I'd be reluctantly ok with 14 IF and ONLY IF there were massive incentives to being a top team (division winner). Like Ghost wins + home field. I'd rather lockout than a straight-up 14 team playoffs. Fuck that mess. Ghost wins?

I know we think these guys have cushy jobs (and they do relatively) but they are workers none the less and have legit concerns here about the direction MLB is headed both for them and the fans. OK, let's not get carried away here. Neither the owners or the players truly give a fuck about the fans. If I'm on the player's side, I'd welcome the added playoff bonuses. Especially giving more players who make the minimum an added check or two from postseason and more important marketing opportunities in the grand stage.

Essentially, a higher-seeded team in the 'wild card' round would start the series up 1-0 in like a best of 5 and would have home field all games. So they'd just need to win 2, while opposing team would need to win 3. From what I understand - other sports leagues internationally successfully do it. Edited March 1, 20224 yr by iWiN4PreP

That seems pretty wacky and I’d rather they just have a bye to a later series. No matter what 14 teams is gross.
March 1, 20224 yr 12 team playoff. $725k min salary. $50M bonus pool. $230M CBT increasing $2.5M a year. Get it done.

Seems like those extra two teams drive a lot more revenue. 14 does seem like a lot depending on how it is done…maybe more byes for better teams and than very quick mini series for back end teams that make it / or heavy ghost wins.
March 1, 20224 yr Shoot after Covid I don’t even remember how many teams make the playoffs (that is sad). Precovid it was 5 right? 3 division winners with a playoff between the 2 wild card teams? So this is a proposal from 10 all the way up to 14. Pretty big increase. I actually like 12 - very curious how the 14 team format would work. Critical under both scenarios for real benefits to go to better teams but 14 with 162 is too many games. I much prefer 140 or even 120 and 14 teams. But hey what do I care - more than anything I just want baseball.

A Wild Card best of 3 like 2020 would be welcome. Just whittle 14 down as soon as possible if they are dead set on 14.

Jumping to 14 feels drastic. I could live with 12 depending on the format. Hell, do multiple do or die Wild Card games to whittle down a winner and roll into the Division series. More teams in, Division winners get a few extra days rest, problem solved.

But I do agree with players - division winners need a strong differentiation. And there is the aspect of that is another few starts a World Series team has to make over course of long season.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown of how much revenue teams derive from April, if you strip away Opening Day...which would obviously still occur in late April or early May regardless. I wouldn't mind 154 or even 140-144 games per season but anything lower than that feels like too big of a change, perhaps starting seasons between April 15th-20th and also delaying the beginning of Spring Training to provide a longer off-season break.
