What's this guys ceiling? A MLB comparison? ETA? Seems like he's more of a proven fielder than hitter (Sounds like Cleuluis Rondon)

Just read an article that says his ceiling is a 8-10 HR guy that can play 2B, 3B, and SS...seems like a utility on a good team, odd to be coveted like this

International bonus money is capped and that is kind of why a lot of people are mad. This guy just popped up this year (no one knew he was going to be available), and the Sox are willing to give him $2.5mm which means they still have that amount unallocated even though they have had two years in the penalty box to line up deals with better guys for this coming J2 period. So basically being rumored to be offering this guy $2.5mm means that we have only spent $2.5mm on other prospects even though most of the agreements have already taken place. This seems to line up with the fact that we aren't connected to any of the prospects on the top international amateur lists from any of the different sources.

Yep. It means we didn't go for quality or quantity despite having 2 years to focus only on this class.

Hard to get excited about a guy who's ceiling is thought to be as a utility player. Sounds like the Sox are 'on the cheap' once again. This is becoming a bit too frequent now.

Isn't cheap but has a ceiling of a utility guy...don't get it

I don't think people understand the ceiling/floor argument. If he's an 8-10 HR guy with elite defense at SS, his ceiling is higher than utility guy.

Well, he would at least need a decent AVG and OBP to go along with it.

Yeah - the comp being thrown around was Jose Iglesias as a ceiling. That's an All-Star.

Also, this would not be the Sox being cheap.

So this guy popped up out of no where and the sox all of a sudden have money......With their success in the Cuban market is it possible there's already been talks behind closed doors and thats why the sox haven't been linked to others?

We should consider signing a couple of his friends and family.

Yeah, let’s pass on that strategy this time.  As has been proven, players choose money as the number one priority.

They don't need to be behind closed doors. He is eligible to sign at any time but the Orioles are basically the only team with any cap left so it sounds like he is waiting until the next period for more teams.

In this case it could have actually worked out for us. He is friends with the Mesa brothers.

I believe I read that he has to wait until July 2nd if he wants more teams to have money available.

No, he was ruled eligible a couple months ago.

Yep, edited my response.

Cuban deal is a no-go due to our trade embargo and unohoo.

I don’t believe he is affected by this.

He is already cleared.
