The Phillies bottom of the 1st is the perfect example of what Saber geeks overlook.  Harper's given an intentional walk to load the bases, to setup exactly what the White Sox want. A double play grounder out of the next hitter. So this means the Phillies don't score. Harper's OBP goes up for doing nothing more then taking an intentional walk. Now before any saber geek says, "it wasn't Harper's fault that happened," it has to be said, who cares. The object of this game, boys and girls, is to score runs. Not just to get on base. Getting on base of course can lead to runs, but getting on base and not scoring runs is worthless. Which shows the flaw in how stats are looked at today, which is situational hitting, which is important to score runs, is now overlooked as important.  Because truthfully, if Harper had been pitched to, and he hit say a routine grounder to second which scored a run, that would have been a more productive at bat then taking that walk. Now, it certainly wasn't his fault he was intentionally walked, but he shouldn't get credit for anything either. But he does because it improved his OBP. Now before any Saber geek comes on here and lambasts me for saying anything against precious sabermetrics, I'll use this analogy. Sabermetrics are like the light bulb. Very important, useful, and maybe we wouldn't know what to do without it. But the purpose of the light bulb isn't meant to be shined right in someone's face full blast. Translation. Use it correctly and understand there's a time and a correct way to use  them. Sorry for the long rant, but I feel this needed to be said

Right.... but you are complaining about OBP, the most basic non batting average stat available, and are upset it does not provide situational info? That is not the time or correct way to use OBP.

Take a look at WPA (Win Probability Added) if you want situational sabermetrics.

Can someone please help me understand how a guy batting 254 with 18 Homers and 72 RBI's is worth 300 million. Not trying to be a jag but is it not better to spread that money amongst 3-4 guys who are good players???

Oh, I agree. Completely actually. But for people so in love with OBP, it is a fact that Harper improved his OBP with that intentional walk. So when the box score is looked at at the end of this game, it will show that. I agree it's not the correct way to use it. I'm not so much complaining it doesn't provide situational info, as saying it can be very misleading.

Nova has been much better for the last month or so. He's been good enough that the Sox should consider bringing him back for a long man to cover innings with a staff comprised of young power arms in their first full MLB season and coming off of TJS.

He's been better, but he's (supposedly) a GB pitcher that has homerun problems. He is 32, and all of his peripherals have gotten worse every year for 3 straight years. I think we can find someone who is a better fit at the cell.

EDIT: Or the GRate or w/e

At least they have Anderson and Jimenez higher up in the lineup...nobody else matters, other than McCann (maybe).

I think that the batting order is pretty good, actually.  Anderson 2nd, Jimenez 4th, and McCann 5th,  even though he is struggling big-time lately.  He is still better than the guys batting 6-9.

This might be the only lineup in the last 3 months that Renteria has put together without a .180 hitter in it(usually batting cleanup).

Seems like the type in recent years we bring back and they don’t even make it out of May before being DFA

That is a better way to put it. Trouble is, this isn't the stat that most people see when looking at the league statistics.

Thanks for the response bro. You lose.

LOL why does any baseball fan at all want pitchers to bat and run?

Wow quick hook from Ricky! Managing with some urgency!

TA defense so bad, has not improved at all.

Gotta love Ricky micromanaging this inning!

That was an extremely lackadaisical turn for such an important moment. Yolmer was too slow causing Tim to rush and throw it away. No excuse for either, that play has to be made

yes, huge backslide defensively this season.

Harper stealing 3rd there.. Ricky would never allow that.

Harper steals 3rd with 2 outs.......building stats or does it mean something

Not like a wild pitch would be unexpected from Cordero...that pitch didn’t hit the Kingery, Harper would have scored.

Hell, he just threw one. Luckily Kingery got in the way of it though

Just saw that posted by DVS also.  This team is just so far away from being competent in any aspect of the game.

Bingo. Little things like that create runs. It's one of my biggest gripes with Renteria.
