A supposedley top 5 farm system should have no room for players like Alcides Escobar.

This dude is just AAA filler...I don’t think it’s anything more than that.

Just because you've heard of him doesn't make it a good backup plan.

The term "good" and "Alcides Escobar" really don't go together. He's 32, provides no upside and posted a -0.7 WAR last season. If this organization wasn't in shambles, you would hope there would be a player in AAA that could at least be called up to the big league club and not hurt the team like Escobar did last year.

Thank you. Alcides Escobar is almost indescribably bad. He was never that good to begin with, but he has aged horribly.

Of course he isn't good. Good players don't sign minor league deals without an invite to big league camp.

However, there is some value to have a veteran as an emergency option. More so for a contending team, but whatever.

Won't somebody please think of the Mendick!?

I totally think as long as injury does not occur in april that mendick will get the call.

Not when the veteran literally has negative value. The Ryan Goins and Danny Mendick types are better options IMO

Escobar fits the Sox profile. Not sure why we need him. What to do with the 4A guys who have a good spring. If you are basing your roster off of spring players that is not good.

We discussed the roster, in another thread. If they go with just 12 pitchers, the 13 position player are:

Moncada, Jay, Abreu, Alonso, Palka, Anderson, Sanchez, Castillo, McCann, Engel, Jimenez, Garcia and ???

The thirteenth spot would go to Rondon, or Guyer. My choice would be Rondon.

In any case, Escobar is not going to be on the 25 man roster.

I can't wait for the real games to start.  People are arguing the merits of Alcides Escobar signing a minor league deal.  Who cares??

He's a favor to Charlotte who can say they have big leaguers on their team.

I just learned that the Sox have released Guyer. Therefore, I would assume that Rondon gets the 25TH roster spot.

The Sox have very few IF in the upper minors.  Mendick is really it.  I doubt Laz Rivera starts in AAA.

Padres have Chris Stewart on their AAA team.  He's 37 years old and has a negative career WAR in the MLB.  Are they no longer a top 5 system?

Escobar is godawful.  That said, he may be better than Goins?

Sox really good at collecting garbage players.

Is this the real SS the Sox FO was targeting this offseason? What do RH and KW do all day long?

Braves have Ryan LaMarre on their AAA team.  He's so bad, he couldn't even stay in the horrible Sox organization.  I am throwing them out of the top 5 of farm systems too.

Jason Coats is an outfielder for the Durham Bulls.

This is just plain stupid.  Most organizations have a few veterans and/or AAAA types on their AAA rosters. I’m honestly shocked this signing has somehow warranted two pages.

Awful organization.  Tampa is run by a bunch of idiots.  OUT OF TOP FIVE!

And Mendick didn't exactly light up Birmingham.

I'm pretty pleased with his AA year. He kept up a good OBP and in a park that is terrible for him he nearly slugged .400. If you think of Mendick as similar to Saladino, he's on a very similar trajectory. 11 of Mendicks 14 home runs was as an away player last year.

Some of these comments are hilariously over blown.  It's a minor league deal that won't start a service time clock on anybody young if we have injurues.  Yikes

Good back up plan I think. You need good players at the AAA level to call up if needed to fill in

A rebuilding team needs young players to call up.

Some of these names are pretty dog-eared but you have to keep the reserve squad stashed some where.
