Medeiros & Guerrero Clear Waivers; Outrighted to AAA

Tayron Guerrero and Kodi Medeiros have cleared waivers and we're outrighted to Triple A Charlotte

— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) January 10, 2020

Already posted by @Sleepy Harold in the Encarnacion thread, but probably worth its own thread.  Two interesting arms that both could appear in Chicago in 2020 are retained in the organization.  Good news.

Noice!

Yeah you always have to be excited about guys who make minimum and no other team wants to give a 40 man roster spot. These guys suck.  If they are White Sox, things went awry.

Medeiros is hanging on simply due to his handedness and draft position.  Dude walks the world.

The Sox waived Juan Minaya last year and he was probably better than Tayron Guerrero ever will be.  They are both 29 years old.

Lol, says the guy who also complains about Covey getting opportunities.  Having depth is important.  I wouldn't have a batted an eye if Medeiros or Guerrero were claimed, but its definitely nice to have them around.  Between those two and Burr and Frare, there are some interesting pen arms, 3/4 with MLB experience and the other a former 1st rounder, who the Sox could have lost all for nothing.  Instead they are all sitting in AAA as insurance.  Its certainly not huge news, but its a nice development for the org whether you agree or not.

Every team will use 10-15 pitchers that won’t be on the opening day roster, most of whom suck. These could be two of those guys...hopefully not bad if they get the opportunity.

What did I say about Covey ?  Although he sucks too. Those arms aren't interesting. Arms like them are necessary due to injury, but they are easily acquired. And the teams that eventually use the fewest of them usually win.

There still are 5 or 6 guys on the 40 man that could easily be replaced with a minor league signing, and the team wouldn't be worse off.

Just going to agree to disagree.  Having depth in the org isn't a bad thing, and definitely not worth scoffing about.

The Charlotte and Birmingham rosters are going to be full anyway. "Depth" was always going to be there.  No other team wanted these clowns for "depth",

I'd rather have depth like Guerrero, Medeiros, Frare and Burr than minor league journeymen or guys that have no shot of ever appearing in the big leagues.  These guys are 26 years old and under, with the exception of Gurrerro who is a little older but also throws over 100 MPH.  3/4 have MLB experience.  Chances are none of them end up being difference makers in the big leagues, but - like I said - it is nice to have them around if only purely as depth that isn't on the 40 man.

Your argument that "those roster spots would be filled anyway" is a comically bad way to look at it.

Covey is becoming coyote ugli by now. He will kite off in the spring winds I expect. New faces are welcome.

A lot of guys with major league experience who would do as well as these dopes are still available for minor league deals. Mederios repeated AA and sucked. Frare got lit up. Burr is hurt. Guerrero, the Marlins didn't want. If any of these guys has to pitch an meaningful inning for the White Sox, a lot has gone wrong.  This isn't a team playing for experience and a draft pick anymore.

The point being, who cares if they were claimed or not? The likes of them are available for nothing. It probably is a little less work for the FO not having to chase others, but it's not like they are much better off. If it wasn't these guys, it would have been someone else you would find just as "interesting".

Juan Minaya

Still kinda like that guy. Filthy stuff if he ever could throw strikes #sadface

Good news.  Guys like this aren’t ideal for a 40 man roster spot, but are nice depth for a AAA roster.  Plenty of teams would like these guys as AAA depth if they that was an option.

@Dick Allen strange hill to die on.  Sure these guys are replacement level but they are young enough to where an improvement or breakthrough still might happen.  It's a bad time of year for teams to try and make claims most 40 mans are fairly full, so it's not like "nobody wanted them".  Nobody wanted to give up a 40 man spot, which now the Sox don't have to either!

Genius.

So is Guerrero who we cut to clear a spot for Ciscek?  Because didn't that happen before Ciscek?

Guerrero was dropped for Robert.

Zavala will probably be dropped once Cishek is official.
