They just punted the rest of the draft.

Depends on how much they save with Crochet.

Everytime you post a guy you like Dirty... they immediately get picked afterwards.

Aww.

Tink goes to Cardinals

Kills me how the Cardinals gets a competitive balance pick.

Even if both come to about 6.3M total we are pretty much already there.  I bet we take a legit prospect 3rd overall.  Maybe a RP.  I was looking at Christian Chamberlain, something like that.

Ding ding ding. Harold and I on the same page. Sox just spent all their money on two pitchers. Risky for sure - high upside, big downside.

Did that massive 7'3" 275 lb linebacker from HS get drafted yet? The one that people were posting videos of from Pornhub yesterday.

Complete joke; with you there. They have benefited big time from it too.

So someone break it down for me. One area I'm not great with.

What would the Sox need to do to get both these guys signed? What is Kelly in theory asking for, and what is slot for that pick? If they were to sign him, what does that mean for picks 3-4-5?

Crochet has a slot of $4.5 million.  If he takes say a million dollar haircut, they can pay Kelley $2.5.  If Crochet signs for $3 million they can also push about $3 million to Kelley.  Both of those figures are without the extra 5% they can go over without penalty, which amounts to about $385k extra.

So a scenario like Crochet signing for $3.5 means they could move the other million over to Kelley, plus the other almost $400k they can go over without penalty would put Kelley right at $3 million.

the cards draft is sooo good

I bet we get a legit player in the 3rd as well and 4th and 5th get punted. I bet we have 1.5 million left (assuming out limit was 7.5ish)

Yeah, I think the Sox draft is pretty much over in regards to super high upside young talent.

Totally worth it.

They will be north of 6.3. They are north of 7. 6.3 would be well below what they can demand and are looking for.

Obviously they couldn't compete without this.

So the draft is over for the Sox though, right? These two will take up pretty much all of their pool in regards to signing anyone else of real sneaky talent. Doesn't mean they can't find someone seniors and etc.

Great draft, but sometimes I do prefer quantity - especially with the risk of SP's. That said, these two guys have great builds and upsides and could be exciting. Role the dice enough and things will come up how you hope.

If we saved a decent amount on Crochet, no.  Not even close.

Not hating; I said I usually prefer quantity, but I'll take these two. Still think it's really risky though and would rather have Ed + Kelley. Two arms is just a risk for me, and one high school righty.

There's no reason the Sox should have saved a lot with Crochet.

Knowing they already have deals in place with both picks, I’m not so sure they’re punting the last three picks.

how?  I don't think there was any rumblings of him going much higher while there was legit rumblings of him falling.

The Cards getting Fletcher in, I believe, the Comp round last year is a travesty. I think Fletcher is going to be a star. He was a late blooming northeast kid. incredible athlete.

As a college Jr with his lack of a history in this draft, I bet they did.

I am going to say 3 good slot level college players, or at least for rounds 3-4.
