Tons of players currently on contracts that are already ugly for teams, and will last for several more years (Miggy and Pujols come to mind). I don't know if teams will be wise enough to stay away, but 35 year old Bumgarner is not going to be worth $29 million. The FA market is terrifying for this reason.
October 31, 20196 yr If those prices are anywhere near correct -- and I think that they could be -- I could see the Sox focusing almost exclusively on the bats and trying to sign both JDM and Grandal (and maybe Puig too), and picking up one of the lesser starting pitchers on a 1 year deal. I have my doubts that they would be willing to give any starting pitcher a contract over $100 mil.
