When (if at all) is Bummer eligible to return?

Ugh, sucks about Bummer. You can see the strain losing our best guy has impacted our bullpen. This is why it always amazes me when people say Chapman wasn't important to the Cubs world series season. Remove your elite, #1 relief pitcher and your bullpen will feel it. 

 

45 day IL is retroactive correct?  Bummer went on the 10 day IL on Aug 8th.  If yes he’d be eligible to return around Sept 23.

Alex McRae?! We now know the extent of our pitching depth.  It ended at Flores.  Hmm, I have a strong suspicion that Stiever is not 100% back from whatever was going on in March.

Also does not bode well for the development of Tyler Johnson, Ruiz, or Hamilton.

Fry sucks but he could conceivably eat innings.  

It’s clear Bummer wouldn’t be ready in the next 2 weeks and they need a roster spot, hence moving to the 45 day IL.

Yikes did I wake up in 2018? People wanted to keep all of our prospects (even the bad ones). I hope they still feel that way after seeing we were one injury away from Alex McRae

Stiever is fine. Putting him on the 40-man and burning an option is an issue though. He's not Rule 5 eligible until December of 2021 and he'll be starting in the minors next year. If they brought up Stiever to pitch out of the bullpen, he'd be in AA next year but on the 40-man prematurely. This stuff matters. Mcrae was with the team on the taxi squad which is why he is the choice. 

FWIW: Alex Mcrae is with the team on the traveling taxi squad. That's why he's the addition. They weren't going to fly a different guy to KC for 2 games when MCrae was already there.
