ready up to the big leagues...even in low-pressure bullpen situations.

 

Besides, the odds are someone like Fulmer or Lopez ends up there eventually. Nothing to get upset about. It would be more upsetting if they kept investing resources into Putnam and Petricka with limited payout even if they performed above expectations.

You forgot Vieira, but the point remains the same. And I didn’t realize Jones could be ready by spring training, thought he was going to be out longer. Glad to see I was wrong on that one.

Yeah they could bring them back on minor league deals.

Yeah they can sign minor league deals. There was even an article about Putnam where he commented about not knowing if he would be tendered and if he isn't if he would be back with the White Sox to do rehab.

Putnam is out until somewhere around the All-Star break at least. I predicted months ago he would be gone.

This is common practice with fringe guys. Don't take up a roster spot because they can't pitch, but keep them in the organization to bring back to the MLB at a later date.
