January 21, 20197 yr Reds better get an extension, because otherwise this deal would blow just as hard as all their other deals this off-season.
January 21, 20197 yr I k ow that it is in the spirit of providing them in that they get additional value they can use, but I’m still quite annoyed at the thought of a team trading a competitive balance pick to the freakin Yankees.

MLBpipeline has the 2B prospect the Reds gave up in the Puig trade as the 6th best in all of the minors. Fangraphs has Long as 50 FV guy. That’s a decent pair of prospects to give up for a team that’s still not very good. Gray better be agreeing to a semi-friendly extension.

Otherwise, 4 yrs/$37.5M. Seems like a pretty team friendly deal to me. I like this for the Reds.

January 21, 20197 yr I think Long is a margial talent going forward. But the Yankees were never going to recoup what they gave up for Gray. I don't hate this trade for both teams.
January 21, 20197 yr Interesting that the yankees flipped long who is a 50 for stowers who is a 40 albeit with upside. Issue is that long is rule 5 eligible so he has to be protected and both the Yankees and reds have no room for that. So the reds really needed so sell him if they didn't want to lose him unless they carry him on the roster. Seattle has enough room to carry him.
January 21, 20197 yr Gray could headline a rotation in far better shape than the one that finished 2018 with a 5.02 ERA: Gray, Roark, Wood, Luis Castilloand Anthony DeSclafani, with Tyler Mahle, Sal Romano and Cody Reed also capable of starting. While the Reds have yet to sign a major league free agent this winter, the additions through trade have pushed their payroll above $120 million, which would be a franchise high. Following a 67-95 season, the Reds felt close enough to start moving toward contention, even with a loaded National League Central that includes three potential playoff teams in Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis as well as a Pittsburgh team that finished above .500 last season. source:espn.com

January 22, 20197 yr The fact that the Reds are committing extensive resources to jump start their rebuild in the face of 4 teams that on paper are better (and definitely at least 3) puts more pressure on teams like the White Sox and Padres to step up their efforts...or end up in limbo like the Blue Jays (at least they have two future stars on the way), Pirates and Mariners.
